1.
Is that an HH amp in shot behind the drummer?
Sure looks like it, I noticed that before anything else The guy is very good, so is the drummer, but I'm amazed that anyone would think this is the pinnacle of bass playing, amazed. There's nothing new here, in fact I've heard it all before and I only hear this stuff on Basschat. I think there's a fundamental problem in some people's perception of what makes an innovative bassist. Trouble is, people often don't hear subtlety, they don't hear the music, they forget that innovation is not just technique, it's also sound, space, harmony, texture, movement - COMPOSITION. If this geezer had never made this video, and you could only hear him on band recordings, odds on only a few people would have ever mentioned his name. Sadly, to get 'noticed' (if that's even important) you have to make videos like this, and it's not unusual playing and certainly not innovative. It's just a very good bassist and drummer.
Nope, you've lost me. I think the lower horn cutaway is a nice contrast. The balance of the curves is different to a double cutaway but not any worse than a Fender. What's the point of an upper cutaway any how? It doesn't serve a purpose.
Nice contrast? In the way dog sh*t contrasts with a paving slab?
There are a few very nice looking single cuts out there...Fodera Beez Elite for example. A Telecaster is a single cut BTW...so is a Les Paul and a Gibson Byrdland...I've yet to hear guitarists moaning about how they look so bad.
It's got that dreadful lower horn cutaway though, they look so ugly, an aesthetic nightmare rivalling that of the suburban amateur garden designer's split-level decking.
I think it's a tricky design to get right, as it's so unbalanced in form. There are some lovely ones. I agree that we're kind of conditioned to liking 'double cut' basses, and it's a difficult hump to get over ;-) I always thought its main purpose was neck stability
Warwick could have chosen this beauty in their SC design competition ..

 8.
Warwick 5 string necks are frakking enormous though. I had a 5 string Fortress once and it sounded perfect, but the neck was so painful for me.
Might have been a broadneck mate.
I think it's because more of the body is in contact with the neck it's supposed to have more tone. Maybe more neck stability too, although I can't help thinking with a truss rod acting on a neck that's fixed on one side it's more to twist than a normal neck The main benefit is that no one will want to borrow your bass
Or sit near you on the bus However, I respect a person's right to choose an uglybugly bass.

 14.
Which great bands? I can't open your file, by the way. Probably best to post it as an MP3. Or send it on a TDK C60
The youtube link works. Dunno what that file is, I couldn't open it either. Oddly,I like some aspects of the music and voice, but I can't stand the w***y 'this is real music, not like all the other sh*t' attitude. I find it insulting. I find it annoying and naive. Shame init.

 17.
For me, dorkiness != ugliness. That's not what dorkiness is about, it's more an endearing awkwardness. In this respect I think some people are missing the point. If this was just another "ugly bass" thread, why not just call it that? My vote is for the Gibson RD Artist. Huge. Neck sticks out further from the body than usual making it quite a stretch but the scale length is normal. Looks like a melted Thunderbird. Absolutely bonkers circuitry. Can pick up radio on some settings. Can sound like tuned springs on extreme EQ settings. That's dorky. It's not ugly, it's not difficult to play, but it has some things about it that have you scratching your head going "eh?". Yet it makes me smile like this when I play it: Now I look dorky, playing a dorky bass. THAT'S dorky.
Oh f*** off, that's not dorky, that's KOOL. EDIT: Dork apparently means stupid, inept or unfashionable.
 18.
I've never known anyone pull by rocking a headless bass ;-). * * Steinberger in a reggae context excepted
I had three splendid young women asking me about my Hohner Jack after a gig once. It was in Whitby though.
 19.
Single cut basses. Vile.
Isn't this the the dorkiest, most f***ing vile thing you've ever seen? Like a hippo with leprosy.
 20.
I think some of it is them wanting to do their own thing. I got Geddy and Alex's solo albums and thought they were awful. I thought the writing was on the wall then, and it proved to be the case, for me anyway.
Victor is a wikid album! Not heard Geddy's apart from the previews in iTunes, they didn't grab me.
 21. Any of those manky funguswood bookmatched occasional table basses are dorky. All of em. They look so disgustingly musicianly. That's why most of em are used for jazz and jazz fusion and sh*t like that. THE BELLS! THE BELLS! Singlecuts. Quasimodo dorkfest.
 22.
I have a lovely CV Precision which I really like. However, I have the chance of a lovely 1983 USA Precision. Now this might sound daft but will the 83 be so much better than the 2010 Chinese made CV? I just don't know because I really like the CV but also like old basses. Can anybody help please? Thanks Mike(Pestie)
Mike, like others have said, it really is all in the hands. You can get every spec, description and measurement you want, but it will never be a substitute for holding it and playing it. Even if you play it, it may not be set up the way you like it, and you'll often need to be able to assess whether it can be, can the action go lower? Is the neck relief right for you? etc. You like this CV, so if it feels really good, that's the one. I've played a few and they look well made and feel good. I doubt it really needs upgrades, but if it does it will probably be the electronics and pickup. I would also be tempted to get a good luthier to replace the nut with a well cut bone or corian one, that can make quite a difference in tone and sustain, and give it a good set up. I'm still in love with the 1983 USA Jazz you sold me. I leveled and dressed the frets as obviously the higher ones were almost fresh while the lower frets were more worn, that's made a difference - I can get the action lower. The neck tilt adjuster is very useful too. But it's all in the neck, and this one is my dream Fender neck, the most comfortable neck in all dimensions, shallow and slim, it's gorgeous to play. It's my only bass now. Oh, and the Bass Doc made a lovely brushed gold PG for it So I think you'll be perfectly fine with your Squier CV. If you fancied it, you could always buy a Fender USA Body from the Stratosphere (ReliableFender) on ebay, he has lots of loaded bodies you could fit the Squier neck to if you wanted to go that way. I have bout from him before, excellent service. 23.
thats the aim real music live recordings that got the great bands signed not the x factor or pop princesss stuff that gets out there today
You sound bitter.
 24.
This was recorded very basically on a version of ableton not out of daddys pocket might not be the best sound
The sound's not bad actually, needs a damn good mix. Your singer's voice is ok, sounds like he means it, but the lyrics don't say much at all, and band like this needs some f***ing politics, and to be able to express them effectively and interestingly, otherwise the music is virtually pointless. I like that it's out of tune, it sounds almost deliberate. I'd keep that aspect if it doesn't freak your ears out (most other musicians will hate it but they may not be used to microtonal out-of-tuneness like some Arabic music). BUT you had better play f***ing BANG in time, otherwise it just looks like you all had a crack hit and had a go at a song, totally amateurish. Get your timing dead on, I'm talking ninjatime here, and it will sound like you CHOSE to sound that way, you made an aesthetic out of being out of tune with each other, and it has a certain charm. I dunno, you might just be taking the piss. But at least taking the piss has some attitude
