1. Yes, indeedy. A golden age for bass players. OTOH, RIP Shergold, H&H, Acoustic and other deceased 70's brands.
2. Sorry if this seems a bit of an egg-sucker, but was the amp re-biased when the new valves went in? But as Kiwi says, maybe it just needs a service...
3. My 2p - may not just be to do with 'space to vibrate'. * Raising the action on a Fender bridge will effectively increase the break angle over the saddle. This definitely has an effect on tone - e.g. if you experiment with changing the height of a gibbo stop tailpiece while leaving the bridge at the same height it makes a pronounced difference. * When you jacked the action up, did you leave the p'ups at the same height as before - thus increasing the distance between p'up and string? I've found that moving p'ups away from the string can add a bit of 'sparkle'.
4. It's an interesting theory, but without any hard stats it's going to be difficult to draw a definitive conclusion. As someone who 'get's by' on a P and a J using picks and fingers, I can positively state that the idea of a custom bass just doesn't appeal to me. Maybe I never saw one I liked enough to buy.
5. Hi James - welcome Hope you enjoy it here - plenty of good stuff in the 'Marketplace' forum and usually better value than evil-bay!
6.
I just fitted 2 Schaller strap locks to both my Laklands last night. The screw that came out of the body was fatter than the one that Schaller provide. So I had to re-use the Lakland screws. However, the Laklnad screw is too big to go through the Schaller fittings so I spent the next 2 hours filing by hand 4 Lakland screws and the hole where the head goes through and the screw goes through on the Schaller fittings. My hands today are now dead :)
Or you could just have rammed a cocktail-stick in the hole. With the 396 leftovers, you could have had an entertaining 'cheese and pineapple on a cocktail-stick' soiree. Sophisticated party nibble - amaze your friends and baffle your enemies
7.
are boutique models worth the hefty price tag?
If you buy a boutique bass and you like it, then presumably it's worth it. Er...that's it. For me, the word 'boutique' conjours up images of plump 'ladies of a certain age' buying spangly evening wear from a dinky little shop somewhere in leafy Cheshire. May I recommend the term 'Tailored' be substituted. So much more manly.
8.
I'm thinking of putting this whole question to Geneneral Discussion, as no-one seems to be interested here..
It would probably get a better level of response. This sub-forum is sort of about (1) how to fix your amp or bass (2) stuff like 'what sort of capacitor should I use for a treble-bleed'. You might also wish to try 'Recording' - quite good for this sort of question
9. As a non-jazzer (and non-soloist), I've read this thread with considerable interest. It's like a whole different planet. In my little world of pub blues, the idea of everyone else stopping for a bass solo would have the audience (and me) rushing for the doors. But it sounds like fun. Fair play to you guys! Vive la difference.
10. "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law". As for me - 1 P, 1 sorta-J and a Franken-P on loan to a mate. So hardly living the dream eh?
11. I'd leave it red, gold and green. Very Jah Love. To paraphrase Marcus Garvey - Red for the blood that was shed. Gold for the wealth that they stole. Green for the homeland, Mother Africa.
12.
How long have you got? Some of the people who don't approve frequent this forum
? ?
13.
.. Schallers come a very close second, just be wary that you need to use threadlock on the nut to secure it 100% as depending on strap thickness, there's not alot of turns left, and that the screws that Schaller use are ever so slightly thinner and shorter than Fender's at the very least.
+1 Even though I use Schallers, I readily concede this point. Def need to get the old spanner out to ensure full-whack tightness. And every Schaller screw should come with a cocktail stick to shove in the hole. So much for Teutonic Thoroughness.
14. There's no shame in using car paint. Fender used Dupont automotive spray for their custom colours throughout the fifties and beyond. But car nitro can craze if the guitar's exposed to a very sudden shift in temperature. Which is why some 'relicers' shove a nitro'd body into the freezer for a few hours, then whip it out and stick it in front of the fire.
15. Nasty cab; depending on mfr / type the speaker itself may be worth salvaging. But probably not.
16. Strap locks - I like Schallers, but other BC-ers may differ... http://www.schaller-guitarparts.de - see 'security locks'
17.
you might be suprised at how much difference it makes to your ears, but how little difference it makes to your hands!
+100% - it's like taking a blanket off your rig. A worthy post, Sir.
18.
It's probably way out of my league , but no harm in asking. Anyone found anywhere that sells a range of Crafter Basses?
http://www.gitarinn.is/bassar_crafter-cruiser.htm It's an Icelandic shop. No 5, but the 4 string centaur is a crippling 64,900 Icelandic Krone. Or, currency converted, a rather more cost-effective £307!! Crafter and their better known, even less expensive sister brand, Cruiser, are relatively inexpensive instruments, so should be within your reach.
19. ...a 7 string baritone? The work of The Devil. I've decided - I want a Bass V re-issue. Even though they haven't done one yet... (waits for other shoe to drop).
20. For dancing /listening - not playing.... Junior Walker & The All-Stars - Roadrunner Isaac Hayes - Shaft
21.
All I want to say is there's a place in the world for widdly bass playing and that's all I want to say.
22.
I think having "active" and "passive" inputs can be slightly confusing. It really should just be like on my bass amp which has "high gain" (That would be "passive" on yours) and "low gain" inputs. Y'know, i don't think people should have to be spoonfed everything, i think we have a right to choose what sort of input is sutiable for our bass!
Indeed. BC Says No to input Fascism!
23. Played slung round yer neck like a normal bass. Maybe the guy's confusing it with this...the Ampeg Bass Baby from 1961 - 62, IIRC
24. As a 'meat and two veg' root note plodder, I sincerely admire advanced technical skills and the hard work that went into developing them, without actually wanting to do it myself. But I'm happy that some people like listening to bass gymnastics. While recognising that the opportunities to demonstrate such accomplishments are limited in those forms of music targeting the mass market, I see a useful trickle-down effect. There is, IMO, currently a greater scope for the Bass-Zilla approach within certain genres of music, which, whether by coincidence or not, tend to enjoy a more selective appeal. So I plod, others shred and everybody's happy.
