1.
Two words: Scott Thunes...
Sounds to me like you don't know the full story, or Zappa's opinion of the situation.
 2.
actually I'm playing slap double bass so yeah I'm definatley the beat but its damn difficult as the vocals are so pronounced that I find it difficult hear anything else
You need to hear the other instruments more then, have you got monitoring sorted out?
 3.
Violin , ukele, amd guitar and 3 vocals !
Does the whole band play in time pretty well generally? Who sets the time normally? The guitarist? In situations like that I find myself creating a pulse by tapping my plucking fingers on the the strings between the plucked notes, a bit like table drumming. Can't do that in the studio, but in rehearsal and live it's cool. Like anything it takes practice mate. You could try recording your rehearsals and playing along at home perhaps.
 4.
Although I'm not that amazing I've always thought that my timing was pretty good , certainly its something I've always worked on. But I've been playing in a new band which doesnt have a drummer and I notice that its so much harder for me to keep time that I've had to stick to playing root note only to focus on counting. To make matters worse the singer doesnt quite sing on the beat so I feel her pulling me away from the one and I have to fight to get back onto it. There is an acoustic rythm guitar so I try to " lock " with that but TBH its just not the same as playing with drums !! Has anyone else experienced this problem and what would be the best way of practicing this be Thanks
What other instruments are you playing with mate?
 5.
Ahhhh.... It all makes sense...
6.
There are always exceptions to any rule that you care to set up, but stereotypes are there for a reason. I wouldn't say it's always the case, but most bass players i've known have been easy going, laid back nice guys, most front men have been rather egotistical, most guitarists have been showoffs (and also extremely unconfident about their own skill) and most drummers have been somewhat... ummm, animalistic...?
Yeh but isn't that just Portsmouth?
 7.
My feeling is that the type of person you are attracts you to a certain instrument.
Wot, like this you mean? Violin - Kids who allowed their parents to bully them Viola - Kids who turned up late for their first school music class French Horn - People who buy garlic crushers and electric pepper mills Tuba - Significant self-esteem issues Trombone - Lonely people who buy suspicious ammounts of baby oil Piccolo - Dog lovers Flute - Cat lovers who hate dog lovers Tympani/Percussion - Asbergers Cello - Blokes who sit with their legs wide apart on the tube Oboe - Combover Clarinet - Chintz curtains in the upstairs toilet Bassoon - Keep an eye on the kids Triangle - Spliffheads Double Bass - Fat sweaty c**** with left trouser pocket full of snot rags
 8.
Bad day? In my opinion . When discussions get heated the other guys are always more passionate about getting their feelings across and sometimes someone needs to calm things down. We're all there to make sure the music is good.
Not at all, I am actually feeling quite cheerful. How do you know bass players tend to have fewer bad days than the other guys? That's pure conjecture on your part. I can't remember ever having a heated discussion in a band about the music, the sound, the arrangements, nothing. I know it goes on in some other bands, but being a good musician involves having social skills. Maybe the OP is talking about cover bands where the motivations are often different than in originals bands. I have also started to think a common misperception on BC is that most of us are in cover bands. Oh, and I have met bassists who might have trouble calming a dead sloth, we are not all happy clappy cool dudes.
 9.
This looks like the opening lines to....... " Is this you ? Well read on....For only $9.99 per month, you can rid yourself of the daily grind of the five knuckle shuffle...."
11.
Yes we have all been there! Dealing with the ego and temprement of the "front man", battling with the guitar players volume and the feckin drummers lack of dynamics! The keyboard players strange habits to mention a few! Yet us bass players, the glue between the drums and rest of the band always seem to be the good guy! The one that just wants to enjoy it!! Thoughts?
No, I have NOT been there. Try being a good front person or singer/songwriter without the attendant ego, self analysis, even self loathing, and having to write lyrics and music that are meaningful and compelling without being a person who cares about and notices a lot of sh*t that goes on. Delivering that to an audience and in a studio takes a lot more than learning some bass lines and standing at the back in your jeans and t shirt knocking them out with a beer and a smile on yer mush, being the 'glue'. As for the rest of the band, you actually just sound like you're playing with poor musicians. You know, you paint bassists in a very bad light, another way of reading what you writ is that bassists have the easiest job, and that we are all happy clappy ***** who want a larf and bang out a few tunes. Not all bassists are the glue, not all bassists just want to have a good time and get on with it. Everyone in the bands I'm in plays a significant part in the delivery of the music and takes their role very seriously, me included. It should be enjoyable but it's not a game.
 12. Nice one Barrie. I still love being in Kit's band, totally pro and lovely people. Same with London Zulu and Sheema. It makes it all a real pleasure and gigs are always fun, it's great hanging with these people. It should be this way for everyone really, but it's like any other team activity with different personalities..
