1.
Sounds to me like there's an interesting story behind that if you're up for sharing in terms of getting you out of a rut, if you're up for sharing.
I think it's a pretty common story. I'd reached a plateau in my progress, I just found myself playing the same old stuff and I was getting frustrated with my lack of progress. Learning to slap opened up a different, more percussive mind set which actually crossed over in to all the other areas of my playing and refired my enthusiasm for the instrument.
  2. Love a bit of slap. Learning how to play it really helped me get out of the rut I was in at the time as well.
  3.
I had a fretted one, I expect this will go up in price nearer the cut! It was substantially made and weighs just under around 10.5 pounds. Not sure it has a metal sub-frame mind?
I think I probably confused it withe Godin Acousticaster which apparently has internal metal tines. http://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/godin-acousticaster-40th-anniversary-koa-597549
  4.
I tried one at Bassgear a few years back and found it surprisingly heavy, considering it is a thinline electro-acoustic.
I seem to remember a magazine review from the 90s that said that they had some sort of metal lattice inside the body to improve resonance, that might account for the weight? Although I might have dreamt that.
  5. Just downloaded a couple of albums cheers, that's my evening listening sorted.
  6.
If you go to the Hare & Hounds, it's on Kings Heath high street, so plenty of pubs and restaurants to choose from. Alternatively if you go to the Custard Factory, you have to go to the Digbeth Dining Club, which is a great night out (http://digbethdiningclub.com).
I quite regularly go to gigs at the Institute in Digbeth and I wasn't aware of the Digbeth dining club. I'll definitely be having a look at that the next time I'm there on the weekend, so cheers for the heads up.
  7.
Thanks, Cato. Any particular model of Sennheiser headphones that you would recommend?
I use HD201s, but I think they've been discontinued and I'm not sure what the replacement model is. Edit. Just checked and Amazon are still selling the 201s, although the HD206s for £24 might be a better deal.
  8. Difficult to go wrong with the the B1on and a 20 quid pair of senheisser headphones.
  9. Currently I have three four strings. I'm hopefully adding a 4 string fretless in December or January. At some vague point in the future I'll almost certainly get a 6 string bass, but that may require some saving up.
  10. There's this catchily named Ibanez. https://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_gsr200bf_wnf.htm?sid=175f613757b09444cc2bbde90156599a There's also the Sire v7 at around the £400-£500 mark, prices vary quite a bit depending on which one of the mind boggling selection of finishes you fancy. https://www.thomann.de/gb/search_dir.html?bf=&sw=V7+fretless
  11.
I was thinking the other day how cool it'd be if you were actually Louis Cato. You've shattered the illusion
Disappointing people is my superpower.
  12. Depending on who's doing what I tend to gravitate to build diaries. It's the Basschat eqivalent of 'slow TV'. Despite having no practical skills of my own it's incredibly satisfying watching master craftsmen start with a few bits of wood then, over a period of weeks or months, turn out an incredible instrument.

My natural VM70s Natural Jazz has similar mods and comes in at bob on 9lbs.
  14. Following on from the recent Hi Beams deal, Amazon have just alerted me to these. https://www.amazon.co.uk/DR-Strings-FB-45-Fat-Beams-Medium/dp/B009P6D4TO/ref=pd_lutyp_simh_1_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B009P6D4TO&pd_rd_r=44BZCTDH1GA66ZTTTTNX&pd_rd_w=YjPdg&pd_rd_wg=sBcuu&psc=1&refRID=44BZCTDH1GA66ZTTTTNX £17ish delivered Buyer beware, I can't guarantee that they are genuine, although the hi beams were. I'm going to give them a punt.
  15. To me Jaco's best stuff was his work with Joni Mitchell. This being a case in point. http://youtu.be/OGkAOURhLdw Although I'm also very fond of this, with it's more conventional groove. http://youtu.be/PE6HmArln_k
  16.
What is double thumbing????! Cheers!
http://youtu.be/5Q-XdZWgZzM If you've just started don't worry about double thumbing. It's one of the trickiest techniques to master and comes with it's own little world of pain.
  17. Kenny Young and the Eggplants. It's not something I'd normally listen to but it makes me smile. http://youtu.be/lwV1ktzKB2I
  18. I named myself after my cat who is named after a late Roman Republic senator. It was a spur of the moment thing, I needed something I could remember. I didn't think I'd end up being such a frequent visitor to this site. I never use my real name on the internet, it makes it that much harder for the angry mob to track me down.
  19.
Wow! This is an interesting read. Personally after listening to them i thought the Beatles were overrated. Admittedly i was only a little boy when John Lennon was shot so missed all the hype and their rise in popularity but i've listened to some of their songs and they never really did anything for me.
Better hope Blue's not reading this thread. I know what you mean though, I think it's an age thing. I'm only 42 so to me Beatlemania is just a few black and white clips of a band rendered barely audible by screaming fans. My theory is that the Beatles were so influential that to anyone who wasn't there at the time they just don't sound that innovative. Their sound and song writing structure have been copied so much since that the original material loses much of it's impact with younger generations. I certainly wouldn't describe them as over rated though. They changed the direction of popular music, it just gets harder to hear that the further we move from the event.
  20.
KiOgon
That's the man. Not only are they a quality item, but the solderless connectors he uses mean that a complete idiot can fit them. I speak from experience.
  21.
Here's an interesting challenge - can anyone name a band that all of basschat will agree are NOT overrated? S.P.
I'd suggest Tower of Power and also Snarky Puppy. Even if ypu don't like the music, the level of musicianship is undeniable.
  22. Pretty much every band I've felt strongly enough about to hate I've come around to liking, or at least apreciating, in the end. On the other hand, indifference lasts for ever.
  23.
Are these the real deal? Price seems too good to be true!
If they're not real, I can't tell the difference.
  24.
Just checking, these are standard scale?
Yep, 34"scale.
  25.
I recommend listening to a tune called Weird Part of the Night by Louis Cole, it combines everything that's great about Knower. There's jazz, funk, 80's / Prince, 90s techno and straight up pop music influences in there, all squished up and injected full of weirdness and humour. I'm on a phone so I can't post it but it's a tune.
This one? http://youtu.be/glgPZmSwC4M I think I like it, but I may just be dazzled by the trousers/dance moves combination.
