1. Classic and Cool Guitars!! That's the one, thanks heaps. Mansons is also on the list, so that was also a good shout. I appreciate the help everyone! They even have a Sandberg VM4... I might be in trouble...
2. Hi team, I know that somewhere in north Cornwall or maybe Devon is a small-ish bass dealer, stocking relatively low numbers of really nice second hand basses, often slightly unusual or special. I've been on the website a while back and always wanted to visit, but now the name totally escapes me, and Google and forum searches aren't helping. Anyone know of where I'm trying to describe? Cheers!
3. I have access to a E300. Useful physical size, powerful enough for practice and small venues, and incredibly clean. No colouration at all as far as I can tell, it just makes your bass louder!! I like the unit, and it's reasonably priced.
4. And I'm really pleased with mine! I think the speaker is clear and well voiced, so much so that I also use it for an electro acoustic guitar. Yeah, the eq is very basic, but it's a tiny unit which fits in my backpack (I have flown with mine!). The headphone jack works well, and the combo is plenty loud enough. I'm a fan.
5. Uuuurgh... Insta-GAS for that Avalanche Run...
6. I have silently followed this from the beginning. Single cuts are really not for me, but the finished result is absolutely mindblowing. I could (and probably will) look at that top for hours. Huge congratulations. What a wonderful thing to have created.
7. I would say a looper as well. I got the cheapest Ditto at Christmas and have had hours of fun with it. Incorporating reverb into the foundation loops fills out the sound nicely. I picked up a cheapy reverb recently, and really enjoy it, certainly enough to invest in a decent one at some point. I agree with the Digitech bass synth wah, it's hilarious. I will probably never use it in a band, but it's super fun. A pitch shifter could also be creative; octave ups, or add in 5ths? I would like to get one of the Zoom multi effects too. They seem like a really good way to test the concept of a range of new effects cheaply, because even cheap pedals eventually add up in cost...
8. Yes, there are a few options, ranging in price. I think you can get stereo splitters (sort of like the ones you might have had as a kid to share headphones on a music player), but the easiest/cheapest option I'm familiar with is an A/B/Y box. ABY boxes have 3 jacks, and can either go 2 instruments to 1 amp (you) or 1 instrument to 2 amps. You have the added bonus of being able to switch between A, B or A+B using the footswitches. I've got a cheap Fender one which is ok but large, but they also do one with a tiny footprint for not much more money. Morley also do a decent one. I would note that these are very primitive and purely act as a signal blender. Theoretically they should work perfectly, and sometimes mine does (!) but occasionally you can experience volume drops or imbalances from one of the inputs; I think it's to do with signal phasing, but don't really know. This where it gets more expensive; something like the Boss LS2 can be used in a similar way, but you have independent volume controls for each input. This could be pretty useful for you actually, as you might value the ease of adjustment for each instrument. They are about £70 new, but often come up on the market place here for cheaper. Might be worth checking out. I'm pleased I bought one.
9. Well, it's been nearly a year, and I still want a P-bass... It has evolved slightly to needing a humbuckery thing in the bridge, but I still really want a P-bass. Oh my dog I want a P-bass. Vintage white with tort or black guard. Maple board, non-painted headstock. Maybe active, as I've never had one before. Is it too much to ask??! The upswing of Maruszczyk popularity (and their infuriating affordability) really hasn't helped...
10.
Cort Artisan basses come with MK1 Bart pre and pups. I had an A6 which was an amazing bass for the money. I'd think the A4 should certainly be worth considering.
I love the A4. A while ago I borrowed one from a friend for a year or so, and was very sad to give it back. Crazy fast neck, nice small and light body, big sound, beautiful looks. I keep my eyes peeled for a well priced one even now...
11. I was borderline neurotic about my first (and, actually, only) expensive bass for about 3 months. Then I dropped it, cracked the lacquer, and totally relaxed!! I still respect it of course, but it was bought to be used and enjoyed; a little accidental damage here and there is not a bad thing in my mind.
12. Please please tell me it's awful and that I should banish all thoughts of purchase immediately and irrevocably...
13. That jazz-uar thing created near-unbearable levels of insta-GAS in me. Think it's not helped to have been listening to Alexisonfire and Brand New a lot recently. I checked out some YouTube videos of it, and it absolutely sings!! Less than a ton brand new too. I'm in trouble...
14. Definitely worth getting in touch with Ashdown and asking for some advice on how to progress with this; their customer service is top notch in my (thankfully) limited experience (MAG 420 user).
