1. Smallest rig was the Ampeg BA115: It was actually a suffitient backline for a medium sized outdoor venue.
2. Thanks guys I knew right off the bat, that I should avoid it, but thought that maybe you guys would know beter I'll stick to saving for the 2x10" Cheers, Fek.
3. Hey, I stumbled upon this http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm49/li...as/DSC00541.jpg a few minutes ago. It's a homemade 1x12" cab with a switchable tweeter. 150w @ 8ohms. I wanted to ask you if I should take it. It's in my area, costs 75eu. I was thinking of a 2x10" or 1x15", but I'm now thinking about this 1x12" Cheers, Fek.
4. Is your bass active - battery could be dying. I used to get that depending on the bass output level with many amps. Try a different amp. If it continues, the problem is not in the ashdown, but in the EQ/pickup circuitry in the bass, usually the "tone/bright/trebble" knob is usually the one, that causes the noise. Also faulty cables can also cause this kind of problems. Make sure to check every piece of gear. Cheers, Fek.
5. I love D'addario's. Have nickel roundwounds atm. I want to change to ProSteels somewhere around christmas (Usually a set lasts me 9 months). I usually go with 50-135. No finger torture what so ever. Maybe you're just not ajusted to the high tension of the strings.
6. Well. 5-stringer here. Untill recently I was playing the stock Yamaha 45-125 (I think the E was at 100) medium stock strings for 9 months or so. Mainly due to the B being too loose (can't hold any tuning below B properly) and the tone being dull as F***, I decided to change them up. Ordered Warwick Black Label strings. The B strings core snapped not even with one full twist around the tuning peg and ended up going to a local store to buy new strings. Bought D'addario's Nickel Roundwounds 50-135 (E at 105). Incredible bright tone was noticable even with the eq at flat. Altho I don't usually do it, I decided to try some slaps - perfecto. Tone was wicked - lots of high end, clear note definition, noticible lows and basically everything you can want from a bass tone. Might wanna try out the ProSteels, just to get more of that "cling" sound, that makes my playing cut through through any guitar sound in the recording mix.
7. I, IMHO, would never really go S/H unless the item is really cheap and or is a rarity, that I can't get usually (IE, Spector basses are nowhere to be found in Lithuania). Refering to Machines's list, I can easily say that the MAG will deliver. Never dissapointed me, toneshaping is quite versitile, has enough punch in it's arsenal, and all in all, it looks quite nice. I've hear that GK Backline's are good amps also. That was really my second choice instead of the MAG. The Peavey head... Dunno really. To me, Peavy refers to the 1990's Swedish death metal scene (A Boss HM-2 thru a 60w Peavey amp's miced from behind were the basis of the sound). At least I can tell, that their guitar stuff is really good. Can't really comment on warwicks, since the only time I've had experience with them was the black label stringset (The B string core snapped not even properly wound) and their straplocks (Really good ones). Good luck getting back on the low end, Cheers, Fek.
8.
Hi, I want to buy a bass amplifier. One man suggested to buy Laney RB3 but i think about Ashdown Five Fifteen. Which one is better? Why?
Hey, Aren't you the guy on ferrum.lt who asked this? Just checkin'. Cheers, Fek
9. Subharmonics really make my tone a lot better. I usually go with BASS and 340K at 11 o'clock and MIDDLE, 1.6K and TREBBLE at 1 o'clock, the bass eq's tone on full, compressor at 9 o'clock and subharmonics at 3 o'clock, and it sounds fantastic! Enough lows, definition with the notes and overall nice feel
10. Hey, I tried doing the guitar thru the MAG amp yesterday. I used my buddies MAG 2x10" Combo (Eq flat, compresor at 9 o'clock, sub-harmonics at half way), Guyatone MM-X METAL MONSTER tube drive and a Jackson Performer series V (Old one, ~10 years old, also has Seymour Duncan pickups) tuned to A-E-A-D-F#-B and B-E-A-D-F#-B. The tone was WICKED. Better than any solid-state combo I've ever heard. The tone has so much low end and crunch. Just love it. I played some Nile(Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten, Black Seeds Of Vengeance to be percise) and got a real good tone. I'm definetley going to use my MAG for that Cheers, Fek.
