The following is a true story. I put the details in to an AI (not ChatGPT!) and told it to write the post in the manner of a raconteur. Here's what it came up with: The night was electric, the air thick with the rumble of engines and the scent of beer-soaked revelry. Our band had just wrapped up our set at a biker rally, the kind of gig where leather jackets outnumber smiles, and the headlining act was ready to take the stage. We were tight with them, so we stuck around to watch the chaos unfold. The bassist of the headlining band—a man who lived like his strings, taut and unpredictable—had won a bottle of Jack Daniels in a raffle earlier that evening. With a swagger only a bassist could muster, he brought it on stage. By the second or third song, half the bottle was gone, a feat impressive even by biker rally standards. This was on top of an all-day beer marathon that would have felled lesser mortals. Then came the moment: mid-set, still cradling his bass (thankfully wireless), he wandered off stage. At first, we thought it was some avant-garde performance art. But no—he plopped himself into a front-row seat, clutching that £20 bottle of Jack like it was Excalibur, and promptly passed out cold. Attempts to wake him were futile; he was in a whiskey-induced slumber so deep it might as well have been mythological. The kicker? While he clung to that bottle for dear life, his £2000+ Rickenbacker bass—a gleaming piece of rock history—was left unattended. I had to step in, pick up his instrument, and finish the gig for him while he snored away in blissful ignorance. It was rock 'n' roll distilled into one perfect moment: absurdity, camaraderie, and a touch of chaos. And yes, we made sure he got his bass back—eventually.

The one when the vocalists mother dragged him off stage, drove him straight to a mental health facility and had him sectioned.

Load in at one particular venue was via the back entrance, through the kitchen and down various corridors. Cue many random shouts of "Hello Cleveland!".

You jest, but there is a signature model guitar 😖 https://gettrumpguitars.com/collections/president-donald-j-trump-signature-editions

Exactly! Do you want your bass to sound great, or like a dull thud? 😜

Have you got a link to your band?

Always bad when it's one of our own 😟

Replace strings? Replace. Strings. No, you've lost me there 🤔

Last night Royal Blues @ The Spice of Life, Soho, that London. Decent size stage with backline provided, so nice to be able to hear myself for a change 😆 One of our backing vocalists is away, which makes a difference as we usually have 3 part harmonies going on. But we were told it sounded good FOH. Multi band line up, with the bands having nothing musically in common, but we brought a few people and apparently it was sold out. Didn't get time to take an office pic, it was a line check during changeover then on. There were plenty of pics taken by the punters, I'll post some when I get them. Gear: Ibanez UB804 (EUB) - Swift wireless - Fender Rumble combo (supplied backline) & Korg clip on tuner. Footwear: black leather brothel creepers with white interlace.

Filling out the sound with no rhythm guitar

Like most of us I've been through a few distortion/overdrive/fuzz pedals, but its my Flattley Poison Ivy bass fuzz pedal that works for me. The blend was the reason I bought it. -

Judicious use of Fuzz pedals with blend controls can help to fill the sonic space. -

Happy Jack was selling something similar a while ago. A distortion pedal that can add 4ths and 5ths. -

I'm sure someone will be along soon to correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC the Squier Classic Vibe 50s Precision Bass uses 18% nickel-silver fret wire. It's actually a copper alloy with nickel added for hardness, so unless you're happy with your bass sounding like a dull thud, it will be a long while before you have to worry about rounds causing enough fretwear to worry.

Apologies to Nick for the tardy post, but I bought a bow from him well before Christmas. Cock up on the delivery front not Nick's fault at all, but he was a star throughout. More than happy to recommend. Many thanks, and thanks for all the advice too. One of Basschat's finest 👑

Depends on how easy you find learning Italian.

I'm back and forth on this. First I used the wireless, but as my EUB is on a stand and not moving I thought it a bit pointless so went back to a lead. But then I went back to the wireless because it keeps the stage cable clear. Next, I left the wireless at home because I already take a lead as backup and it's just another item of equipment to take/carry...

Probably uninhabitable conditions due to climate change, economic collapse, technological failures, social unrest, and wars over the last few natural resources. So in terms of the music you've got nothing to worry about! 😀
