I have some things planned when I get to the stage of not being in a band or want to be in a band anymore. I plan to do the following, a. Spend a large percentage of time, focusing 100% on double bass. At least a year or two, to get to a standard I am happy with. The plan at the moment though is maybe in around 10 years time or wait until retirement as I just don't have the time right now to fully focus on it. b. Spend a large percentage of time playing fretless bass. I am actually doing it now a little bit and loving it. However, I would like to sit down with proper training material/instructions etc and focus on getting good at it rather than dabbling in it. c. Learn to read music. Not sure any of those interest you.
+1 I like this idea. I am also going to be bandless when I move to London. I DO NOT want a similar type of band now. Im getting a little tired of DIY hardcore punk. It may well be really fun, but it is disorganised, full of rip of promoters, and no one appreciates a good musician of their instruments / setup. Eg small hardcore band bassist asks me 'mate can I use your amp setup?' To which I reply, 'what the Bergantino HS410 and Orange AD200b Mk3?' 'Yeah'. 'You do realise its worth about £2300 in total?' 'Is it, can I use it?' I usually just alow them to use the cab...but to be fair, they usually just take the piss. If I dont take an amp/cab, I take sansamp and DI. Its different with more pro bands and good musicians, they usually offer to pay if a tube goes, etc etc, or we organise to bring a part of the setup each. So....Im outta this now as of December. I also need a new project.
What's the position with your PA? If you've (possibly) wrecked your back at 19, the LAST thing you want is a huge bass cab to move about. Give your spine a break and focus on DI-ing through the PA until you get some recovery going. With a Sansamp or a Pod plus IEM, and your bass being fed through the monitors so the rest of the band can hear you on-stage, you should be fine. Unless you're part of a successful band that's just about to break through and which absolutely requires you to have a big stack behind you, then your priority has got to be to recover your health. If that means moving bands to one which is built around a big PA, then that's what you need to do. Sorry to lecture, and it's none of my damned business, but I can't believe that your response to wrecking your back is to buy another 4x? cab!
Actually, this is perfect. I agree, keep the cab IF you like it, but buy a good quality DI that can do a rock bass tone, like Sansamp BDDI or Aguilar Tonehammer. Then you have no cabs or amp to take. Granted, it doesnt feel right all the time, but I did it on tour and most the audience dont really know.

I'd like to go down again soon and test some new gear. Nice lads...most relaxed atmosphere ever...which is what you want! No pressure, no time limits, just good customer service.
You are going to have to do your own research after you have picked up a few pointers from here.. whatever anyone touts as the best around or whatever, you'll find just as many that don't like them at all... There are a whole load of cabs with good pedigree and RnD behind them out there ... and if you suffer from a bad back then lifting properly counts for a whole lot... Small and light should be quite easy to get...I'd concentrate on 12" cabs and see where they sit with your idea of the sound you like.. You'll need 2, I would think..and that should cover upto a 500 watts amp Or spend you money on getting your back fixed... Get a MRI scan and a very decent physio...
+1

Ive heard the VBA is great. I dont like their guitar amps...apart from the JCM 800. They all sound the same...boring.
-
C'mon guys Ive searched on here and talkbass. I dont want to use my DIY 'skills' id rather buy a nice board and power supply. Its as I said only for 3-4 pedals MAX....so if you lot think its pointless, please say. Ill never had loads of effects, im just more into the straight sound of my basses.

Hey Ive been a Rotosound Swing Bass 66 Stainless user for years. I fancy something different now. I would like to try something a little more expensive in the stainless/nickel roundwound territory. I do not like high tension strings, so that has to be taken into account. They would be used on either my USA Fenders or Stingrays. I do not want to fiddle with the setup/truss rod. Im thinking maybe DR Highbeams? Any other ideas? I would also like to try some flats, and after reading some posts, it seems the TI flats are very popular and are not too tense. Suggestions? I want to set myself up with everything I want before I move to London and become very poor, (temporarily I hope). Thanks as always!

I think a Genz Shuttlemax is probably much better than the original Shuttle. I favour Markbass amps purely because they are totally different to my other rig, and they are also much warmer than the Shuttle. I thought the Shuttle was a very good bit of kit, but sterile, and I just don't dig its aesthetics. Weirdly, I like the Markbass aesthetics! Shuttlemax apparently has more bottom to it cf to the Shuttle, and a better tube driven sound, but, its a BIG amp compared to the Shuttle. Still light mind. I don't think the UK has picked up much on the GB compared to Markbass. Maybe the trend will kick in hahah.

So...after reading that, the high beams are best for a lower tension?

