It took me a little while to adjust when I started playing with drummers using electronic kits. I think what can be a problem (much like bass gear actually) is the amplification and cabinets used to play back the drum audio. Small under powered PA speakers for example are cr@p! especially if they need to be cranked, which compounds the issue. The different drums sounds have less definition and rubbish tweeters add so much shrill top end it's difficult to hear the pulse of the kit.
+1 dood is absolutely right regarding the amps/cabs/etc used. It makes a huge difference. The more expensive kits with all mesh heads and better modules have a far better sound and feel, according to Roland-playing drummers I've worked with. One let-down can be when 'real' kit is mixed with 'electronic kit'. This makes it even harder to get a good balanced sound for both on stage and FOH. It's also even more important that everyone is hearing the drums properly via monitors. In smaller venues you can sometimes get away with a good drum amp or small dedicated drum PA rig that the rest of the band can also hear. There's certainly more to it when going with electronic drums and it's understandable why drummers would rather stick to acoustic kits. But on one particular gig I played a while back, the drummer had a top-of-the-range Roland TD-20 which sounded glorious, especially through a decent PA. And of course, when working with a drummer who just can't hit the drums hard enough, it's easier to bring him down!!
It's not been the same for a long time. I've struggled to overcome it and adapt but I just can't do it. For years I was happy but I have just recently been told that what ever I do or have done, it just won't sound as good as if I had an Ampeg SVT head. I now feel a failure, not only to myself but to all my fans who I have subjected them to the non Ampeg SVT tone. How they will ever forgive me. For years they surely were just listening to the bass as all music lovers do and I have clearly led them up the garden path with an inadequate non Ampeg SVT tone. I think its time now to bow out, ashamed and as a failure as a non Ampeg SVT playing bass player. I just hope others can find the strength to carry on with there rubbish sounding Traces, Ashdowns, Genz Benz, Mark Bass etc amps. Be strong boys, think of Blitey and I'll see you on the other side.
Aye, we're all doooomed, I tell ya!!!

That "Countdown Of The Eighties" Thing Last Night
Stingray5 replied to Hot Tub's topic in General Discussion
Ah, nostalgia - it IS what it used to be! No doubt, some will be saying the same thing in 20 or so years time about the 'noughties' having some pretty good stuff in it. Not like the crap being served up in 2020/2030... -
Hi and welcome to Basschat - even though you are a guitarist! (kidding, I'm a guitarist, too). Instruments and strings usually come down to personal choice so I would just say to make sure the bass is properly set up for the guage of strings you want to use. I'm guessing you might want your low E to be around a .110(?). If that suits, check what's around within your budget and go from there. Yamaha basses are usually very good for mass-produced instruments (I've had a couple) and there's always the old faithful Precision (slightly wider neck than a Jazz bass). For £500, you might even nab a Musicman... if you're lucky, a Stingray, but more possibly the now-discontinued SUB Bass. Check ebay as they do still come up and can go for less than 500. Hope some of the above helps. Steve

One of the nicer P Bass variants out there. (imho).

In a real jazzy mood tonight... L'Image - Love Play can you get 5 more well-respected guys than these...? Mike Mainieri (vib); Warren Bernhardt (keys); David Spinozza (g); Tony Levin (; Steve Gadd(d) This track starts with a real 'smooth groove' and gradually picks up the funk. Nice! Miles Davis - One Phone Call (live) Killer bass line from Daryll Jones

Native Son - Japanese Jazz-Funk band from the late '70s Dr Strut - Struttin' more 70s jazz-funk
Start coat grabbing Cheers lads, I'm quite pleased with it, even if I do say so myself. It's foam lined where it counts, there are two foam padded bars running along the bottom which support the weight of the basses and the mdf rack which keeps them upright. That's also foam lined (actually with that sticky backed draft excluding foam) where the necks rest in each slot. I plan on covering the whole thing with velour or something similar in the very near future.
Haha - excellent! And two thumbs up for your work!

Looks a neat idea but is that bare wood that the basses are being held by? Don't mean to pee on your parade, Dr J, but might there be a slight risk of the odd ding or mark on the necks? Perhaps some sort of protective cushioning (rubber strips, etc.?) glued to the edges of the wood? If I'm on the wrong track here, please excuse me and I'll grab me coat...

