Same bass, strings, amp etc. you will try but you ain't gonna sound like him, well, ok, maybe a bit like him, but technique makes a big difference to sound. I'm just happy to get a decent sound that suits me!
2.
Exactly why I didn't say anything. They have no idea if you know what you are talking about, or are just some 'pub expert' who thinks its a case of turning up the treble knob, so I statyed well clear. 9 times out of 10 you are going to get the 'thanks mate, but we are alright' brush off, and that's if they are being polite.
Exactly mate, I can't understand why it's us that have "experts" telling us what to do when we know we have a decent sound yet when we see other bands that maybe have a poor sound, no one is telling them to turn this up or turn this down. I just think it's a cheek. As stated, if it's a poor sound, that's up to the band in question to sort it out. They don't know who I am unless it's another local band. We usually take a walk out front when fully underway which gives you a decent chance to hear what's going on.
3. To be honest, I get cheesed off with so called experts coming up and telling us how to do it. I would never dream of going up to a band and telling them to change settings unless I knew them or they asked me. I remember hearing a local band sound checking and giving them the thumbs up and saying sounds perfect guys The guitarist says oh, I can't hear the keys. So they turned up the keyboard and after that all we could hear was keyboard drowning out everything else I just thought, right, I'm not helping anymore. I thought an opinion from a known musician sitting in the audience would have counted for something
4. It's obviously down to taste in your sound, because I have tried lots of different strings, and find none will last more than two or three gigs before losing brightness. I just love the new string ring. I remember reading about the bass player off of Wet Wet Wet, and he said his strings lasted him 3 hours! I suppose he had the luxury of not having to pay for his own, but unfortunately, I am struck with the same malady!
5.
I'm not sure , I think 1/3 of a pub gig audience usually have a connection to the band
I don't know where you get those figures. We played a bar last weekend and out of about 100 people, I knew about 3 vaguely! Just to add, it was our local
6.
This is almost as good as winning the Nigerian lottery...
I did win some Nigerian money but it hasn't arrived yet, I'm starting to think they've forgotten about me !
7. Still better than one direction!
8.
If I was at Glastonbury I'd DEFINITELY be going to see Kanye. He's the biggest rockstar on the planet.
He certainly is if you listen to what he tells us!
9. I'm disappointed myself as we had tickets for the Murrayfield gig, had booked accommodation , taken holidays etc. but at least I don't have to put up with a poor substitute.
10. Heard that due to Dave having to cancel gigs, that Glastonbury has decided to put Florence and the machine on in their place. Maybe it's because I'm predominantly a rock fan, but I just think this is ridiculous! Sorry to any Florence fans but I don't think she is fit to lace up Dave Grohls broken legged boots! I would, if I was going to Glastonbury this year, be trying hard to avoid both Florence and Kanye! Just my tuppence worth!
11. We've given up playing on mull. Every time we arrived , we were told, oh there's a 21st on at such and such, or oh, Skerryvore are playing at such and such! We just got sick of rubbish nights where the booked us knowing something big was on somewhere else. It's not exactly a double booking, but on an island in the west of Scotland, it's as good as!
12.
What's wrong with a good neck beard?
Now that you mention it, you're right! I stand corrected. Let neck beards be accepted !
13.
Black Berry Smoke are at SummerFest this year I will check them out. blue
Aah, Summerfest, one of the greatest festivals ever. My only gripe was the benches they put out for the bands are great for sitting on during the day when it's quiet, but as it gets busier, people stand on them and even tall people have no chance of seeing the bands if you are too slow to get on a bench! I remember hearing Wolfmother, but didn't even get a glimpse of them and their show is very visual!
14. I absolutely LOVE this band! I love that they can't be pidgeonholed , are they country? Are they rock? Just brilliant! Only thing is, I hate neck beards!
15. I've just had a look at the lyrics and am amazed as I too, have heard this song so many times, but never actually heard what he was singing about. Fact is, it gets played on mainstream radio every day, so if some idiot complains, I would tend to ignore them. It's a great song and if it has a message, all the better. It's not as if its glorifying slavery or rape, is it?
16.
Never heard of Blackstar... is it one of the Behringer brands..?
It's a new brand that Scott Gorham off of Thin Lizzy got made by his mums friend. They come highly recommended!
17. I find when we play, I hear everything clear as hell. As the night goes on, even though nothing is changed, I find everything becomes a wall of noise and I struggle to hear myself or the other instruments clearly. I realise our ears start to filter out certain frequencies and it's probably down to us being too loud at the back line. I've heard some bands play so quiet that they can talk onstage and let the PA do the work, but it's not always so easy when playing smaller venues where you need to hear yourself over the drummist. It's usually our guitarist who is too loud. I agree the best sound is a bass heavy sound, but then again we are biased, ain't we?
18. I blame his up bringing! Obviously has no class. I mean , parcel tape straight onto the box? How common!
19.
We immediately cancelled all our remaining gigs and have since got gigs with other pubs in the town.
Bet that showed him !
20. Yes, I have tried Elixirs. As I said before, the acoustic guitar Elixirs are amazing. Bright and stay bright for ages. The bass strings I find to be dull sounding. Not nearly as bright as stainless!
21. I also heard that pubs were supposed to note down whatever songs were played and send the results to whoever, for the artists to get their cut. Same with cover bands, but obviously, this would be impossible to enforce, so maybe that's a load of tosh!
22. I was just wondering today, after hearing Guns version of word up on the radio, who gets paid when this is played on radio stations? I mean Cameo wrote it and deserve credit via royalties, but, does the band doing the cover version get a cut? Anyone know?
23. I obviously have sweaty, dirt infested slimy paws plus a desire for a bright, fresh twang on my strings, because I can never understand people who say they change strings every 2 or 3 years or even months, or weeks for that matter. I struggle to get more than 3 gigs out of a set of strings, before the lifeless, distorted boominess becomes more than I can handle and I have to change them!
24. And let's not forget Justin Chancellor off of Tool! Another master of the round wound growl with just enough phase to give it flavour!
25.
Funny you should mention A Perfect Circle as I was just coming along to say that Paz Lenchantin's tone on this live Entrance Band beach gig is my current fave bass tone. Just raw roundwound P bass growl. (of course Paz was APC's live bassist and was in the vid for Judith. Think she recorded strings for the albums but not the bass weirdly, as she's a top player. Proper bass player.) http://youtu.be/jS5ZkvZyTM4
http://youtu.be/xTgKRCXybSM How true, Paz haz the ultimate sound ( for me any road) I just adore this song, sound, video !
