1. Considering the relative frequency of folks looking for an always-on mild overdrive, I am a bit surprised to have not seen this mentioned yet. A low gain/transparent drive from EQD, with bass and treble knobs rather than a blend, and a drive stage that goes from barely there to surprisingly heavy. I am sorely tempted, but she ain't cheap... Anyone had a punt yet?
2. Very interesting... Noteworthy to me was that the super cheapo Thomann pro snakes (that I have and have been considering replacing for lower volume jacks) come in at the low 47s. Despite not making the top 10, this is about a 1% difference to much more expensive offerings, which to my mind is small enough to be ignorable. I guess I can spend that money on a really clean power supply instead. Hooray...?
3. They have definitely done stuff on the Raster, and I'm pretty sure the Particle too. RP have posted Nick messing about with the new one too... The Tensor I think? The Raster is great - in addition to all the pitch shifting stuff it's a solid digital delay, can do a cool chorus and vibrato ish, and great burbling ring mod/bitcrusher noises. I know the OP doesn't want ring mod, but it does sound cool.
4. I have a Red Panda Bitmap incoming; will try to remember to give some feedback. It has 'fractional bit crushing' in addition to 'sample rate modulation' - does that count as a 'real' bit crusher? How about this? https://fxpedalrental.com/rent-pedals.html?bitcrusher=24
5. 2 wrong; Entwistle and Bootsy, which I guess means I got pretty lucky with the rest... Off to try the guitars now! Edit: 10/15, but I think there were only about 5 I was confident with...
6. Here are mine after 3 and a half years of amassing, trialling, side- and up-grading. I have a third board planned for my Vox Dealylab and another Red Panda and an Avalanche Run I fancy, but am not in a rush... The black one is the noisy one, the wooden is the ambient weirdness.
7. faceless fx Jasmine boost. Beautiful clean thickener that can break up slightly if you want it to.
8. I have one of the older pre-chromed ones, and like it a lot. I got it in... 2014? and haven't used it hard, but haven't had any problems. At one point I thought the onboard sub-octave was faulty, and sent it back to Ashdown to see if they could improve the tracking. They were extremely helpful throughout, but ultimately couldn't find anything wrong, so I think the sub is just a bit pants. But as decent and affordable amplifier I am a big fan of it.
9. Much like with the camphor single cut a while back this style really isn't my cup of tea, but it is a wonderful piece of craftsmanship, and I am certain that The Greek will be over the moon!! I have been excited to read every single update; great work.
10. I wouldn't class any of those as tutorials... Useful for learning a song? Depends on the viewer, but probably. An attempt to teach viewers the song? Nope. Even the video posters are titling them as covers (i.e. just a bit of self-expression) so I think it is a little unfair to penalise them for being poor tutorials. I have used these videos as tutorials, and found them helpful, but again, the first isn't pretending to be a tutorial; it's a cover with tabs! The second is a true tutorial, and taught me most of the song. 11. I took a punt on the Vitoos this morning; if it's as good as it looks I will be extremely pleased.
12. That's very kind, but I need it in Norway, so I doubt the offer is a go-er... The upside is that, coming from Sweden as they do, they are actually a pretty affordable option over here, so I am pretty sure I am just going to take a punt on a s112. Thanks though!
13. Done. Will be interested to see the results, and the conclusions drawn from them.
14. I have been deliberating over a couple of variants of these for a while now, and really fancy a s112 (or a pair...). Does anyone have any experience of the wide w212 as compared to the standard width s212? The standard is about 4 litres bigger (based purely on outside dimensions); would this make a significant difference?
15. I have a burgeoning vinyl collection, and it is mostly due to the improved artwork and physical ritual of setting up and really listening to an album as a whole, rather than skipping through something with a remote. I truly can't remember the last CD I bought, not because I have been collecting vinyl for a long time but due to streaming totally replacing them. If I want a quick music hit, I reach for my phone, or even Youtube, not a CD. If I want to really listen to a piece of music and enjoy it as a tactile experience as well as an audible one, vinyl over CD every time for me.
16. I have a RM420 and a wtx260. The Ashdown is much warmer sounding, but fundamentally coloured. The Eden is way cleaner, which is something I have always noticed in their amps; they add no 'flavour' at all. Which you prefer is up to you; I like them both! I would say that I dislike the sound of the Ashdown distortion, and that the sub tracks poorly for me (even having sent it to Ashdown to have a look at it), but really enjoy the amp as an amp, particularly for rock. The Eden is smooth. Both are loud enough for what I have needed, but can also DI out. I know that neither amp is quite what you asked for, but I thought they were similar enough that chiming in was worth it...
