1. The problem with the 'Tube' Markbass amps is that the tube is miniscule. We are talking a very very small that is, as I mentioned, soldered to the board. It will have a very subtle effect, and to my ears doesnt really add what a tube pre normally does. You might like it. If you want a big, warm, clear and smooth sound, the Streamliner is hard to beat. If you want it more 'middy/low mid kick' the TC RH amps are also a nice option, and sound very tubey despite having ZERO tubes.
2. Beautiful birdseye. Love it.
3. Nice Mayones...Ive been looking at them and the Carvin SB5000. My only gripe is, as much as I can go down and test drive one, Ill want a different configuration, which means I won't get to test the one I want to buy! Such is life....what do you think of the Delanos vs Seymour Ds?
4. FYI Im going to email the distributors. So far ive told them I personally think £1300 is pricing them out of the market they are supposed to be in. I think they understand where I am coming from, but I guess our ridiculous VAT and import duties ruin it. If we are looking at £1100, then maybe its getting closer to what they should be selling for. I'll email tomorrow and see if there is any haggling to be done...they are brand new to Carvin (the dealers) so maybe they could arrange a deal. Otherwise, Ill have to walk away as it starts to get into 'normal superjazz' prices.
5. Ive had really good sound with a simple P bass and a Hartke cab/amp I borrowed at two outdoor gigs I played in summer. Really good even tone, but then again its hard to get away from a P bass tone with a P bass....its an amazing one trick pony.
6. I had a world with the distributor, they are around £1300 including the Carvin hardcase...not really competing with the Fender Deluxe etc, but much cheaper than the Sadowsky basses, and the Carvin's are built to to order in the USA
7. These basses are seriously good value in the US, and seem to have many players swayed to Carvin for a boutique jazz at a low-ish price. Has anyone tried one? http://www.carvinworld.com/isa/process/getGuitarsByModelID.php?model=sb5000 White/Rosewood/Tort....yum. Weird horn, but I kind of like it.
8. Keep at it.
9. Damn it...want!
10. The great thing about TC is they listen when you need help! They don't do what other manufacturers do (naming no names) and ignore emails, ignore phonecalls etc. TCE get top marks from me, and ill continue to be a customer.
11. I miss the posts from Clarky and Silddx...and ive also become more involved in playing live (and I have upgraded my iPhone and havent got the new one to view websites, and sold the old one!). I can't look at Basschat much at work (maybe for 2-3 mins) and to be honest, more important things are happening I need to address. I like to come on here and catch up, and Ive learnt a LOT over the past 2 years. I've also been very disappointed with new basses/amps from manufacturers I normally trust 100%, and it has taken the 'excitement' of chasing a bass or new rig. The economic situation seems to have driven prices up, and customer service down.
12.
This is the title instrumental from Nyx' 2007 album 'Torn from Chaos'. You'll recognise the Metallica influences here. You'll also see its light years from what I do now* http://search.4share...Torn+From+Chaos * played on Warwick Thumb 5 BO for the sake of bass nerdistry
Clarky on a Warwick 5er?! What is going on?! Cool stuff
13. Why not get an American Standard and use a high quality pre amp pedal like the Tonehammer? This enables true passive tone, and flick the pedal, and you have an 'active bass' kick. No mods, no fuss, and no issues with switching the onboard pre if you don't like it.
14. Do you want a warm tube-type tone, with a little bit of that colour that tubes add, or a more straight up 'flat amp' like the Markbass (eg a little bit more clean and sterile)?
15. What tone are you looking for? After a recent experience with a new product and Markbass, id say Genz Benz are hands down the safest bet...they will do anything to put your amp right should it have any problems. Markbass do have a good reliability rate, but their afterservice falls way behind Genz. If you like the warm full tone of the Markbass LM2, you will, IMO, like the Streamliner 900. Its sounds huge, a very full usable low end, sweet articulate treble, and the mids can be be pushed right up and it will still sound musical. I much much prefer the 500W Markbass tone over the 800 series of amps. The LM800/MLT800 tend to have seriously deep lows and a peak in the high mids which sounds quite harsh. Not balanced like the LM2/3 or F series. The difference with the 'tube' version of the Markbass amps has virtually no 'tube' characteristics. It is a tiny single tube soldered onto the amp board. The Streamliner has 3 real tubes that you can swap to taste, and it DOES sound like a very clean and crisp tube amp, (and it will grind and distort if you want it to).
16. Absolutely belter! I'll get pics of my Sterling 5 HS Tobacco Burst/Rosewood.
17. Ive heard a few stories about these cutting out. Not good. Hope you get it sorted.
18. My Ray 5 HS can't be anymore than 9lbs. It is strangely light!
19. I have become less interested in buying because Im finding most manufacturers are slipping on QC, and its just not on when its a bass of £1000+.
20. Enjoyed most of it, especially The Civil Wars. Check out their track Barton Hollow. They don't have bass live, so yep, its not a bass discussion....but great duo. Quite enjoyed Janelle Monae, Jessie J and was quite taken back with how good Adele was live....(now the Radio and X Factor totally over play that song).
21. Watched her on Jools last night as part of the 2011 'best of'. Great voice, quirky girl, like it. Adele has a totally stunning voice. I really like her tracks but totally over played which will ruin it....along with X Factor contestants thinking they have a voice like her. Another band on called The Civil Wars....great duo...acoustic folky/blues...like it a lot. Both had really good gritty voices.
22.
I've just bought an RH450 in the long search to have a lightweight head that can replicate the sound I have with my SWR Workingpro with the bass intensifier on and just using the back pickup. Hard and deep to cut through the mix with a keyboard player. After owning and selling an Eden, Markbass LMII and lastly a Genz Shuttle 6.0. (It was pointless investing in lightweight Berg cabs and then lugging round the heavy SWR amp) I'm a fingers groove player. I'm still at the twiddling stage so haven't found "the sound" yet, but the ability to shift the frequency of each EQ pot is pretty clever and being able to save 3 different sounds in mermory is brilliant. So you can adjust the bass EQ pot to centre around a lower frequency to cut or boost. Incidentally I hate the sound of the tube simulator -too much distortion.
Literally have it 'just on'....and it adds a nice hair to the notes. The amp is simultating tubes anyway without the tubetone, so no need to use it if you arent keen.
23. Ah, so the 2010 'pan' on the P bass is effectively a three way switch. But, they put it in a control knob, and it has almost tricked me! To be honest, all I want is a really nice P/J with volume, tone, and a proper pan. The active isn't essential to me although if its good I'd obviously quite like it. I think I'll be sticking with a normal American Standard P until they have another with a PJ + pan. The amount of sweetspots inbetween is crazy...I don't know why they opted to not have a pan! The 2010 Jazz and Jazz 5 Deluxe also look fantastic. My gripe? Well, again, weird version of the classic VVT. Doesn't it have V+Pan+Tone? Is the Pan a three way again? Nice looking basses though.
24. I thought it was a pan? Eg have what blend you like?
