if the string is a wider bore, surely the nut will need to be both wider and deeper ? Or it will sit relatively higher to the old smaller bore string. Sandpaper definitely wont do depth, not with any degree of reliability anyways

AS NEW Peavey Millenium Active Bass Sold Pending
Geek99 replied to Thunderbird's topic in Basses For Sale
I'd do it now - no one has any money after Xmas. Its not overpriced and they are really good quality. I only moved my five string Peavey on as it broke the three-bass rule in my house. Yours is the four string version exactly (in hardware terms) so for anyone interested I can heartily endorse how good these basses are. Nice range of sounds, 18v preamp, logical controls, quality hardware and a slim neck with great fretwork. -

I'd say you have an outstandingly generous wife-to-be
It's definitely a philosophical outlook. I personally don't see the difference between someone slowly relicing a bass over 45 years through use and Mark compacting that same process of use into a shorter time period. I'm still buying a bass that someone else has reliced either way! It just happens that apparently, some people think that their opinion somehow allows them to tell us which kind of 'someone else's relicing' is the acceptable and which one isn't... Well it's my money and I'll do what I want with it :-)
yes, exactly what I think.

Thanks --and the action ?
-
Thanks Understand general nut adjustment principles - looking for a steer on normal values for nut height and action on an acoustic
-
Could you give me a clue what yours is at ? Hear what you're saying but I think bridge action is a large part of the problem
-
I'm not sure duress would really work. He might not enforce his clause, but he has got the right to. Whether it would be worth his while legally is another question
-
I have a generic acoustic bass. I think its straight as alreluef at 10th using a capo on fret 1 is about right - credit card thickness - action is still suitable for limbo dancing Strings are phosphor bronze 40- 95 Am I right in think the only thing I can do is file down the saddle ? What action is respectable for an acoustic ?
I'm 46 ! It's a hobby to keep me out of trouble ha! Frustrating but also therapeutic !
I had no other training and sucked at music in school. I don't get a lot of practice time due to small children but I read a lot and think my way through it as s substitute for real physical practice. It's slower but you can resolve issues by thinking them through. I've played an open mic night now I have two lessons for you to consider : It's important to remember that you will have good and bad days, and to be able to bounce back from the bad days Practice is more important than flash gear -
Don't think it does?.......
I apologise - misread replacement as relief
-
Yes - see my comment above about relief
-
You can buy a magnetic tin which is better I use it a lot but I helpfully the neck relief section is not near the action section. But that's my only criticism
H Al and John. Any tips on first starting out on bass? I got a great bass tutor so that's a start! Just looking for pointers to get the most out of learning and playing?
I think taking lessons, and being very aware of how much you don't know is an awesomely good start, Gomez. People get into some very bad habits, and can get very disheartened, from trying to push their way through alone. Best of luck, you're starting from a good place. There is no such things as a stupid (on-topic) question. Just ask, someone here will know for certain pretty much anything you'd want to know. Everyone was a newbie and beginner once.

I have a 5 string peavey BXP millenium I want to list soon, if that takes your fancy?

yes, if you chat with the organiser, they might get someone suitable to give you a chance. I got taken on by a guitard who was very generous with his time to get a song together for the next OM night. He suggested a 12 bar in a key of my choice and encouraged me to play with the arrangement a little, so I made some of the repeat-chord bars walk up and down across two bars rather than repeat the same pattern and changed notes so I was near the starting note of the next chord rather than jump a long way. He liked my ideas. We had a quick run through using an acoustic bass first which was a huge confidence builder. I have to say that my Stingray copy sounded amazing through an Ampeg, and still good even when recorded on an iphone by a friend. Found out last time that said guitard's band has been opening up for acts at the O2 last month. NO pressure there then.

Or even visit....

That's what happened on my first time but it left me determined to prepare properly so it doesn't happen again
-
Go ! Don't hesitiate Take your bass as at least it will be a talking point. You can be "the only bass player in the village", you don't have to play. I took it each time - observed the first time, met some people and played second time. 12 bar is fine if you're a beginner, one of my contacts doesn't decide until ten minutes before what he is going to play and was happy with a 12 bar so he could improvise

in my very humble opinion, anything that gets people playing and sounding even vaguely good is worthwhile. Yes, knowing your scales is important for understanding why something works, but it can come along second; confidence and enjoyment should come along first; otherwise learners lose heart very quickly.
