Sure, but I am well aware that's a no win proposition because ANYTHING can be criticized. And it's doubtful someone is going to be receptive to someone with whom they want to prove wrong. How do you attach an mp3 here?
You misjudge me, old thing. I'm just interested to hear your songwriting. Of course it's prompted by your claims, but I will be listening as a music fan because that's really all I care about, music's not a competition. Have you a Soundcloud account you can link to? Much easier than the file management system here and I can't work out how to attach a file either Cheers.
All the great music that lasts through the age is memorable from Bach, to Beethoven to Gershwin to the Beatles. "Nice music to listen to is fine while waiting in the dentsts' office. Music being memorable has nothing to do with memory. I can learn and memorize a part pretty quickly, but that doesn't make it memorable music. Most people know nothing of opera but they can hum Nessun Dorma or Paliacci because the melodies are so memorable. And One Direction don;t have memorable melodis, that have REPETITIVE melodies -- or what I call "nursery rhyme" melodies. That isn;t good songwriting either, but it is better than ES in regard to construction. Just using a lot of changes and dense chords doesn't mean much. That's how I used to write before I learned how to write better songs. What criteria am I using to make the judgement that ES songwriting is lacking? The same as anyone else's -- opinion. And I think my opinion is somewhat educated. Also, the fact that she 's got a ton of promotion and no hits says something.
May I hear some of your music please?
Personally I'm starting to feel a bit uncomfortable with the amount of slagging of that we give this bloke here. I'm not in anyway defending what he does, but some basschat members are starting to act like a flock of vultures fighting over a not yet dead carcass, or a gang of playground bullies, in their eagerness to get in and give the bloke kick when he's down. Not very edifying, and In my opinion this is not basschat at it's best.
Yes but we aren't allowed to take the piss out of other basschat members so it has to be done to someone who isn't. Don't you ever take the piss out of people when they're not around? Alain Caron perhaps? Or even Bradley Manning. It's really great fun and makes you feel good. Give it a try some time. (Can a carcass be alive BTW? And is this Phillips geezer dying or something?)
I managed to get to the bit where he started soloing and then stopped watching because I figured he was just going to keep soloing. The backing he laid sound sounded terrible. Genuinely terrible. Too many bass guitars sounds bad. Chords on a bass guitar sounds bad unless there's very little else going on. All buzzy noise and a glottal swamp of mids. Someone take his looper away.
Can't disagree with that. If you had listened further you'd have heard a guy leaving no space at all, relentless jazz funk noodling we've all heard before a thousand times. I get depressed hearing it, but some folks like it.
While we're on the topic, have any of you seen the promo page for the new Mac Pro? Provisionally, it looks like an utter beast of a machine. I might sell this MBP and get the Mac Pro when it comes out, if I can afford it. My guess is that the base model will be about £2,000, but it's really well specced, and at the moment, I'm considering getting a PC to run games on anyway. Getting the Mac Pro would mean I didn't need to, just partition the HD and run Windows for games.

Hell yes... http://www.apple.com/uk/mac-pro/ Like I said - it's an investment - i.e. buy this and you'll never need another computer... looks utterly sick.
OUCH! Looks incredible.
Ha! Agreed, but Esperanza isn't exactly "unknown." She got an Grammy, she'll have to be happy with that. : ) And is this really "jazz?" it's more R&B. I think ES is tremendously talented but I have to say, her music leaves me a little flat. 10 seconds after this song was over, I could play the bassline but I couldn't sing a single lyric or melody line. It just wasn't memorable. And for that reason I don't think she'll ever crossover to having mass popular appeal.
It's about being lovely to listen to rather than being memorable and being able to play the bassline. If you want memorable, listen to One Direction. I have the Esperanza Spalding album, I love it. And this is a genre of music I usually detest (it's that sort of Snarky Puppy territory that makes me puke a bit in my mouth), but she brings it alive with her writing and voice and overall vibe. Being memorable as a quality factor is totally subjective init. Depends on how good your memory is aswell. Also you say she lacks in the songwriting department. On what criteria are you making these judgements?
A thrash metal guy, a funk gal, a melodic fretless player, a deep groove guy, a tapper, a fusion soloist, a rock pick player, a chord melody player etc. Seemed pretty diverse to me. I can think of a few people I'd say were equal, or maybe better, but I can't say this or that style was missing.
Jazz does often get forgotten doesn't it

