1.
Oh, I don't know about that. Townsend became disillusioned with Moon's limitations as a drummer. Why Townsend had Kenney Jones replay some of Moon's parts on both the "By Numbers" and "Who Are You" albums.
Kenny Jones is an 'OK' drummer, but... he was a disaster for The Who! It's well documented that as time went on Moon was becoming a bigger liability... but Kenny Jones???
 2.
Can the OP please make it clear that he's talking about originals bands here?

Exactly. If I'm just starting gigging my originals band, and we can't bring in a beer chugging following, why would I want to be paid?!? I'm so grateful to the venue or promoter for letting the band play in the first place. When we can bring in twenty people who generate £400 of pre-profit revenue for the venue, then I MIGHT expect £50 or something for the band, possibly.
What's the difference? Many here have said they do it for fun...Covers! Originals! What's the difference?
 3.
Is there the "pay-to-play" scenario in the UK?
Absolutely! It's common practice for an unknown band to 'buy onto' an established bands tour. Going back a few years, a band I was in had Duran Duran 'buy onto' a tour. It was during that tour that they were seen and eventually signed by EMI You could say that,"that was a wise investment".
 4. Don't have a problem with artists/bands playing for free - It's their choice! As for the olympics: They are quickly becoming a national embarrassment. I personally, would have nothing to do with them.
 5. Very interesting and enjoyable programme. Also a little surprised at Townshend's comment on Keith Moon. Fair to say that The Who would've been nowhere near the same band without him.
 6.
No offence, but the original question is just plain stupid. Might as well ask what music is best to play or what colour bass to use. Does anyone actually listen to music these days or are they too busy checking out the pick, the pups, the strings . . . . FFS!

More groove - doesn't matter More talented - doesn't matter More respected - doesn't matter This is a pointless, irrelevant and frankly bullshit debate tbh
Nothing like making a new member feel welcome You guys are clearly even more jaded than me
 7.
No offence, but the original question is just plain stupid. Might as well ask what music is best to play or what colour bass to use. Does anyone actually listen to music these days or are they too busy checking out the pick, the pups, the strings . . . . FFS!
Give the guy a break! It was his first post here, and I'm guessing he's pretty young and finding his way.
 8. Hi Alex, see you're new here, so I guess the question is serious You can "Groove" with both pick and fingers. Using both shows you are more talented. I have respect for a player who uses both...well! I would guess that these days many more players use fingers rather than pick, but one is no better than the other. FWIW I'm predominantly a 'fingers player'
 9. So would Boris Johnson, Little Stevie (and all others that reckon BS should have been allowed to complete his set) be happy to compensate Live Nation for loss of earnings? If they had allowed BS to complete his set there is every likelihood that the promoters would be refused licenses for future events, or at least have further restrictions placed on them. It will not have been a decision made lightly - no promoter likes to upset an artist. BS's people will have known the situation and most likely have pleaded with them to get him to wind it up. My guess is that either his entourage didn't have the guts to tell him of the problem or maybe Springsteen himself thought, "Nobody shuts up "The Boss...what the hell! " IMV half an hour over curfew is more than fair.
 10. For many years I would get my motor insurance through the Musicians Union, until, one year, I tried to renew and was refused on the grounds that I was a...er...musician???? Now with Kwik-Fit. FWIW As high as your quotes seem to be don't be tempted to lie or be deliberately vague in order to get a cheaper quote.
 11.
She claims to have played on many of the Motown hits that were credited to James Jamerson despite evidence and witnesses saying that Jamerson played those bass parts. She is a very good player, but I can't stand her because she wants to portray herself as more important than she already is.
Fact is, parts get replaced all the time without the musicians knowledge. There will (quite possibly) have been occasions when Carol Kaye replaced Jamersons part, and there will (quite possibly) have been occasions when Jamerson will have replaced Carol Kaye's part. Sessions were/are often scrapped and started again, and the musician might be none-the-wiser.
 12. 'the root and the fifth of the chord played at substantial volume on guitar and distorted to taste.' 'as demonstrated by thousands of amateur guitarists hacking out the opening bars of Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water' Who, by playing 5ths, would all be playing it incorrectly.
 13. Most of the truly great players are instantly recognisable. FWIW I've always been of the opinion that if you have a unique sound/style then you're half way there.
 14.
There's one that continuously seems to get faster and faster that works on the same principle
Think we've all played with drummers that work on a similar principle.
 15. Had another listen on PC speakers (slightly better quality than my laptop ) And, guess what? I still think the first two ascending and last two descending...sounds so obvious. But as no one else is hearing it, I am preparing my face for the egg that is obviously going to be heading my way
 16. 1st and 2nd ascending 3rd and 4th descending where's the answer?
 17.
and a third: 3. Is illegal distribution really really such a bad thing or an opportunity for free marketing?

