Just practice stretching exercises. Don't worry about tunes too much at first but try and get one finger one fret if you know what I mean. Index on the F, middle on the F sharp, ring on the G and pinky on the G sharp. Once you can clearly sound each of these notes you are well on your way to mastering the long scale. As you say, plenty players with small hands master the long scale bass. They have just strengthened their hands and practised. I bet in a few days you will be back on here telling us about how you are finding it much easier.

I always used to hit a brick wall as soon as I picked up a bass in a shop. I always dreamed of being able to just play an impressive bass line that encompassed the whole neck. Now I don't give a toss. I just noodle to hear how a bass sounds everywhere on the neck that I am likely to visit.

Absolutely no shame in playing these songs. You can be in a hip cover band playing songs folk don't know if you want. See how long the bookings keep coming in.

Soon the scale won't bother you. It's all about practise, practise, practise. I wish I had my teenage years back again to spend more bedroom time practising. That is when you get a good basis for whatever comes next. There are plenty videos online but Scott Devine is one of the best. He has lots of beginner videos and exercises to strengthen your hands and intonate the notes better.

Im not sure mate but it does sound like there may be a problem with your technique. If you strike a note, no other note should sound, even harmonically. Personally, I find myself unconsciously muting with my left hand or even some fingers of my left hand on occasion. Try watching Scott's bass lessons for technique videos. He has loads and I'm sure he will cover this. good luck.

We were a busy gigging band back in the 90's. Everyone in town knew our material. We were booked to play at a birthday party. I think it was a 30th. We played our set to about 40 people, none of whom got up to dance. We kept on and did what we always did, tried to pick dancey tunes rather than ballads etc. It was weeks later, I asked the guitarist, have we been paid for that gig yet? He said oh, I didn't want to tell you but the girl said she wasn't happy that we had done enough to get people up dancing. I hit the roof and he said, I was worried that would be your reaction. I couldn't believe it. We did get the money grudgingly but I was so annoyed that someone could blame us for her rotten party with a bunch of wet blankets for guests.

I agree. I have bought two basses from sellers on this forum and both were very fair and decent to deal with.

With a private sale it's up to the seller to advertise at what they think it's worth. If they over inflate the price they run the risk of getting no interest. If someone is stupid enough to pay the over inflated price then it's their problem and they have been ripped off for not doing decent research. I know its hard sometimes when you sell something as you have sentimental ties to it. others won't have this and look at it as an object which is second hand. No matter what condition, it's second hand.

I'm restricted to what I can use as I get an allergic reaction when I use nickel strings. I found out many years ago that stainless steel was the only strings I could use.

I appreciate that mate but I have just found that I don't like it as much as I did when Heard it on YouTube. It doesn't sound dirty to me, it sounds farty and cheap.

Cheers man, yeah maybe it is me that is not getting the best out of the pick up. I have an Ampeg SVT2Pro, so that contributes to dirtying up the tone. Perhaps an Ampeg valve amp wasn't the best choice for the tone I'm after. I do like a dirty tone but I'd like to be able to go clean when I want. A pedal would be a more sensible choice. Thanks for the heads up with the pups.

Barefaced cabs are immense and weigh as much as a kitten holding a chaffinch!
