I've used Thomann 4 or 5 times, and every time been staggered at the speed of delivery. BTW Never received a faulty product.
Why do you think.... Thomann are a competitor.... If you were in their shoes and your customer had bought some kit from your competitor and then came to you when it went tits up because you're local.... how would you feel?
If I offered a repair service in my shop, the more problems my competitors had with their products the happier I would be. Are you saying that shops are only happy to fix products sold by them?
Sale of Goods Act states that the seller would be responsible for faulty goods sold. The customer would not go to the manufacturer unless it was purchased directly from them. You are covered for upto 6 years against any manufacturing defects (such as parts not suitable for the job) & would be entitled to a repair, replacement or partial refund. If it's within the first 6 months, then it's up to the seller to prove that it's not a manufacturing defect.
Yes, of course the seller is responsible, but IMO if a product is faulty, he is not to blame.
So who was the retailer that you took it too..... I visit on average 3-4 music retailers per day and I don't think I know one that would take in a repair that came from Thomann??
Why on Earth would that be? Seems rather odd!
That is the bare minimum that is required of a remote seller under Directive 97/7/EC - the primary legislation for which the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 (SI 2000 No 2334) is the UK Parliament's implementation. A seller would have to be outperforming the minimum duty placed on it by law before I'd think about complimenting its customer service.
You may well be right...but, in this day of unanswered emails, phone calls and general feet-dragging by on-line retailers, prompt service and resolution is a result.
Just to clarify here, I wasn't actually having a go at Thomann.
No, that's clear. My post was more in response to the following...
WTF is it with Thomann?! They seem to send out loads of dodgy gear.
When there is a faulty product then, IMO, the blame is with the manufacturer... unless the suggestion is that Thomann are deliberately buying in cheaper, faulty products.
My reaction is that the responsible thing to do is to let someone else do it, put the work in for a future opportunity, and get a few lessons in the meantime so you get the correct techniques down.
Yeah, I agree. While I understand the 'Challenge', the I'll never know till I try philosophy, I think it's pretty bad form to accept a gig for an instrument you've 'NEVER played'. It may work out, but there is every possibility it will be a disaster.
I know there are gonna be exceptions (this is the arts we're talking about!), but do you generally find: Things always sound better when me and the drummer change with each other...if the drummer changes style / pattern I am gonna change too.
Absolutely YES...& NO!
OR I find that sometimes, even though the drummer has changed his/her pattern things can sound better if I stay on the same groove.
Again, the answer is, absolutely YES... & NO! You seem to be asking if there is an unwritten rule in this regard...there is none. Yours ears and your band-mates should tell you what works and what doesn't.

It's another tool! It will put musicians out of work...the question is: To what degree? Probably not to the degree that string players have suffered. As suggested, a large proportion of what we hear as strings/orchestras are, in fact, virtual instruments. Of course the main consideration here is cost. Imagine paying 50-100 musicians for a session. Drummers too have suffered to a degree, there are producers who like total control and the options that the likes of Superior Drummer provides. It's possible that Trilian will fall into this category. As for, "It won't sound real", or "It's about how you play them", you may be right, but many producers, music makers etc couldn't give a toss if it sounds real. They will likely do something quirky with it that will be all the rage for a couple of years, and we will all be pulling our hair out about it.

Just a little history: I started playing music about 1966 (aged 11 or 12), quit my day job at 19 to become a full time musician. With the exception of one or two short periods early on I've been a full time gigging musician ever since. I quit my job to fulfil my dream when I was young and irresponsible, without a wife and children to consider. I was living at home with my parents, so no bills to speak of - they supported/indulged me. I was enticed from my steady glassblowing job with the promise of £5 a week on the road - not a great amount, but enough nonetheless... Of course, the £5 a week never materialised, but I spent a great 5 or 6 years learning what life was like on the road sleeping on speaker cabs and bumming floors from punters for the night - I wouldn't change it for the world! Then in 1980 I was offered a gig that... blah! blah! blah! With all this experience I should be able to offer you shed-loads of advice...but, I can't! Y'know... as I type this, the only thing about your post that I'm remembering is the bit about "wife and children". I have 2 little ones (5 & 8) and I'm not sure that If I had them when I was 19 I would have made the same decisions. The kids are your biggest responsibility.
Oh, I don't know about that. Townsend became disillusioned with Moon's limitations as a drummer. Why Townsend had Kenney Jones replay some of Moon's parts on both the "By Numbers" and "Who Are You" albums.
Kenny Jones is an 'OK' drummer, but... he was a disaster for The Who! It's well documented that as time went on Moon was becoming a bigger liability... but Kenny Jones???
Can the OP please make it clear that he's talking about originals bands here?