 13. It won't be anything visual of any use or ornament. I reckon it might, in fact SHOULD be, adjustable neck relief along the LENGTH of the neck so you can set the apex and profile of the neck curvature between about the 9th to the 16th frets. I think that would make it possible to set up the bass in a much more comfortable way to suit the string gauges, scale length and tuning. Necks bend at different places so a new truss rod system to control that bend could mean better feel and playability and above all, consistency. It may have been done already, never heard of it though. Not convinced I've explained it well either
 14. Seems to work for me. I think, over the past three or so years I've had one or more Basschatters show up at one of my gigs about 50% of the time, they usually let me know on the thread or by PM. Even had messages asking when we are playing near them. I think it sometimes just doesn't LOOK like people are using it.
 15.
i will buy this bass the original colar was black but the onwer painted in white, don't know why. its from 2009 and the pickups are the seymour duncan. its better then MEC?
I'm guessing here, but I reckon he wanted a white bass. (I painted my fretless Corvette Standard white, it was that disgusting honey violin stain, you could see the wood grain on the body ffs! Hideous) MEC pups are excellent, SDs are too. You got it for about the right price. Great basses, congratulations.
 16. Good performance but I don't like the mix at all I'm afraid. The vocal is too loud and it needs some treatment, eq and some compression probably, and maybe a little delay and reverb. The guitar is too quiet, the bass is indistinct, and it needs to sound much more punchy overall. Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh mate, but I find honesty is the best policy, unless the music or whatever is so rank I can't possibly comment without causing grave offence
 17.
minor 7 = original theme from Star Trek tritone = theme from the Simpsons Perfect 5 = theme from Star Wars
Minor 2nd - JAWS
 18.
i think the thread has worn its self out somewhat.
Anyone would be worn out after all them heavy duty shits.
 19. We are playing the lovely Proud in Camden next Thursday, it would be ace to see a few faces from BC there x
 20.
They didn't have Tena Lady in the old days.
All the Tena Ladies All the Tena Ladies Put your hands up! If you like it then you shoulda Put your ring on it
 21.
i dont give a monkeys how well they do or how much money they make. cant think of any memorable winner or music. some people are pretty good.. the problem is within the production behind these winners. its bloody awful throw away music. i dont think its much to ask, to have decent music on TV.. ever wondered why knowone plays a musical instrument on the X Factor. its all about making as much money as possible. there not bothered about the quality of the music. why would Simon Cowell give a sh*t about the integrity of what hes putting out. hes not a musician.
Yes but you're not Joe Bollocks eating chips and cheese out a styrofoam tray watching X Factor are you. If 'decent' music was important to the public they'd all be listening to RUSH, or Zappa, or Debussey, or Public Enemy, or Leonard Cohen. Most people aren't interested in music, they want X Factor, Eastenders, My Three Most Amazing Shits on Channel 5 .. correspondingly, they want music that cheers them up or makes them dance or reminds them of their first shag, fed to them by a DJ that makes em laff. Anyway, there are good musicians on the X Factor, in fact there are a few BCers who work on the show, and some of the contestants play instruments. Some of the contestants have been in bands and been doing what a lot of us do. It's just a f***ing entertainment show man, it's got F*CK ALL to do with music, I wish people would remember that. Music's the conduit for the entertainment, the contest, nothing else. A successful recording artist like Leona Lewis is a byproduct, a bonus. Also, don't make the mistake of thinking all musicians have integrity, and that the audience don't.
 22.
Mrs H likes it so I tend to watch it but this year I am refusing to watch the auditions. I will relent once it gets to the boot camp phase but I just can't stomach the auditions. I find no entertainment in making fun of people. It's not too bad if it's an arrogant wannabee I suppose but too often for my liking they cross a line. I find the whole thing a bit exploitative.
Totally exploitative, of course it is. Lady xilddx detests the auditions, and they make me uncomfortable too.
 23.
Oh God - this made me cringe. It's a bit like the Victorians visiting Bedlam for a few laughs.
24.
The X Factor is not just a talent show. It's a show that offers a serious financial and personal reward to whomever wins (and often the final 10!). Why should it be that some 16year old sod from wherever should be able to bypass all the years of hard work and sweat and tears that everyone else has to put in and, in all likelyhood, will make enough money to live off for the rest of their lives? It's complete horseshit. I appreciate that it's just some Saturday night entertainment. I appreciate that, in a real sense, only a few select people actually do quite well for themselves out of it. But it just makes me feel sick. The only reason people that enter this competition is because they're under the impression that they can work for a few years and then retire to a life of luxury and gameshow appearances. It makes a complete mockery of all the working people in this country who have to work all their lives for a percentage of what these guys get given. I've said it before and I'll say it again; horseshit. Alex
Alex, the word is full of deluded muthaf***ers, some of them even have dreams. Their equally deluded familes and friends tell them they have talent and that they should enter the X Factor, some of them get through, they are chosen either for latent talent which needs grooming and shaping because they might be marketable, or they are chosen because they are going to look f***ing stupid on TV in front of millions of people and get pissed off or start crying when the judges tell them they suck arse. It's what some people enjoy as entertainment, that's all it is, one or two of em will have some sort of recording career, like Leona Lewis. Most go back to working at B&Q or whatever. All this crap about not having the right to be successful unless you've paid your dues is oppressive, and depressing. And an insult to ordinary hard working people??!! Come on man, what are you on? This'll cheer you up .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1mQ_B3Q65c
