1. If you spot anything SX or a Yamaha BB414, give them a try. If you're lucky you might spot a Danelectro, which I can't praise enough. Even better, try hold on a few weeks to add on another £80 to pick up any Squier Vintage Modified. Head into a guitar shop and try out a few different shapes to make sure that you don't end up with something you don't like again. Once you know what you're after then you should definitely keep an eye on the Marketplace here! I know new and shiny is great, but getting a brilliant deal is even better
2. The headstock of my Danelectro '63, I love this shape! (I think you can click for a bigger version, complete with dust )
3. Avenged Sevenfold, twice. Both times they came across as lazy, selfish and arrogant. The first was at Leeds Met, and the frontman made a point of repeatedly saying they were tired, before cutting the gig short. They must have played half an hour of a 1 hour set, basically because they were hungover. The 2nd time was at a festival, where the frontman once again kept pointing out how he had a bad cold. They did about 2 songs, got a random girl from the crowd to sing two songs for him, then they called it a day. I remember hearing booing, but maybe that was just my mates! Talented guys, but they don't give a sh*t. Not an ounce of life or character between them (Some good records though).
4. Looks fantastic! I love how you left the body looking pretty worn - it looks rugged without looking cheap or nasty!
5. I have to admit it took me a while to realise what GAS stood for too (though I understood the context). I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt the need to ask
6. Congrats, that's ace! I get nervous playing with anyone looking at me (ie trying a bass out in a guitar shop) so I think it's awesome that you got up there! You've come away with some stuff to learn, so you'll be a better player next time you're up!
7.
Can I ask what sort of music (other than GnR tributes) you guys are using Chorus on? Any examples?
Since I got mine I've been playing a lot of stuff by The Cure. It sounds so much better now I'm using chorus! Not sure if Simon Gallup actually uses chorus, but it sounds brilliant on A Forest and Fascination Street!
8. Hello! Always good to see another member from West Yorkshire!
9. I haven't played with any others yet, but picked up an Electro-Harmonix Small Clone last night, and it's beautiful. I was up late into the night with my headphones on, listening to all the lovely shimmery, spacey tones that I've always wanted to get out of my bass!
10. I very nearly bought a Corona Chorus, they seem absolutely amazing and I've seen a lot of praise for them. There's someone selling one here on Basschat, that's where I was going to buy from! Instead I now have a Electro-Harmonix Small Clone and it's brilliant. Very simple, just a dial for rate and a two-way switch for depth but I love it. Really great sounds, seems very flexible! Light, shimmery chorus right through to deep, spacey wobble. Have a gander at some gear reviews on YouTube!
11. Tell us what happened!! Did you buy? We need to see it!
12. Thanks so much for your responses, you were right on the money with the volume pots! The amp has been stored in my spare room over the years but has gathered a fair bit of dust. Some knob-swiveling sorted things right out, and it works great! I'll keep an eye on the dust, as I didn't realise it could get into the pots and wreak havoc. Thanks again!
13. Oh man I was looking all over for a Retromatic a few months back, I've heard great things about them. I've just picked up a new bass but hope whoever gets hold of this loves it!
14. This is stunning, such a beautiful end result! A friend of mine has a Variax and I could never get on with the styling, but yours now looks incredible! I love that binding!
15. Hi all, forgive me if this kind of thing has been asked but I've not found any solutions - possibly searching for the wrong phrases! I dug out my old practice amp yesterday, but straight away the static and popping was overwhelming. The merest touch of the volume pot causes very loud popping and there is a constant loud crackle. I've uploaded a video to YouTube to try and demonstrate, but it seems very quiet in the video. Please excuse the terrible quality, I was trying to do it while keeping the dog at bay! https://youtu.be/H8XCSHcjOIs I've tried a few input cables and several power cables. I know the bass works as I used it last weekend. The amp is a Laney Hardcore Max (HCM30B) and hasn't been plugged in or turned on in around 3 years. The problem also happens when nothing is plugged in. I'm not using any pedals, just bass to amp. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
16. Now sold, thanks for the PMs!
17. Hello there! I'm definitely in the same boat as you - played basic (bass-ic) stuff since I was about 16, with no consideration for technique. Now I've just turned 32 and I'm more interested in learning to be a better player than I ever have been! By the way, I love that Thunderbird! I'm a huge Motley Crue fan and have wanted to give one a blast for a few years!
18.
Having got a bass up for sale in the marketplace I think C is a biggie. Can't believe how quickly you disappear from the front page, and with the 36 hour bumping rule you really see how much else is available when you trawl through to find your own post!
I was surprised by this! I put an ad up on Sunday afternoon, by tea time it was way down the second page. I typed most of it out again, thinking it hadn't actually posted, before thinking to check past the first page. That's the downside of such an active markeplace on this site!
19. Wednesday morning bump! I also forgot to mention that this was recently re-strung with D'Addario strings, though I'm sure any potential buyer would rather stick their own on!
20.
So my first (and only) Jazz is the one below, I bought it new in 2005 from the Academy of Sound (RIP) in Leeds
Always good to see another Leeds resident! Was Academy of Sound on the business park that got levelled for the new structure that's currently going up? Just off Whitehall Road / Wellington Street? If so that was a great place! I love this thread already, it's really making me want to pull the trigger and finally buy a Jazz while I'm on my week off...
21. Haha this is cool! Always good to find other Minecraft fans too!
22. I've been considering it for a while, but have finally decided to sell off some of my small collection, including my gorgeous aqua Dano '63. Sad times! I love this bass and the incredible tone, but I need to make some space now that I've moved and have always wanted a Fender Jazz. Two birds with one stone, etc. I've had this baby since 2009 and she's in pretty good condition cosmetically. There is a bit of belt-rash on the back and the vintage-style tape has come away slightly at the back in the cutaways (you can buy this stuff by the roll) both of which I've tried to show in the pictures. There's also a very small nick in the paint, about 1mm x 5mm, on the bottom-left corner when looking from the front. Otherwise no other damage or scratches or dings and the neck is smooth. All the electrics are still as standard and working 100%, the volume/tone pots are tight, and I'm sure everyone is aware of the great tone from the vintage-style single coil lipstick pick-ups! I'm still surprised by the weight even after 6 years of ownership, as the body is semi-hollow, with a pressed-wood front and back over a strong plywood frame. I'm the only owner this bass has ever had, and I've not seen any of these since I bought her. I'm not even sure if they still make them. Maybe one day I'll buy one back, but for now I'm letting go. Looking for about £150-ish. Based in Leeds and happy for anyone to come and try it out or collect. I'll arrange postage if needed, but at the buyers expense. I'll even give her a polish! 23. Thanks all!