Exactly. If I'm just starting gigging my originals band, and we can't bring in a beer chugging following, why would I want to be paid?!? I'm so grateful to the venue or promoter for letting the band play in the first place. When we can bring in twenty people who generate £400 of pre-profit revenue for the venue, then I MIGHT expect £50 or something for the band, possibly.
What's the difference? Many here have said they do it for fun...Covers! Originals! What's the difference?
Is there the "pay-to-play" scenario in the UK?
Absolutely! It's common practice for an unknown band to 'buy onto' an established bands tour. Going back a few years, a band I was in had Duran Duran 'buy onto' a tour. It was during that tour that they were seen and eventually signed by EMI You could say that,"that was a wise investment".

Don't have a problem with artists/bands playing for free - It's their choice! As for the olympics: They are quickly becoming a national embarrassment. I personally, would have nothing to do with them.

Very interesting and enjoyable programme. Also a little surprised at Townshend's comment on Keith Moon. Fair to say that The Who would've been nowhere near the same band without him.
No offence, but the original question is just plain stupid. Might as well ask what music is best to play or what colour bass to use. Does anyone actually listen to music these days or are they too busy checking out the pick, the pups, the strings . . . . FFS!

More groove - doesn't matter More talented - doesn't matter More respected - doesn't matter This is a pointless, irrelevant and frankly bullshit debate tbh
Nothing like making a new member feel welcome You guys are clearly even more jaded than me

It was his first post here, and I'm guessing he's pretty young and finding his way.

Hi Alex, see you're new here, so I guess the question is serious You can "Groove" with both pick and fingers. Using both shows you are more talented. I have respect for a player who uses both...well! I would guess that these days many more players use fingers rather than pick, but one is no better than the other. FWIW I'm predominantly a 'fingers player'

landlord switched off the mics because of over run

So would Boris Johnson, Little Stevie (and all others that reckon BS should have been allowed to complete his set) be happy to compensate Live Nation for loss of earnings? If they had allowed BS to complete his set there is every likelihood that the promoters would be refused licenses for future events, or at least have further restrictions placed on them. It will not have been a decision made lightly - no promoter likes to upset an artist. BS's people will have known the situation and most likely have pleaded with them to get him to wind it up. My guess is that either his entourage didn't have the guts to tell him of the problem or maybe Springsteen himself thought, "Nobody shuts up "The Boss...what the hell! " IMV half an hour over curfew is more than fair. -
For many years I would get my motor insurance through the Musicians Union, until, one year, I tried to renew and was refused on the grounds that I was a...er...musician???? Now with Kwik-Fit. FWIW As high as your quotes seem to be don't be tempted to lie or be deliberately vague in order to get a cheaper quote.
She claims to have played on many of the Motown hits that were credited to James Jamerson despite evidence and witnesses saying that Jamerson played those bass parts. She is a very good player, but I can't stand her because she wants to portray herself as more important than she already is.
Fact is, parts get replaced all the time without the musicians knowledge. There will (quite possibly) have been occasions when Carol Kaye replaced Jamersons part, and there will (quite possibly) have been occasions when Jamerson will have replaced Carol Kaye's part. Sessions were/are often scrapped and started again, and the musician might be none-the-wiser.

'the root and the fifth of the chord played at substantial volume on guitar and distorted to taste.' 'as demonstrated by thousands of amateur guitarists hacking out the opening bars of Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water' Who, by playing 5ths, would all be playing it incorrectly.

Most of the truly great players are instantly recognisable. FWIW I've always been of the opinion that if you have a unique sound/style then you're half way there.
There's one that continuously seems to get faster and faster that works on the same principle
Think we've all played with drummers that work on a similar principle.

Had another listen on PC speakers (slightly better quality than my laptop ) And, guess what? I still think the first two ascending and last two descending...sounds so obvious. But as no one else is hearing it, I am preparing my face for the egg that is obviously going to be heading my way
-
1st and 2nd ascending 3rd and 4th descending where's the answer?
