1.
when people talk about 'white man funk', they're the benchmark. Actually not too far from a lot of current function bands.
That's a very good point. I really like that comparison.
 2.
Duffy does a pretty good version in the soundtrack for The Boat that Rocked.
To me that's the sound of a singer shouting it instead of singing it with the emotion the original had.
 3.
I do intend to YouTube the hell out of him to find more. I'm just wondering which tracks in particular may have inspired my fellow basschatters... A title change methinks!..
Good luck with your search. Anthony Jackson has played on hundreds of sessions over the years and albums some of which would have used more than one bass player which makes it harder to work out who played on what. In the early Sigma Sound Studios days he played on numerous Philadelphia International and Gamble & Huff sessions including The O'Jays, Three Degrees, Billy Paul, MFSB and many more. Of course he's played on sessions by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, Ashford & Simpson, Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Madonna, Simon & Garfunkel etc but he can be heard on some great albums by Lee Ritenour, Al Di Meola, Norman Connors etc etc. http://youtu.be/3-MRnhWcImE
 4.
IIRC, he got his first writing credit for that bassline.
Yes, not bad either to have a writing credit with legends like Gamble & Huff when you're only 21.
 5.
I agree, but this stuff does nothing for me and to be honest I prefer British Hip-hop, something like this for a start.
Not sure what the point of that is as far as the op is concerned but it did amuse me because if you were a fan of British Hip-Hop in the 80s this is what was on offer. 6.
I only own two Hip Hop records, this and White Lines! I never came across any others after that that worked for me, the more the genre turned to Rap, being gangster and popping a cap in someone's ass the less it appealed
You're obvious not a fan but that's no problem but there was a lot of great stuff around from 1979-1984 for anyone who was interested in it.
 7.
How good is your singer? The problem with this number is the power of Lorraine Ellison's performance. She's the only one I've heard that nails it. She's singing it, everyone else (including Sam Brown) shouts it.
I couldn't agree more. This is powerful singing and not shouting and how it's meant to be done.
 8.
That's why it's aged, it's not really relevant any more I'm sure it was great at the time but issues move on and new artists take up the baton.
I'd be interested to know how old you were when The Message was released.
 9.
80s Hip-Hop has aged terribly IMO, I think there is better stuff around today.
I have no idea what age you were at the time (1982) but it's probably as much about social comment of the time as it was about the music.
 10. There is so much to choose as he has worked on so many sessions (just look at a list of who has played with) but this is a good place to start...... http://youtu.be/Ll3uipTO-4A
 11. Another classic..... and another..... http://youtu.be/WqAGg7dEcLc

 13. This was used as the theme tune for the Robbie Vincent show on Radio London in the late 70s/early 80s. http://youtu.be/rA-hcDR6q2o
 14. Great record. I bought this the day it was released in Summer 1982. It was an important record as far as hip-hop goes because it was a hit and was one of the records that brought hip-hop to the masses. It was also a time of political unrest and uncertainty and a time of protest the likes of which we don't see any more and it fitted in perfectly with the mood of those times.
 15. This is a good one from the 70s..... and another..... http://youtu.be/8ChKPEKMw74
 16. Don't worry kids cos the Kojak theme ain't all that anyway. On the other hand this is synth soaked cheeseville USA....... http://youtu.be/PzAJ5P97MsA
 17.
WTAF.....right that's it i'm off..... (picks up music stand and leaves)
Sorry i had to be the one to break the news.
 18. Hold on kids!!!!!!!!! The version in the op is NOT the original TV version. It is a version by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.

 20. I can imagine what being trapped in a lift at Smooth FM must be like now.
 21.
Technical side aside, I think the production during a certain period was incredible including the 80s , almost like every minor piece of percussion or bass ghost note sat exactly right and not clashing with anything else, and was meant to be there. This is the opinion of a consumer not a pro. A bit before the 80s but like this ...
That's because this was arranged and produced by someone who knew what he was doing having spent years in the music business before making it as a solo artist. This has the Barry White stamp all over it. Just listen to those strings. P.S. I'm just playing a vinyl copy of that Gloria Scott LP at home and the production is just fabulous.
 22.
Perhaps the OP should change the title of the thread to 'Recommend me some stuff in the style of Rock Candy Funk Party' if it has to be as narrow as that.
Excellent idea.
 23. It might be worth reading post #14 before everyone just lists their Funk favourites.
