2. There are a couple of threads on here about Darling Dear...... http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry2495913 http://basschat.co.uk/topic/221825-jackson-5/page__p__2270791__hl__darling%20dear__fromsearch__1#entry2270791
 3.
I really hope this is not just another inaccurate documentary by people who don't truly know or understand the subject, but I will watch it anyway because you don't get a lot of funk on the tellybox these days.
It's not that it's inaccurate it's more that it's a very basic primer. If you know anything about funk it won't tell you anything you don't know already. I know that the narrator only says what is in front of him but i'm sure it would have been better to have some voice this who had been there at the time and had some personal experience of what it was like to be there. If i want a potted history i can read that anywhere although there were a few comments from those who were around at the time. There was a lot going on at the time like Vietnam, the chance of a nuclear war and protests in most major cities around the world and this had a massive influence on music. There are lots of good journalists still around who know their stuff when it comes to funk that they could have used in the programme. Listening and watching is one thing but one of the (very few) joys of getting old is that you can say, you really had to be there.
 4.
The actual real 70's jazz went from unplayable neck diving junk to silk, the silk ones usually got worn out and the junk ones left in cases.
Do you have a 'real' 70s Jazz Bass?
 5.
it was refreshing to see how prominent the bass was though... right at the front of the mix.
Of course................It's F-U-N-K!!!!!!!
 6.
to be honest I'm not sure I could identify with the whole ethos behind the music, not being a black american in the 70's myself... but it sounded good
That would be the ethos behind the music according to the producers of the programme? I like thousands of others here in the UK at the time who weren't black, didn't live in the Bronx, Watts or 12th Street Detroit but still appreciated the music so much so that the UK record companies pressed thousands of funk LPs in the golden period of funk from the late 60s to early 80s. The programme did give the impression that you had to be a black American at the time to appreciate or indeed know anything about it. That's presumably because their research was based that side of the pond and the impact of funk only in the US which seems strange as the programme was aimed at a British audience many of who would have been well aware of the impact of funk in 70s Britain..
 7.
That was the point where I realised both the narrator and the script writer both learned about funk from the internet about 2 weeks before the show was filmed.
8.
True... I haven't got the slightest idea about funk and I loved it
...but have you any idea about it now?
 9. Great show for anyone who doesn't know their Funk from their Elbow but for anyone else forget it. If anyone is old enough to remember The Story Of Pop then next time your in the loft just find the one with Funk & Soul on the cover and you won't have to watch the BBC programme as it's about as in-depth as that. What went wrong Ron Bykowski?
 10.
So easy on here to search for X bass and see what prices the are ACTUALLY selling at.
I'm not sure how you would know what a bass ACTUALLY sold for here on BC. Lots of people have made offers for basses that i've had for sale but no one apart from me and the buyer would ever know the actual price paid.
 11.
Most of the covers I love, are of songs I like so much its hard to say they are better, just an awesome song to start with made different, in a fantastic way .. Absolutely amazing cover ..
That's another cover that was more well known than the original for many years. Certainly up to c1990 and the renewed interest in Gil Scott-Heron. Having heard both versions around the time they were released i still prefer the GSH original for it's more sparse production. Both great versions though and both sung by people who you believed they knew and meant every word they were singing.
 12. Great album and Boz Scaggs first after leaving the Steve Miller Band. My brother bought this on it's release and we probably wore it out over the next few years in our house. Still have a copy in my collection though. A Muscle Shoals classic. This is probably my favourite from that album......
 13.
About 90seconds of James Brown vocals (copyright ex's?) - I'll give it a glance, but us old farts were around at the time, so I'm not expecting much that's gonna rock my world................
As another old fart who was around at the time i tend to feel the same. Whenever i watch programmes that are about a part of my youth i now realise how my dear old Dad used to feel when we watched a TV programme about WW2.
 14.
Always thought the ELO vs of Roll Over Beethoven pisses all over Chuck's original but the purists would probably disagree
Not only the purists i hope.
 15.
That is why there have been houses on the market in this country for over 18 months in this country, something that is just unheard of in aus.
....and unheard of in London as well.
 16.
I think Ringo does a great job of "You're Sixteen". Johnny Burnette is a great singer and does sing technically better than Ringo, but I think his recording suffers from the rather boring arrangement.
It's very much an age thing with a lot of covers. The Johnny Burnette arrangement is very much of it's time but at the time was anything but boring. I think it's a generation thing that we are never going to agree on and shouldn't agree as we are seeing them from a totally different angle and that's one of the reasons these sort of threads are interesting.
 17.
Original: Sorrow by The McCoys Cover: Sorrow by David Bowie
This is an interesting one because i would imagine most here on BC would not only be more familiar with the Bowie version but also heard his version first. I bought the McCoys 45 the week it was released so was used to years of hearing it before the Bowie version arrived and that makes a big difference on how we feel about cover versions.
 18.
Original: You're Sixteen by Johnny Burnette Cover: You're Sixteen by Ringo Starr (with a little help by Harry Nilsson and Paul McCartney)
The singing of the great Johnny Burnette and Ringo both bring me close to tears for completely different reasons. One of these is a classic and one should never have seen the light of day.
 19.
We are seeing a rather silly price spike in second hand bass prices ?
We're not.
 20. My only concern is that Lionel might not be MOR enough for the Glasto hipsters.
 21. The dentist i used to go to about 20 years ago was really into Ozric Tentacles and whenever i visited him we would discuss their latest LP. I think i was his only patient that had ever heard of them let alone seen them live and had their albums. Good band.
 22.
If we must ...
23.
Two years before Rod Stewart was the Chris Farlowe version of Mike D'Abo's Handbags and Gladrags.
They'll be saying next that Sailing isn't a Rod original. Is nothing sacred?
 24.
I read somewhere that Harris had never heard the Led Zeppelin (or any other) version.
I wish that i'd gone through most of my life not hearing it either.