17.
I will report back for everyone after it has arrived and been taken for a test drive!
Please do; I have been trying to find 'the' power supply for ages so have been following this crop of threads with interest, and this one seems to tick my boxes.
18.
Rancid's bassist is stupidly good, and is fairly prominent in the mix. Check out their "...And Out Come The Wolves" album.
Agreed. Same holds for Operation Ivy of course, who I think I preferred. Fat Mike from NOFX is also killer. Rage Against the Machine have loads of really playable bass riffs; they are great to jam along to. Tool have a dream bass tone and amazing riffs too.
19. Ok, progress has been slow but steady. Here is the wiring loom from Kiogon; volume, blend, push/pull tone which splits the humbucker. Ordering process was super easy, and the rig came with good instructions, the offer of additional help, and even a little screwdriver!! Top man. My initial plan was use the jack hole in the pickguard for the third knob and mount the jack in the side, but there isn't room for this. So, the volume knob will have to be a bit higher, as below. It looks fine, and during tests doesn't foul my playing hand, so I think this is ok. The pickguard is slightly redder than I might have chosen in person, but still within tolerable limits. Importantly, the pattern has a high resolution, and isn't at all pixelated. The humbucker is a monster! So chunky! Some might notice that this is upside down; totally on purpose, as this gets the single coil part in the traditional jazz position (based on my Sandberg). Can someone please confirm the distance from bridge saddle to first pole on a Stingray? I think I read 54mm, which again encourages upside down positioning... Finally, the knobs from China on the left, with the original Squier on the right for comparison. This are a smidge taller and have a less rounded transition from wall to top, but fit the pots very well and look the part. So far, so good! Once I am certain about pickup position, I will get routing, and then it's more or less putting the pieces together!
20.
Again different to a normal Jazz, the bridge pup is slightly further back making it more 'barky' and an even thinner neck than their regular jazz profile, beautiful balance. The pre-amps and the slanted neck pup do really interest me, I think it would give just a bit more beef and authority, in some areas, and very responsive from what I have heard. Is yours a masterpiece, or aged?
White body, pickguard and matched headstock (I think this was pretty common at one point). The body colour has mellowed nicely and the rosewood fretboard has some nice variation in it; not too homogenous and dark, so balances the white. I like it at least. Theoretically the slanted pick up should be an advantage eh! But, I have a removable acoustic guitar pickup that I can spin around to adjust the angle; I'm not convinced I can hear a difference... Anyway, that's another story. Sandbergs are nice things!
21.
I am very jealous Ben, Umbo is high on my list to add to complete my set. If you are in Bristol, as am I, I may have to come and stare at the precious from afar....
Alas, no! I was based in Cornwall at the time, but the bass in question is now with me in Norway; if you are ever in Trondheim I got it in... 2011? And haven't played a jazz since that I preferred.
22. I have an Umbo 4 string. It's killer. Years ago I spent a whole day in Bristol trying to buy an American Fender, but couldn't find one that justified the price tag. Some random guy in a shop told me I should try "that one"; I was sold within 10 seconds of playing. It oozed quality. I think the pickups are passive Hausells (spelling?). Big range of tones. I'll never get rid of it.
23. I got really in to deco hunting about 3 years ago, and have bought three; a JB-75N, the Thunderbird-a-like, and a fretless acoustic. All are great guitars. I have moved on the jazz (at no profit, and with full disclosure of its deco nature) only because I couldn't justify two 4 string fretted jazz basses and it wasn't as good as my Sandberg (hardly a fair comparison though...). Weighed an actual tonne though. My point: I gave up 'the chase' about 2 years ago because things would sell out literally instantly; I think the thread worked out that there were probably scripts running to automatically purchase decos as soon as they were listed. It rather took the fun out of it... Finally, I too am seeing more and more HB decos listed as "as new, but with small ding on back", often at double or triple the price decos cost. It rankles me slightly, not so much because the seller is trying to turn a profit (why not try?), but because I feel information/the full story (which is available, but is pretty niche) is being unfairly withheld from potential buyers. It's a funny one.
24. The only time something like this has happened to me is when I reduced string gauge (your G has dropped, D too?). The nut notch was therefore too large, and I guess the string could vibrate past the nut when I dug in. I used a half-collar of paper under the string in the notch to fill it out, and the buzz stopped. Was a bit ugly, but I didn't want a new nut. Eventually it somehow settled down and I could take the paper out which was a relief. Might be worth a try?
25. I have just bought a bass head, and the whole process was completely smooth. Prompt and friendly communication, accommodating and reasonable, and totally reliable. A stand up Basschatter! Do business with confidence.