Another good thread, Nigel... (you're on a roll, dude! ) I was/still am a fan of The Police and even moreso of Sting's solo work. Right up until his last release, that is - "If On A Winters Night". (Sorry, Gordon, great instrumentation, but that vocal... Oh dear) That's the first time I've had reason to dislike anything Sting has done. But that aside, he has always been a great inspiration on me as a songwriting, singing, guitar playing, bass player! Macca has always had the same effect on me for similar reasons (though Sting is technically the better bassist). Fave Sting songs include: Seven Days, Cowboy Song, I Hung My Head, They Dance Alone, Shape Of My Heart, Hounds Of Winter, When We Dance... oh, sod it - pretty much most of 'em!
Hi Steve Thanks for that, I'll try posting some stuff later on today. I was with Morrissey-Mullen from early 1982 to around August 1983. The support gig I did with them at the Hammersmith Odeon was with Roy Ayers. While I was with them we gigged on an average of 5 to 6 nights a week. We played the Half Moon in Putney every Tuesday- maybe you saw us there? I recorded an album with them called "It's About Time" and Jim Mullen used Hubbard's Cubbard as a backing band for his solo album called "Thumbs Up." After I got back from the Warriors Tour with Numan I returned and gigged with them for another 6-months. After that Jim and Dick wanted a change so that line-up disbanded. Henry Thomas filled in for me while I was with Gary and I think Trevor Barry joined the new line-up. I learned a lot from that gig and Jim and Dick were both great mentors. Peace Joe
Glad you got the YT vids on here ok, Joe. Nice choice of tracks, too. Definitely saw you a few times at The Half Moon (I was living in Brixton at the time). Guess it could've been Trevor Barry (or maybe John McKenzie?) that I saw with Morrissey-Mullen at Hammersmith. (Guess the old memory cells have diminished a little over the years! ). I actually still have "Thumbs Up" on vinyl. Come to that, I also have "Hubbards Cubbard" on vinyl, too (along with "Vanishing Point" on CD). Do you still have your BB1200? Sorry, don't mean to sound like some kind of suck-up but I have very fond memories of those times. Like John Waters' Jazz gigs at The Plough in Stockwell Road (saw guys like Jeff Berlin and Roy Babbington there). Also SFX with Alan Murphy at The Cricketers in Kennington, next to The Oval. Felix Krish on bass. Good times... Steve
Hi Stingray5 Thanks for remembering! Those were the days- I have great memories playing those tracks in LA with Dave Garabaldi, Patches Stewart, Michael Paulo, Kei Agagi and Frank Gambali. One small correction though- the second Hubbard's Cubbard clip is actually called Auspicious Romance. I wanted to post some of my funk and groove influences, but can't figure out how to post a Youtube clip here. The embebded code doesn't seem to work. Assistance needed. Peace Joe
Hi Joe, welcome to Basschat. I also have fond memories of the stuff you did with Morrissey-Mullen having caught a bunch of their gigs way back when. But I know they had a number of different bassists for live so I'm afraid I can't remember which gigs I would have seen where you were on bass. Hammy Odeon supporting Al Jarreau maybe? Youtube posts - under the video on the Youtube page, click where it says 'Share' and the URL line should already be highlighted. All you really need is what comes after the '=' sign. Copy this (Ctrl+C) and then paste it (Ctrl+V) into the Basschat post editor. Example: (youtube)oTXgLPhnChk(/youtube) Note: the words 'youtube' and '/youtube' (including the forward slash) should be wrapped in square brackets: [ ] - not the round brackets. I can't show the proper code example as it will just render the actual video. Preview your post to make sure it all shows up correctly. Hope this all makes sense. Cheers, Steve

GIG REVIEW: Pete Academy & Nearly Dan @ Jazz Café last night
Stingray5 replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Great post, Nigel! Just makes me regret even more that I was unable to make ND's previous gig back in January - and now this latest gig. Oh well, January is only five months away! -
Dear Ros, I've just seen your post and would like to express my sincerest condolences to you personally for your sad loss and say thank you for taking the time to reply to all here. I think it's safe to say Simon will not be forgotten here on Basschat and as you've seen (and already know), he was a very well-respected and valued member of the bass community. I'll also look forward to news of whichever charity you decided to nominate in Si's memory. A tribute gig is a great idea, too! Best wishes to you and your family, Steve (Stingray5)

Musician's Union and The Incorporated Society of Musicians
Stingray5 replied to Dood's topic in General Discussion
I heard about the ISM some years ago but realized it's pretty much geared toward Classical musicians, composers, conductors, etc., though they don't actually identify it as such. They also have a database of orchestral instrument tutors that does include guitar (Classical) and of course double bass but, typically, not bass guitar! <horrors! > There are a few smaller societies and organisations for musicians (e.g. - The Association of British Orchestras (ABO)) but if your area of music is in either rock, folk, jazz, soul, funk, country, blues, etc., then it's gotta be the MU. -

No contest, imho. The tort guard wins hands down. Mind you, I do like tort and/or pearl pickguards anyway.
