1.
How do Jazz jams work? I've never been to one... I always hoped they would be the kind of thing where someone told you what key you were going to jam in and off you went? I'd like that I'd be less interested if you were expected to know a load of standards I would never have heard of...
Typically Rob if you're just turning up as a guest, you'd do a couple of numbers of your choice. Some jams want to know what tunes before, others just want to know you're coming. They vary hugely - some can be a closed shop, or the standard pretty intimidating, others very welcoming.
2. That's great James. There's one near me I'm heading down to next month. Where was this one, and what tunes did you do?
3. By the looks of things it went for £9,999,999.
4.
Promise not to take the mickey yeah? Over the course of the last year I've gradually been thinking more and more about a broader approach to improving myself as a bass player. Mostly, this involves doing a lot more exercise with the logic being that I'll be a better bass player if I'm fitter - fuller awareness of my own body, especially in terms of having a stronger core, which gives me better posture when standing to play. I've noticed some lovely improvements - it started with stretching before gigs/practising and has now snowballed. I've also been practising mindfulness meditation (don't worry, not at kale smoothie drinking, collecting ptolemy from baby yoga class, yin yang tatoo on my wrist level) which was for other less fun reasons, and have found that it really helps my playing/improvising/practising mindset in a number of ways. Is anyone else thinking in these terms? Am I barking up the wrong tree here? I do really feel that it's almost impossible to separate the musical aspects of my life from the rest, but it's not really spoken about that much (or least I haven't heard it discussed).
Completely with this and finding more people coming round to it. We all want to keep playing for as long as possible, and the more we look after ourselves only benefits this. Embrace the kale smoothies What you put into your body really matters as well.

6. I imagine it will just electrocute you and blow your amp.
7. Those fat slug strings make me feel slightly sick
8. Can't afford, don't need it, not sure I'll like it, and into the house under cover of darkness. Textbook GAS Dave Look forward to seeing some pics Dan
9. as the title says
10.
Are they Japanese basses? I thought they were Korean - not that it matters.
Andy you're probably right. Their site doesn't say much, for some reason I had it in my mind they were Japanese. Korean makes more sense given the price. Black 5 V7 sat idle in a Thomann basket. Does the wife really need a birthday present this month? Maybe she'd like a bass
11.
Got mine today at 3.30pm.. It's a wonderful instrument. It feels great-very tactile. The build quality seems very high, very well finished. The action is reasonably low out of the box & with the pick up cover on would need to come down a touch. I've just had a little bit of time playing & the electronics will provide a huge range of tones with some really nice growly lows & sweet highs! Here's some pics.. https://www.flickr.c...57650941569855/
Huzzah! What a start to the weekend. Great pics, god bless those Japanese factories
12.
Metallica
Of course! Hiding in plain sight
13.
My overseas gig itineraries... 1996 - The Musical Box, Atlanta (early incarnation of the Genesis tribute band) 2000 - King Crimson, Prague (their tour didn't originally include a London date. guess what happened) 2007 - Genesis, Prague (one of very few standing gigs on the "reunion" tour) 2007 - The Police, Vienna (ditto) 2008 - King Crimson in Chicago/Dave Matthews Band in Alpine Valley (and folk I met at the KC gig took me to see Extreme at the Chicago House Of Blues, I turned down their offer of the Scorpions) 2008 - Dave Brubeck, San Francisco Symphony Hall 2011 - Phish, Denver (3 shows) 2011 - Kraftwerk, Munich 2013 - Kraftwerk, Dusseldorf 2014 - Alain Caron in Paris (on honeymoon, still trying to work out how I managed this)
Kraftwerk in thier hometown sounds amazing
14. Sold!
15. Helsinki to see Metallica, many years ago. Hardnosed vodka drinking Finns were nowhere to be found, the gig was all earplugs and rucksacks. And they stop serving alcohol once the band came on. Seeing a band in a stadium where it doesn't actually get dark is a strange experience. All in all, boring city, quite boring gig. Never seen either since!
16. Level42 all the way
17. do we count bands we've played in? Edit - too slow!
18.
On the 5 string unboxing, he really needs to get that leak sorted....
He really does. I like his little moans as he unwraps it.
19. bumped
20. Blaze Publishing doing ok as a business but their transition to online seems dire. The 'Gear' section of BGM website was last updated in July(!) and doesn't carry videos. Nothing there to entice you to the print product. Gear reviews in the print product read like rehashed press releases, they seem terrified of upsetting any manufacturer. You get a load more insight from a 5 min Dood vid.
21. What is it with people selling basses with several missing strings? There was another one a few days ago. Doesn't fill you with confidence on the rest of it.
22.
I couldn't hold out anymore...I've just ordered the Black with rosewood and tort pickguard. TOO MANY PEOPLE HAVING BEEN SAYING NICE THINGS ABOUT THEM...DAMN YOU!!!! I just had to give into the GAS
Good work! 4 or 5 ? Do let us know what it's like - really keen hear a comprehensive BC review.. Current plan pulls the trigger on a 5 late March. Still can't decide what finish..
23. It's terrifying. Looks contagious
24. Sound wise Ray, we just stream everything from phone through a bluetooth Bose speaker. Sounds pretty good. Life moves too quick at the moment to have time to sit back and appreciate a decent system. Once I'm confident the kids won't spread jam over Santana - Live in Japan triple gatefold, all the vinyl will come back out.
25.
not wanting to highjack this thread but does anyone buy CD's anymore I have loads that I want to sell but not sure if the market is there anymore. I guess Ebay is the way to test.
Some stuff just isn't available on stream / itunes, so you might find some buyers. I use Deezer / iTunes - but they don't have this. What is probably my 5th copy arrived in the post today.
