It's not 5 string specific, but I think it's still on topic: My band are learning Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy and I've noticed that the original track is tuned down a semi-tone and played in Eb. The bass part though seems to be in concert pitch and played up around frets 4-7 in the same octave as the guitars. As we're playing it all in concert pitch I'm playing it on open strings down an octave from the original bassline. I don't think anyone except for me has noticed that I'm playing it differently.

No. At home I tend to put a bit more bass in my sound. Live I roll it back and use the mids to cut through the mix.

My trusty Korg CA 30 has followed me through most of my bass playing time. I think I've probably changed the battery a couple of times in the past. Has to be the most reliable piece of equipment I've ever owned.

I've had a Zoom H4 for a few years and it's invaluable for capturing rehearsals and live gigs. The controls can be a bit fiddly but well worth putting some time in to get familiar with. It's got a bucket-load of functions that I don't need, so the H2 might have sufficed, but that wasn't around at the time I purchased my H4

I'm upset that these are for guitar only Though I do attribute my ability to pick up a cheap X3 Live on ebay to the announcement of these new pedals to Line 6 - Thanks!!! Played a rehearsal last night with my newly acquired X3 Live straight into the PA and actually got a load of unprompted praise on my sound from my fellow band mates after. *smug*

One band does mainly originals with some covers mixed in, the other band is a covers band.

I GAS'd for a Warwick Thumb for many years before I actually bought my Thumb bolt-on and it was everything I'd wished for. Will take it to my grave and it still gets at least an equal usage to my new custom Shuker.

The Klystron range are the only Ashdown amps that I've liked the sound of. They may look old school but the tone is tight and responsive in comparison to the old ABM amps. Good purchase

I'll give a +1 for Black Beauties as they have adorned my own custom Shuker for the last few months and they're the best string I've ever tried. Pricey though

I have emailed Jon in the last week asking about lessons. He told me that he is from South Benfleet and is currently on tour and unavailable until December 2010, but is taking expressions of interest for when he is back.

I have had to switch off avatars on my forum settings for this reason. I'd suggest anyone worried about this issue does the same.

When I spec'd my bass with Jon I just told him the sort of tone I was after with a few examples and gave me recommendations on the spot. I agree that if you're going to the trouble of engaging the luthier then you should use them for their experience too.

Don't know whether it's because I didn't really come to bass from being a guitar player but I don't naturally barr strings with a single finger across fretts. Playing a one off root-5th-Octave I tend to go index-middle-ring by default.

If you're playing metal and downtuning then it's not uncommon to ask for 1000 Watts from your amp to handle the lows. The only issue is that you'll also have to pair this 1000 Watt amp with a cabinet that can take that kind of thermal power and speaker excursion! Don't forget to factor in the cabinet when you're looking at a rig as you can go quite barmy with Wattage for relatively cheap when looking at amplification, but you'll struggle to find a cheap cabinet to match.

I've been using the I/O button to set loops, and having just read the manual that is correct! Press I/O to set the start point of the loop, then press I/O again at the end point of the loop and it will start looping. The Loop button will make the CD play as normal if you are currently in a loop. You can then either set a new loop section with the I/O button as directed above, or press the Loop button again and it will return to your original loop. Apparently!

I've had experience of Singlecut and headless, just not on the same bass! I think the Singlecut thing is just for looks really. I haven't owned my custom Shuker for long enough to make any judgement on whether it adds to neck stability or not. I haven't owned a headless, but the ones I've tried have felt great for balance on the shoulder and would be a dream to play for those 1 hour+ sets. I do have the same problem initially of trying to compensate for the headstock on a headless and getting my finger positions wrong for the first few minutes Oh, and I have this in my collection of pictures of Jon's work.
