  8. You can't assess your 'level'. It's relative to your own perception of 'levels', and I bet 95% of musicians don't even know what they want to do, or are capable of, without progressing to the next 'level'. Which then propels you into a brief moment of understanding followed by a realisation that you can only relate your current 'level' to your previous 'level'. It's personal, and you need to understand what you want to be able to do, and that will probably keep evolving. Most people don't understand their own motives and potential so it's largely impossible to assess your 'level' in a useful way. Just assume you can always improve and get closer to your current aesthetic, but understand your aesthetic will evolve and change over time, and that you should possibly get a good tutor who understands you if you find you can't seem to achieve your current aesthetic. Does that make sense?

You build a substandard bass and take it to a show??!! And then sell it for FIVE f***ing GRAND??!! Where the f*** did he find THAT business model? There was small a guitar company I read about in Guitarist probably 8 years ago, can't remember the name, but they looked good and unusual. I tried one in a shop and it was glorious! It felt superb to play and sounded lovely. But it wasn't the shape and colour I wanted and they were about a grand. So I visited their stand at a guitar show in Olympia. They had a display guitar at the front of their stand. The strings were all to cock having a mis-aligned bridge. Looked like a typical 1970s 3-bolt Fender Jazz with the strings hanging off one side of the neck. I had a look around the stand but I was disturbed by this and didn't play any of the guitars. I thought of pointing it out but thought better of it. I visited a shop in Denmark Street a couple of months later that had a whole bunch of them (I'd forgotten about this brand by this time), I played one but it was dirty and the strings were old and dead and corroding. That was the end of that. I've had a whole bunch of guitars since then and I've ended up with a Deluxe USA Strat which I love. Builders who don't pay attention to their own business lose a lot of business. Fender and Gibson will mop up for them even thought their QC is often highly suspect.

  22. I usually write and record my lines at home rather than in the studio. I get sent rough mixes with no bass obviously. I usually play it in headphones quite loud and sometimes dance a bit if it's a groovy kinda beat. In my head I'm singing along to it and often out of that a bass line will emerge, I repeat the process and I'm looking for drum and vocal stuff that I can augment or accent, and also thinking about the same for the chords in terms of some cool harmony opportunities that don't sound twee or tacky. Another way is just playing along to the music but more like a guitarist, lots of notes and rhythmic patterns and accents, just having a laugh. After a while I'll start repeating the things I like and chisel away until the bass line essence is sculpted. We decided to do a cover in the rehearsal the other week, a weird version of Megalomaniac by Incubus. Straightaway hearing her arrangement I knew it needed texture rather than a bass line. I made a patch on the POD with high compression, flanger and loads of quick bright plate reverb and delay. I swelled the volume pedal into root octaves on the three chords, then changed the root to the fourth, and on the last pattern I hit a minor 11th (I think ) on the last chord and it all sounded glorious, bandleader loved it. Wrote it on pure instinct on the spot and I love it. That doesn't happen often. I think if you have some confidence, and play what you get off on, that's a good start, but I'd advocate being as versatile as possible so you can take direction from the producer or artist quickly and easily. EDIT: I'm not a pro but I play for some pro artists.