Are high end basses for investors or musicians?
xilddx replied to Pinball's topic in General Discussion
If a guitar does not play beautifully, and is not well built, and does not have great tone, no matter how much it costs and what rare materials it's built from it is not an investment. Only an idiot would buy an old expensive instrument that's poor quality as an investment. Having said that, many old crap Fenders sell so there are idiots around Words fail me that people would buy a NEW poor instrument as an investment. -
the fanned fret was not a problem for him, it's the 5th string he is not used to, but he loved the sound and the feel of the neck, but he did the other 2 sets with the Ibanez as he felt more at home with the 4 strings. He will tell you himself of course, he has a great rig, his amp and cab are really good and both basses sounded very nice.
Cool!
It was humour. Dave's band, (davebass5 that is) its called blow out, he was playing in a place close where I live, I said to him one of these days you've got to try a Dingwall and this was the chance for him to try it live in the band, the other one was the newest aquisition he also wanted to have a go at. the fan fret thing was the incriminating evidence of him joining the "dark side"
I wish you'd said that in the first place. How'd Dave get on with it? I found comfort in fan frets within a few seconds.
This has probably been posted before but why is it bass and not base?

Hi W11ATO, Try this link, http://www.etymonlin...x.php?term=bass And this explanation from a talkbass forum member, Way back in the dark ages when music was first being discovered and defined. There was this famous singer in Italy, Leonardo L. Bassus (that became Basso, once the italiand stopped speaking latin). He had a voice that the likes of most Europeans had never heard He could cover the E flat in the lower stave all the way up through the F above middle C. his voice was so deep, and so hip that a guitar makerbuilt an instrument to duplicate Leonardo's voice.
It's a postcode lottery.
Some interesting players although a lot of it is a bit too slappy or soloey for me. There are so many other great players out there too that didn't make it on, no shortage of inspiration for bass players on the internet these days.
And that's the thing isn't it, as a representation of a variety of bass styles and skills it's way short of the mark. There were a couple I liked, but the general gist of it is one geezer's idea of what he likes to see in bassists, and he's very limited by what he's heard and what he likes. The first guy doing the Tom Sawyer slap thing was awful. Zero beauty. Andy Saxton is excellent. The guy doing Roundabout was very good too.
Sorry guys no full trades except if that Warwick Stryker is still around but even then that's a maybe. Also maybe partial trades as well. I'm not sure about the 34/35inch scale problem. I heard somewhere that Warwick built every bass with a 35inch scale with no deviation.
No that's not correct. Measure from the nut to the 12th fret, should be 17inches. All standard Warwicks should be 34in scale length.

