Nice Hohner 'The Jack'. I always fancied one of these back in the day but never quite got on with headless basses at the time. Mind you, in respect of strings on a fretless, I have to say I've mainly always used rounds on my various fretlesses (apart from the EUB). I've tried flats in the past but just found the sound a little too 'dull' or 'muffled' for my own taste/style. In fact, at the recent South-East Bass Bash -- to quote @BreadBin -- we both agreed that "...moves should be made to start the Fretless Deviants register for all of us round wound users..."

Great day (again) at the Bass Bash and, as has been said, BIG thanks to @Hamster (and Mrs Hamster), @silverfoxnik, @cetera for their efforts in getting this all together. Great to catch up with old 'chatters(!) and meet some new ones. Also thanks to Matt ( @Wombat ) for letting me try the WL-20 wireless kit. From his previous post, I can confirm it certainly does work with active basses (and here was I thinking I got away with adding any more to my GAS!!) See y'all at the next one!

Not sure if you do fretless (not that it necessarily matters in this case) but here's Jaco at his chilled-out best....

Hi FWB and welcome to Basschat. My BC name might be a bit of a clue as to which 5-string bass I'd personally recommend ( ). Although I do play 4-string and also 6-string basses plus fretless (see my signature pic below), I have to say the SR5 has been my go-to bass for the last 20+ years and does just about everything I need it to do (i.e., Prog/Rock, Jazz/Blues, Soul/Funk, Country). Admittedly, it's a tad weightier than some of the newer 5-er's out there -- and there are certainly a whole bunch to choose from (check out Spector, Lakland, Yamaha to name just three) -- but I guess it's a case of nipping down to your local bass emporium and trying out a few. One thing about 5-strings - it's a bit like bass in general. People may not always notice it, but you sure miss it when it's not there! P.S. - Let's also not forget the option to string a 5'er the other way (i.e., EADGC). For those who want the higher end covered. Hmmm.... 'cat' and 'pigeons'...?!

Quite right! Sam Li worked on a number of Steve Howe's guitars, both electric and acoustic.

Thanks, I just read through the whole thing (thankfully just 2 pages! ) @Mark E Re your question about Sam Li, I can't say I knew him all that well but, as I mentioned in the above thread, I used to run into him occasionally in the Sound City/Music City stores on Shaftesbury Avenue where he did a complete re-finish for me on a tobacco sunburst Gibson EB2-D bass. A very nice man, as I recall.
