1.
I knew that Lieber & Stoller wrote a lot of hits, but just been to Wiki and there are a few there I didn't realise were written by them, or at least collaborations.
For anyone with an interest in Leiber & Stoller this is a must have: Joan Morris & William Bolcom "Other Songs By Leiber and Stoller'. Released in the 70s on the Nonesuch label it has some Leiber & Stoller classics sung by a Mezzo-Soprano with Piano accompaniment. Their version of 'Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots' is worth the price alone!
 2.
If your gonna cover a song make it your own , fantastic arrangement this compared to Dion's version Donald at his best
Yes great version but how does it compare to the original (which of course wasn't by Dion)?
 3.
And that muted UK 60s session players sound (eg 'Everlasting Love')
Russ Stableford.
 4.
I've still got the Melvin Bragg Southbank Show and the Lernny Henry doc on The Funk on good ol VHS!
Remember it well. Let's hope this one is better.
 5. It looks like a decent introduction to funk for the uninitiated. I hope there's some rare footage of bands and not too much talk by those who were far too young to be there and really know what it was all about. I pledge my allegiance to the Funk.
 6. In keeping with the title of this thread............. http://youtu.be/122__aBqSvY Big Jim pulls out all the stops on this one.
 7.
thanks, but then I won't stand corrected. eva still is better:
Close but no cigar. Jo Stafford recorded an English language version of the Yves Montand song with words by Johnny Mercer and that is generally thought to be the original. http://youtu.be/EiWXMzp1Pv8
 8.
I don't know, but this version touches me the most of the ones I know.
Covers better than the original That's the title of this thread.
 9.

Which 'original' version are you comparing that with?
 10.
+1 That's the one. About the only Beatles cover that's better than the original.
Oh i dont know. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da must run it close even though it must have been one of The Fabs finest moments.
 11. We've been down this road before on here and what it has revealed on more than a few occasions is that the song that people assume or take to be the original version actually isn't.
 12.
Really? The Beatles version is OK, but I can't stand Joe Cockers version all the histrionics just seem so fake to me.
Totally agree. I have loathed the absolute Cocker-up of that song since the day it was released. Awful.

 14. It might just be a case of someone being really nice and selling their bass at a fraction of it's real value.
 15.
Is having three fretless basses always bad?
You obviously misunderstood my post. I didn't say it was bad, just that i couldn't justify to myself having three Fretless basses. That's all.
 16.
I particularly like some of Haden's work alongside Carla Bley in the 70s, like the Liberation Music Orchestra album or some of the material on Escalator Over the Hill. The lyrical solos are still there but the material has a real sense of adventure to it, plus I'm a big fan of Bley's arrangement style.
I saw the Carla Bley Big Band that included Lew Solof, Andy Sheppard, Bob Stewart, Steve Swallow, Don Alias etc a few times in the 80s & 90s and also a saw great gig by her at the Bracknell Jazz Festival in 1984. Always interesting and wonderful arrangements.
 17.
Right - I get it now. You are officially the Sherlock Holmes of the post my friend!
Thanks! On a serious note it was a really nice bass that i only sold because i had just bought another Fretless bass and couldn't justify to myself having three Fretless basses.
 18.
This is great - being able to trace the guitar back to its original owner, but why did you keep the box for all these years and sell the guitar?!?!?!?!?
I didn't. I sent the bass in it when i sold it. That was a photo i took when i sold the bass.
Also had Chris May reply to my email.
He also replied to an email i sent him just after i bought the bass. This is his reply: 'The top wood is maple - these basses have been made in small numbers (just a few dozen) - but the spec' is due to change with the next production and we are dropping the solid top at this level of production - so your bass will be fairly unique!'
 19.
Or
Superb!!!!
 20.
Wow, this thread has veered of on a tangent that would not be out of place on the twilight zone!
http://youtu.be/NzlG28B-R8Y
 21.
Well, f*ck-a-doodle-doo! That's a supernatural level of coincidence! So - did you think the action was too high?
Not for me, no.
 22.
Just hope the talking heads are people like Jerry Jemmott and Mike Stern, and not Stuart Maconie.
.....and no Jools 'Boogie-Woogie' Holland and Jamie Cullum please. That would be enough to make any Jaco fan launch his 1960s stacked knob, nitro finished, de-fretted, relic'd sunburst Fender Jazz Bass off the nearest cliff.
 23.
What? You were the original owner?
Yes!
 24.
How come you've got the box?
I haven't got the box now but it's what the bass came in when it was bought new.
 25. I'll think i'll pass on them and just treasure the memories thanks.
