Recommended repairer for effects pedals in South-East/Essex
peted replied to peted's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks Rich, I have sent Martin an email explaining the events which lead up to the fault and asked for an quote for diagnosis. -
My Aphex Bass Xciter pedal went 'pop' last night when I took the output lead out of the front of the amp to plug it into an electric tuner. I was using it as a DI for the PA at the time and thought that by taking out the output lead I wouldn't create any horrible popping noise to go to the PA, but it did. Then found that when I plugged it all back into my amp the pedal was completely silent when switched on. The LED on the pedal still worked and when the effect was switched off I still had signal going through to the amp, but as soon as I switched the effect on it all went silent. Can anyone recommend who I should see to try to get my effects pedal fixed? Would it be the same sort of person as an amp tech, or is it something a bit more specialist? I've taken the guts out of the pedal and can't see any obvious burnt-out components or dry solders.

When I was learning to play in a band the drummer had a terribly sloppy bass drum so I always listened to the hi-hats for timing and have therefore always done the same since. I think the hi-hats and ride also sit very well in the onstage mix, so everything else can be lost in a muddy sludge and the hi-hats and/or ride are always there to be found.

Sounds like a very practical spec which will look great on stage. Look forward to seeing the first pictures

That is a lovely example of a Warwick Thumb. Congratulations

The future of bass?? Infrared light instead of pickups!!
peted replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in Bass Guitars
I got to try out a Bass Surgery bass a few years ago with the Lightwave pickups and it sounded amazing. The bass body was tiny, thin, and very light weight, but the tone which came out of it was thunderous! I think that some of the sound had to be creditted to the EBS combo it was going through but the experience has kept Lightwave pickups in my interest since. A recent visit to the Lightwave website seems to indicate that they don't sell the pickups as separate items to luthiers now they make their own basses. Has anyone else found this to be true? -
I wouldn't design anything by committee, especially on here! You'd end up with a monstrocity. The best person to get feedback from for your ideas would be Jon himself as he's got to build it at the end of the day and has as much experience building basses as anyone on here.
Pete 'PETED' is having a 6 string Fan Fret Singlecut bass built to his specs by Jon Shuker - go have a look at the build thread on this very forum!!
Afternoon Dood Yes, I'm having a Shuker fanned-fret bass made at the moment. My intention was to get a really tight focused B string without having to get string gauges too heavy and a nice top end without the notes sounding choked by the tension. The fanned fretboard looks far more intimidating from the front than it does from looking down on the fretboard from the playing position. I've got a feeling that it's because you're looking right down on top of the frets and your brain is used to interpretting non-parallel lines for perspective. When the bass is finished I'll endevour to take some photos from the playing position so you can see how natural it looks from the top.

The Major's Bass Boot Camp - Session 20
peted replied to Major-Minor's topic in Theory and Technique
Subscribed! I shall be going through these at some point this weekend. I've been working through a book on sight reading and it's just started to go out of 1st position and I'm lost again. I have gone back to the begninning in the hope that I missed something somewhere. -
WOW! That's my idea of a perfect bass. Congratulations.

Aww. Not even a sneaky peek at the specification? Is it using one of his 'off-the-shelf' body shapes or one of your own design?
Pics Pics Pics - [s]in your own time of course [/s]
Corrected. Play the bass in your own time, we demand pictures now!

You should be locked up. Oh, and it's brilliant

I let Jon know that the earliest I'm likely to be able to get back to his workshop will be May and just this morning got an email back saying that May should be fine for a finish date

That bookmatched top is fantastic. Can't wait to see the finished bass.

ACG Finn Singlecut w/ Recurve Mod, 5 string
peted replied to richardcoughlan's topic in Build Diaries
that looks absolutely amazing already. Brilliant spec. -
Very cool indeed. That top grain and stain looks absolutely cracking!

I had the plastic nut on my Precision replaced with a brass one and it doesn't make any difference to sustain (or any other part of the waveform envelope as far as I can tell). I think it's just more hard-wearing and helps with string grounding as mentioned previously.
-
I have my Aphex Bass Xciter which I leave on constantly in front of my amp. My Harkte amp sounds really thin and weedy without it.
-
Very nice indeed. I do like small bodied basses. When I look at it I keep thinking 'Conklin'?
-
Great news! Now put up pictures, or it never happened

I love certain Singlecuts but I've seen some that look hideous. I've got a Shuker Singlecut on the way because Jon does one of the designs I actually like. The Warwick Thumb SC looks borderline acceptable to me but I prefer the original Thumb shape far more. I can't believe the prices they are charging now! The Thumb SC should weigh that much more than a standard thumb as it only has a Bubinga top with an ash body, not the solid Bubinga of it's double cutaway brethren.

Tried out a TC Rebelhead 450 at the Bass Merchant in Colchester this afternoon and was blown away. Got so many sounds out of it with the Tube Tone and the EQ is massive without being too fiddley. Now I'm currently trying to work out how I can live on rice and beans for however long it takes to save up for one of these!
I was considering ordering a second Shuker... but may look further afield now for my next bass...
Woah! I don't want to put people off getting a Shuker built! His basses are amazing and the amount of time it has taken to build my bass is purely an exception. Jon hasn't done fanned frets before and I'm happy that he's taking his time getting it right first time. There have also been other things which have caused a delay. Unfortunately it's very difficult to put across emotion in text and nothing I've written so far has really been a 'rant' as such. I'm still a happy customer Just very excited about getting a new bass to my own specification and I want it NOW!!
Is is going to be a satin varnish or high gloss?
It's going to be a high gloss. That was the first thing to surprise me when I saw it that the finish hadn't yet been 'finished'. I'm guessing that when saying 'the finish is done' meant that the finish has all been sprayed on but still needs to be flattened and polished. My realisation now is that the photo from August looks polished and glossy because the paint is still wet. Silly me Jon had polished the area around the pickups and that looked superb and mirror-like. I think you can make that out in the close-up of the pickups.