11. MAG 300H + 4x10" owner here No trouble with it at all, usually have to keep it at 33% output, due to PA being sucky. In my personal experiences, this amp can sound heavenly (Can keep definition, brightnes and clarity even tuned to G#-C#-F#-B-E) in one setting and like a 50-year old rust-bucket tractor in another. I have to spend at least 30minutes to get my tone in shape, if my eq was fiddled with even the slightest, otherwise it can sound worse than my Hiwatt 10w combo(Maybe too harsh of an comparison, but still - quite bad).
12. Hey guys, I've been thinking a lot about starting to play an electric guitar recently - really hard to write melodic death metal when you only have a bass in your hand. I recently came about an intresting offer -> http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_fv430bk.htm . Price is good enough for me (When I'll have cash, I'll get EMG 81+85's in there), have enough cash now, and know where to get a good priced second hand pedal. But here comes the tricky part - no $$ for an amp. I really love the Peavy VYPYR 75watt and Line6 Spider III 75 watt combos w/ 1x12, but since I'm saving up for a car, I can only buy myself a guitar, or indulge in a bass upgrading orgy (Respray, EMG's). I have a Ashdown MAG300 + 4x10" that's been serving me well for months and I'm thinking of using it for the guitar (With the drive pedal in the FX loop). My question is not about tone or something, but if I won't drasticly affect the amp in a bad way. I thought of using it, because I like to play a lot of stuff with drive effects and it sounds REALLY good doing it. So guys, please help me make up my mind Cheers, Fek.
13. Hey! After messing with the ashdown eq (added more mids + trebble) I started noticing, that my bass (yamaha rbx-375 was giving LOTS of feedback/static buzz @ 50% of output power (Input at 3 o'clock). I tried to see what the problem was. Sources deducted from posibilities: *Efect loop - disconected, still lots of buzz *Cables - switched them up - same deal *EQ setting - switched back to flat, nothing *Amp - tried it with my headphones via Zoom B2 - *buzzzzzzzz* *Clothes have a static charge from moving - sorry, left my Adidas athletic wear in the dumpster. *Cell phone, rings, belt buckle, genital piercings, PC, other gadgets - none present - amp/bass in a seperate empty room, where no possible interfierance can be found So that leaves me with my bass being the problem. I guess It's either my humbuckers (passive), or the active 2-way eq. I tried turning down the "tone/brightnes" knob half way, I noticed something. The buzz is gone. But I noticed also, that when I touched the knob when it was full way up, the buzz stoped. That means, that when that knob is earthed via my body, the buzz stops. I know the issue has to do with the potentiometer giving off some current, therefore cousing the buzz, whenever it tries to ground itself. What should I do? Cheers, Fek.
14. kennyrodg, I know for sure, that 2x 4x10's would fit better than a 1x15'er Anyway, Bill Fitzmaurice and Stevie - thanks for the theory in LF's, that made it a lot clearer for me Hope I make up my mind either to stick with my original intent of the 1x15", or go with a 2x10" like Bill mentioned earlier. I don't really care the slightest about increasing low end, I just need portability for situations, when the 4x10" is just too inpractical for use Cheers, Fek.
15. Hey! Thanks guys for the tips! I was tinking on putting wheels when I bought it first, but after thinking of going full stack, I decided to wait. I've seen many peope, who are happy with ashdown's 10's + 15's, great tone IMO. The only reason, I would want to mix speaker brands, is if specific features on diferent cabs would give any specific boost to my tone/playability (I'm not in search of some more low end or a new sound, but It wouldn't hurt ). And the 15"-er is an adition just because I need something a bit more portable than a 4x10" if I wont be able to practice in my house. I know some would recommend buying another combo, but I want the same sound to be portable and not cost me more months of saving cash. If I don't recieve some ground breaking pros and cons, on choosing the cab, I will go with Ashdown most likely. Cheers, Fek