Giving up on going smaller/lighter with cabs?!
Not doubting what you are hearing at all, but the reason is probably that the drivers themselves are possible not the same spec in that instance. perhaps even the cabs are tuned differently. If you get a neo driver and a standard ceramic driver that are designed to the same freq spec you should not hear a difference. People always will of course..... As has been said say though, 1x12's even with standard drivers are not heavy. My Aguilar GS112's are an easy one hand lift, but are now classed by some as 'heavy' in the small cabs bracket... Size is probably a bigger factor for more people than weight.
Size is definitely something id rather consider. Hence I need the 1x12s....anything larger and I may as well use my medium sized cabs. I still think the AEs were a great sound...and lighter. -
Sounds like you had a great trip I am still running a LMB head with my orange cabs and waiting for the day I can trade it in for a tiny terror, I am making massive efforts to keep the MB as new so I can get the best trade in for it Would you know how the terror compares to the Little mark clean Also the MB does provide a good punch through the orange, even when not playing to loud, I assume the terror will equal or better this?
I love the MBass clean to be fair...its a perfect amp to have in comparison with my Orange all tube beast. I have the best of both worlds. I think the Terror can definitely achieve good quality high volume clean, but I dont think it will be the same clean as the MBass. Im just going to get one anyway so I have a choice of 3 amps...but Im going to see how the pros review it. I must admit, I was very impressed, and it weighs barely anything.
I used to live in North finchley and i go to East finchly tube station every Sat to get picked up by my drummer. Both are faily nice areas. I dont konw what price your looking at but i think Finchley (as with a lot of north London) is pretty dear. Not been to Kentish town for a while but, and this is just my opinion, its not a perticualy nice area. It always looked dirty to me. What with Archway just up the road its just this side of the nice part of North lonodn. Again, just my opininon. Just up the road you have Hampstead and Highgate, very nice but very costly. Out of those mentioned all have nice areas but for me east Finchley would be my choice. Good luck with where ever you get.
Thanks for the advice! I think we need a few more visits to get a feel. We plan to move first/second week of January. New year new start, new band hopefully. The lass has handed her notice in already for mid-December, so no turning back!
What area of London are you liking at?
Hi Dave Well, we LIKED Kentish Town, East Finchley, Epping (even though really far out) and a few other areas. We want something thats quite residential and safe. If we need to go to the chaos of the nightlife we can via the Tube. Any ideas?!
You're going to need a very large flat when you move down to London, Gareth!
I know Me thinks the cab buying needs to STOP! Basses arent as hard to store. Hence Im still trying to find great small cabs that are modular. My girlfriend has already said we are aiming for a 2 bedroomed Flat so one room is all my gear. Excellent

My name is Gareth and I gas everyday for new cabs and basses. Amps, I think, I am happy with. Even though I am happy with my cabs and basses, I want more. This year, I have bought 2 new USA Fender basses, traded an Ampeg 810 + cash for 2 Aguilar DB212s, bought an Orange AD200b Mk3 with the OBC115 and OBC410 cabs, sold a Trace Elliot 400W SMX and added cash to get a Markbass LM3, completely reveamped my cables with OBBMs help, bought cab covers/flight cases for amps/amp bags and still got a Bergantino HS410 somehow, (thanks to Geoffs amazing price and helping with the meet). I now have 5 cabs, 2 amps, 5 basses. Guitar wise, I have sold my Fender Deville and Big Muff, and I have and Orange Dual Terror and PPC212 in Ltd 2009 White on order. This year has been the craziest year for gear ever. I still crave a small 2 x 112 setup. Preferably Berg. I am gassing for a Tonehammer, Lakland JO/DJ 5, and more cabs. Why? Because its the most fun stuff to buy EVER.
-
Problem with me is I want a bass for every tone Im after....so P, J and Stingray. Got them, but now I want a 5. Ive had to stop my cab addiction now though....I figured 5 is enough!
The people who claim ceramic magnets cause some special 'grunt' are akin to those that once claimed you had to use fifteens for bass, then that 8x10"s were the only thing to have, then that only guitar players use twelves, and so on and so forth. And probably very much like those who said that funny big four stringed guitar would never catch on. Or those automobile things because you had to have a man with a flag walking in front so you couldn't go fast anyway... Alex
I can totally see where you are coming from. I agree. But, there is DEFINITELY a different tone on the ceramic vs neo...I tested the two high end Berg 1x12 mini-stacks. The ceramic had tons more...how can I put it, smooth and chunky roundness, ignoring the tweet. The neo sounded great, but more light and aggressive.