Who gone through simple to complex then back to simple bass?
xilddx replied to badboy1984's topic in Bass Guitars
I gone from passive MIJ Squier Jazz, to active headless Hohners, to active Warwicks, to active MIJ Jazzes with J-Retros, to active Warwick with a chrome body, to passive 1983 USA Standard Jazz. I adore my passive 1983 USA Jazz, my only bass now. It's all I need and want. At the moment -
Thanks folks! I really appreciate the kind feedback. It was meant to be a quick effort from me this month, but it ended up being quite a tricky project to put together. There's obviously a nod to one of Basschat's famous in-jokes at the very end Good to hear y'all dig it.
BRILLIANT!! Oh the beginning is such a great idea too! Love it mate.
Hello all. I have a Boss Gt6b which I use on all my gigs. I always use the tuner, I sometimes use the overdrive, though I'm never really happy with it, and I sometimes use the Octaver, whichI love, but isn't needed in my set all that much. The expression pedal is useful for turning the delay send on the vocal channel on the desk up and down via midi. I take my desk D.I feed from the pedal direct and it sounds pretty good. But.. I'm dreaming of a small 4to 6 pedal board with a psu, tuner, sans amp/Tech21,overdrive,Octaver. Would it be a waste of time? I would lose the ability to change patches for diff songs, which I rarely do but it's still a nice option to have, But would I gain a better tone and FX from the lovely separate pedals? Comments gladly accepted.
I've had boutique pedals and a Fender twin for guitar. I sold it all and got a POD X3 Live that I use for guitar and bass. I love the sounds I can get from it. I loved the sound of the effects and an amp too, but the weight, cost, lack of versatility, transportability, connectivity, reliability etc means that for me the POD wins hands down. I've done numerous guitar and bass recordings with the POD - I'm currently flying in guitar and bass tracks for a pro album with a signed artist and the producer/engineer loves what I've done, had great feedback from the artist too. BUT, there is a big learning curve and the interoperability of the effects, drive, and eq takes patience and experimentation, but then that doesn't involve swapping valves and making circuit mods on an amp, trying loads of effect pedals, getting the right overdrive pedals (Blackstar HT Dual was the best I had, the Fulldrive was quite nice too). You have to go with what thrills you though, my mind changes often so a POD is ideal for me. You may find the right amp and the right cab combination, and a few good effects is what gets you off. Hope you get your holy grail.

I switched to Apple a couple of years ago and I adore it. Lady xilddx was after a new laptop and me and a friend both said Mac, she said she didn't want to spend that amount. Then another female non techy friend said she got a MacBook Air and loves it, Lady xilddx duly got a MB Air, and she adores it. She was amazed at how easy it was to use, and how pleasant. My MacBook Pro has never let me down, and although it cost a grand over two years ago, I could probably get £500 for it right now. They hold value really well. Lovely to use too.

Everything Everything's new album- a provisional review by Milton.
Like, bump. I've had Man Alive and Arc on a lot at work lately. In between heavy stints of early '90s rap like Snoop and Cypress Hill. But anyway: It took me a while to get into Arc (where Man Alive grabbed me pretty quickly) because I think it's been watered down a bit to try to appeal to a broader audience, but I think they've struggled to dilute it successfully because they actually really meant what they were doing on Man Alive, so Arc sounds a little bit too soft, too considered. One thing they are is very clever, struggling a little to find an audience but show me a band worth an audience that isn't. And there is no better bass player in modern pop music and I will fight anyone who disagrees with rubber imitation knives and nuchucks.

Actually I am disappointed that so much bandwidth here is given over to Victor Wooten who has the worst bass sound I've ever heard and no audible soul whatsoever but just so happens to slap faster (and unfortunately less tunefully) than anyone else every in history, when you've got this geezer who is a living breathing example of how to be an awesome bassist and he's totally ignored because he's making actual music instead of making solo bass guitar albums.
Yep, agree on both counts. Jeremy Pritchard is a wonderful bassist and musician, but he'll be ignored or not noticed by most bass heads. Context innit. -
Yeah - there's some good tunes on it, but (IMO) it's not the return to form it's made out to be. Maybe part of the problem is that albums are too long these days. There's bound to be some filler. And some of the interludes are straight off a 90s Marillion album. At least Geddy's playing bass properly again :-)
I don't get this return to form thing. I would have detested it if they had decided to return to the styles of their heyday, it would have sounded so contrived. I think they made the album they wanted to make.
-
I don't mind prog or poppy, as long as the tunes are good. But they ain't.
I can't stand most of S&A but CA has some cracking tunes on it. I think it's a great album. It's hard for old time Rush fans to deal with though. And his voice isn't what it was.