15. I started getting in to pedals in 2015, and have about 10 or so now, ranging from dirt cheap Behringers and a Chord through 'standard' Bosses to what I consider upper-end mainstream (Nano POG, Mastotron). I guess I don't have anything boutique. I would note that the cheap pedals can sound ok (my Behringer reverb sounds absolutely fine, and the Chord OD is amazing), and for very little outlay (£30 new? Less second hand?) are a fine way to see if e.g. reverb adds something to your playing. However, neither of my Behringer pedals (reverb and pitchshifter) play well with daisy chains, and need their own line from my power source. They also generate a bit of hum through the system. The pedals from Boss and up are absolutely fine though. No issues; no hum, all work together on daisies... I think as long as the boutique pedals give you what you want, then they are typically worth the money. However, the cheap ones are a great way to start to find out what that might be!
16. Cor, if anyone got the twenty quid PB-50 earlier then they did rather well!!
17. I borrowed and loved a banjo for a week, but haven't picked one up in 3 years maybe. The 5 string open backer (I prefer frailing to finger rolls, based on my limited playing) on Thomann has jumped in and out of my basket more times than I can count. I've used and liked their basses; has anyone tried it and can comment on it's quality? 80 quid seems worth a punt...
18. I refer to my Sandberg as Sandy, and my Martin&Co acoustic as Martin or the Martin. My buddy refers to his Gibson LP as Les. Not really sure if they are names, or just lazy versions of what the guitars are. Maybe both. I have a bunch of other guitar shaped instruments, and none of them have names. Rickenbugger has been my favourite so far! He sounds like a Pratchett character.
19. Les Paul-a-like on the main site, looks rather attractive... http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_sc_custom_lemon_flame_deko.htm
20. 4 string progger for anyone...? https://m.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_b_450_black_progressiv_deko.htm?o=5&ref=mal_a_5&search=1450348730 Erm, and apparently a 75er, that was sold out when I started to type this post...? https://m.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_jb_75_sb_vintage_serie_deko.htm?o=6&ref=mal_a_6&search=1450348839
21. Don't beat yourself up, there wasn't much of a purchase window anyway AT! I was refreshing regularly this morning (both main and mobile), and like I said I reckon it was sub 30 minutes between there not being anything, and them all being sold out! Such a shame, I quite fancy a new Christmas deko...
22. https://m.thomann.de...arch=1449566996 https://m.thomann.de...arch=1449566996 These went up and sold out in the space of about half an hour, between my regular checks... That fretless looks great. Edit: Anyone luck out?
23.
How well do you think that the Jack and Danny basses would play after a full professional fret dress, new professionally cut nut, and full setup? Compared to say a USA Fender?
Speaking from the Harley Benton perspective, I think they would compare favourably. I have played some very unremarkable modern American Fenders, and that was going in with the attitude of "Fender are the best; there is no other bass for me". I mean, they were fine, but just totally middle of the road; considering the price, this was unacceptable for me. I've gone the other way now, having realised that I can't justify spending big bucks on multiple basses. GAS dictates I of course need multiple basses, so I buy cheaply and selectively. I recently bought a Harley Benton 75 jazz, and the quality of the neck finish (particularly the binding) was miles ahead of the Schecter I had played not so long ago. It's so good in fact, that I can't bring myself to defret it, despite buying it for just that purpose. I've also jammed a Harley Benton shorty P through an Ashdown stack with a Les Paul through a Marshall stack, and a Hamer through an Engl valve; sonically it stood up just fine. Are the Harley Benton instruments perfect? No. But you get a hell of a lot of bass for not much money, and little extra spend on top makes them even better. Can't comment on the Yamahas suggested, but I've played several Yamaha 6 strings and have been impressed.
24. I play as often as time allows with a very good acoustic guitarist, who manages melody, rhythm, percussion and singing all at the same time (thinking about it, it's lucky we're friends, otherwise I doubt he'd bother with me!). There is no room for drums in our duo. Two of my favourite bands are bluegrass (Old Crow Medicine show, and Deep Chatham), and neither use a drummer. As has been mentioned above in this thread, they utilise slap double bass and rhythmic acoustic guitar, which to my ears sounds fantastic; again, no room for drums there. I think we are all in agreement that, genre-dependant, a drummer isn't always needed, and sometimes they are vital: is this not true of any instrument though?
25. I got a natural 75er only the other week, so why oh why am I hovering over the black one?? It looks so smart, and the natural one plays so well, so this is an investment, right? Right??