Good question, and I think the answer depends on who you ask!
Yeah...good question! If you ask those that care about music, make a living from music or involved with music in any serious way, they would most likely tell you it's a 'bad thing'. Ask those individuals that jump at the chance of getting something for nothing, then I'll wager, you will most likely get a different response. As for 'an opportunity for free marketing?' who exactly are you to decide how a band should be marketed? If a band wants 'an opportunity for free marketing?' then it should be their decision.
Yes, it is wider than music but it's not always stealing. There is a large and growing 'open source' movement in the software world and there is loads of 'freeware' out there. Similarly, there are loads of bands that allow their music to be freely streamed and some even give away their music. Heck, a lot of bands play for free and, as we have discussed, some even pay for the privilege. Such things might undermine the market for selling such things, but that's life. It's hardly reasonable to make it illegal to give away music with the copyright holders permission, is it?
With a slight adjustment, I would agree with your post. As I said, it should be the artists/copyright holder's decision.
 18. Would've contributed much sooner to this thread if it were not for the fact that I've just spent 4 hours down t' local nick, trying to explain to plod that the Odeon management had no right to deny me free admission, on account that if I liked Men in Black 3, then, I might buy the box set...I mean, nobody's actually losing out, are they? What a depressing thread! Thought this was a site for musicians...jeez!
 19.
The record company don't know exactly how many gigs or dates but say it 'should' be 2 or 3 gigs a week for July and August and all would be well paid. The only date they know for definite is at a good venue in London
Considering how close July is, I would be very reluctant to cancel the holiday. If they are not sure of the dates by now, then, there is every possibility that they won't happen. Agree to do the gigs...OK, if they do happen, then, you're down the cost of your holiday, but better that than no holiday and no gigs. Trust me, I've learnt from bitter experience. EDIT: 'this seems a bit of an unprofessional way of doing things.' Unprofessional by who(?) Nothing unprofessional about not being available.
 20.
I said that I'd prefer not to have to learn any new songs for the audition.
Don't be surprised to get an email before the audition along the lines of, "Perhaps you would 'prefer' to not have to do the audition at all...good luck for the future!" The message comes across loud and clear that you're not really prepared to make much effort.
 21. There is one omission from that Wiki list. OK, he wasn't officially a member, but in 1974 a good friend and band mate of mine was touring the US with FZ, and was asked by the man himself to stand in for Tom Fowler who had broken his hand. He did the set from beginning to end, no rehearsals, nothing. Fortunately he was a big fan, so knew most of the material.
 22.
Listen, if we're going to bash anyone in this thread, why do we have to stick to poor old Peart (and I chose my words...)?
I really don't think there's been any "bashing" of Peart here. Just a discussion on a musicians weaknesses and strengths...all perfectly reasonable on a musicians forum. In any case, If there is any "bashing" in this thread, it probably started around about here :
Not entirely alone... While 'hate' is definitely going too far for me (well not that far, now that I think of it...),
23.
Maybe now's the time to check them out

Or, maybe not! With the Peart clip, I feel I'm watching someone playing at the very edge of his ability (perhaps he was just rusty), and struggling for ideas.
 24. Can't help thinking that maybe Bill Curbishly has been a little naughty and told only a part of the story. The Olympic organisers can't possibly be that dumb...can they?
 25.
I think he was ahead of the game in a lot of respects and all due credit
I think he probably was, and for that fact alone, IMO, is worthy of our respect.
but give me Ian Piace anyday..
For sure, another great rock drummer. Both have/had totally different things going for them.
