1. V. nice! I particularly like the finish on the Curbow. And a decent collection of pedals would seem to have most sounds covered.
2. Tony Levin as 'Lobot', Lando Calrissians aide.
3.
My 6 month old daughter jammin on my 79 Ray (my two babies)....she's quite a funkateer too
Aw, how sweet is that?! Looks like your daughter is opting for the over-hand fret-tapping technique!
4. The one...
5. Good one. And if you need any extra bass roadies, I'm sure there are a few thousand ready and willing here on Basschat! Enjoy the night!
6. This has also come up before on BC: "Best Practice"
7. I'm not sure what editor they're using for their Myspace but it doesn't render properly in Firefox. The player is pushed further down on the left and half off-screen. Opera does the same thing. That said, things look ok in IE8 and Chrome. Not sure if this will suit, but one simple but effective Myspace editor I've used is "Thomas's Myspace Editor" (http://www.strikefile.com/myspace/). If you know how, you can further manipulate the code or just paste in the code as is to your own Myspace once you're done. One good thing about it is it doesn't push other junk onto your page as well (e.g., ads, etc). (Note: the editor is apparently being re-designed at the moment but is still usable).
8.
I saw the Crusaders at the Victoria Theatre in 1976 with Pops Popwell. One of the best bass gigs I've ever seen.
I used to love the Victoria Theatre (assuming you mean the one opposite Victoria Station! ). I saw Jack Bruce & Friends there (with Billy Cobham, David Sancious, Clem Clempson), also Al Jarreau (with the brill Abe Laboriel), Randy California (ex-Spirit) and a bunch of others.
9. I saw The Crusaders at Hammy Odeon around 1977 and 'Pops' blew me away then. Great gig, although it was Billy Rogers on guitar as opposed to Larry Carlton. (Not that there was anything wrong with Billy Rogers! ) That slap solo is real nice, but I absolutely loved the bass run at 1:23...
10.
A couple of Groupies
Hmmm, knowing the sort of groupies I've encountered in the past, £150 would get you a lot more than a couple...!
11.
Hi, Just got an email from the Mick Karn website....it would appear that he has been diagnosed with Cancer.....devastated....Mick was the reason I picked up Bass 20 odd years ago.....Life is truly a bitch... Matt
Holy moly! I just replied to 'facemans' post regarding an old friend of his who has lung cancer and the next thread notification I get is telling me Mick Karn has cancer. Bad news indeed. Like many here, I've always admired Mick Karn's unique style as both a bassist/musician and also an artist/sculptor. I hope they have caught this in time and he is with us for many years to come.
12.
Presume you don't mean BassChat Marvin?
Funnily enough, I had the same thought. Then I thought, nah, he must mean Hank... Ok, seriously, though - nice track, B5
13.
Translucent turquoise, gold hardware, LED fret markers, wooden knobs and pickup covers, extra strap button for hanging a bag to be sick into...
Er...yeah...not quite...
14. Please sir, could I have both? Flame front, Birdseye back, or vise versa (with a birdseye neck)
15. The new Digitech Jamman Solo compact pedal. Gramma Pad (best £40 I've spent so far this year!) + strings/bass dvd(s)/book(s). 15 bottles of Jack Daniels!
16. Rats! Gigging Saturday, rehearsing Sunday.
17.
Yup When this were all fields and all we had was Rotosounds I used to do this all the time +1 for a touch of vinegar, or lemon if you are posh .. Bung em back on. Fast fret to stop them removing your finger prints (unless required ) and away you go for another few gigs.
Huh! You were lucky! We used to dreeeaaam of Rotosounds! All we had were cheap old Picato strings. And no lemon... Or vinegar...!
18. For weddings and private functions, £350 is definitely on the low side, especially with 7 mouths to feed!
19. An excellent player on both electric and string bass. I've managed to miss the last couple of times he's played in London ( ) but one or two of his concerts pop up on Sky Arts 1 from time to time ( ).
20.
Quick Google for Double Guitar Strap brought this and a few more up. http://www.darestrap.com/
That's the kiddie. One of the guys (Happy Jack, iirc) had a couple of Dare Straps at last years South East Bass Bash. Well worth checking out.
21.
...Alex ( said 4 year old) walked into the room and said " Hey that's that Victor .. Victor Log" .... " Log? " I said " His name is Victor Wooten" .... " Oh that's right !" he said " Victor Wooden" LOL Creased me up!
Victor Wooden! Out of the mouths of babes, eh?!. That's gotta stick! (er...no pun intended )
22.
WOW!!! Darth "Bongo" Vader!!! LOL Here are some piccies of what turned out to be rarer than rocking-horse poo... a VERY early Sterling!!! Production started in 1993 and mine is a '94. And this is my '89 2-eq Stingray, same Trans Red, same birdseye. The Sterling is more aggressive (ceramic magnets), while the Alnico magnets of the 'Ray make it a bit rounder. Both luvvly!! Enjoy!!
That Sterling has a neck to die for! The Ray pics are a lot smaller but both basses look ace.
23. VW came across really well, was a great communicator and obviously a superb musician (not that I needed convincing beforehand!). I loved when, during the Q&A, one of the audience (I think his name was Ayo?) asked VW about certain techniques and was promptly invited ('ordered', even! ) to get up on stage with him. He was immediately handed 'the bass' to then receive a 1-on-1 lesson from the man himself (with 199 other bass players looking on! ). Yikes! I wonder how many had wished they had asked the question instead -- or perhaps were glad they didn't! But the chap -- once he got over the 'shock' -- gave a good account of himself and I thought it was a most memorable part of a great evening. Talking to a couple of the DV guys, and as Caleb announced, I know a lot of work has gone into converting the first floor into a nice performance/demo area and I'll certainly look forward to seeing further events in the future. p.s. - ok, just saw the link to the Hartke_UK thread above (pics of Ayo and VW).
24. Yeah, the black looks really 'mean' and...er...stealthy! I must say I've grown to like the Bongo more and more. Played 2 or 3 including the fretless at Excel a couple or so years back and was sold. Congrats and enjoy!
25.
Hi SS73, I've just 'acquired' the amp & speakers in the picture recently. I bought the 1048 speakers last week on e-bay for £93. My head looks the same as your AH150, which I was given by the guitarist in our band in return for some repair work on his Flying V, so my complete rig cost me just over £100 once I had been to Pontefract to get the 4x10 cab. The head has certainly had to work for a living by the looks of it, as there are cigarette burn marks on the top! I was wondering if you have any more info on the head, such as manuals or even circuit diagrams, as I have been told that there is a problem with mine, but it has always worked fine for me. I wouldn't mind something, just in case. I have looked on the Trace website, but I think this model is a bit old for them and don't seem to publish circuit diagrams. The only manual I found was the AH150 SMC, which is a newer version. Thanks, GrumbleStiltskin
I appreciate these guys are not local to you, but they might be worth contacting. They're a TE 'Authorised Service Centre' for products not under warranty / made before 2005. They were very good when I had problems with my GP12 SMX.
