With any decent compressor, you shouldn't lose anything that they you don't want to lose. Notes on the low B will usually sound a bit more taut (which is a good thing) and of course your playing generally will sound to be at a more consistent level.

It matters a lot to me - not that I've done that many recordings. Seven years ago we decided to record our NYE gig in order to put together a showreel. One of the songs that featured was Play That Funky Music, especially the guitar solo with me playing an impeccable funk riff beneath it all the way through. Trouble was, I knew damned well that I'd screwed up that riff several times on the night. Sure enough, the BL (who happens to be a pro video editor) had isolated one of the few occasions I'd got it bang on, and then he'd simply treated that as a sample throughout. Despite lots of jocularity and band banter ensuing, I was genuinely whizzed off.

If I'm on a big stage with a decent audience and sound engineers and loads of equipment and a fully-landscaped Gospel group into harmonies and whatever then in-ears probably win. Playing in a 4-piece Grandad-rock band down at the Dog & Duck I'm more inclined to keep it simple.

Moving away from the endless (and predictable) list of famous singing bass players, unless you really believe that you are Geddy Lee or Paul McCartney you're not going to learn much from watching them on YouTube. I take lead vocals on about one song in five with The Junkyard Dogs - the main singer has a much better voice than me and (of course) as a guitarist in a 2-guitar band he can sing far more easily on far more songs. If you're looking for advice on how to do it, start with songs which are Already very familiar to you, things you don't even need to think about, Well within your range, so that you're not stretching yourself too much, Have basslines that are either simple or which you have played so many times that you can repeat on autopilot.
