1.
Rational Funk is the perfect antidote to all the instructional guff floating around on YouTube, got tired of the 'running and gunning' stuff pretty soon though. If you're a drummer, then yes. At some point in almost every video he plays a groove or demonstrates a soloing concept that shows he's pretty handy on the kit. What I enjoy about these are his brutally honest assessments of lots of things relating to the large amount of BS that musicians and the music industry produce - I loved the first minute or so of this...
Agree with you ....having watched instructional videos since the DCI days it's great to see the 0% content con being lampooned. And it's a breath of fresh air to see BIG name players being so down to earth and having a laugh.
2. Life lessons I think ....do yoga with Sting to get the gig...DONT tell him The Police were brilliant but his solo stuff is crap.
3. And the more you watch the more addictive it is. Running and gunning with Ron Miles gets me everytime
4. http://youtu.be/tK-hfpvwivg This is Dave King the drummer out of the jazz trio The Bad Plus and his "educational" site for musicians/drummers. It has to be the FUNNIEST music YouTube channel on the go and a complete breath of fresh air and a reminder that music is supposed to be fun.
5.
From a Leeds point of view wouldn't he be the Duncan McKenzie of bass? - touched by genius but wholly unfulfilled. That's it for me too. I was lucky enough to see him twice with Weather Report and it was one of the most inspiring things as a teenager, music-wise. As I got older and got into other things he'd done I found that there was more of his stuff that didn't do anything for me than did. And I know this will sound irrational (and it's obviously not his fault) but the one thing thing that has detracted from his legacy for me are the clones he spawned - completely cheesed off with seeing players throwing in harmonics for harmonics' sake and playing near the bridge with the bridge p/up on the Jazz honking like a demented duck, with little to no empathy for the music they are supposedly contributing to. It's great to be inspired by someone/thing but to rip it off completely isn't what he'd have wanted his legacy to be, I reckon.
Duncan ? Showing your age there lol !
6.
first time I heard him was the last time I heard him... not my cup of tea whatsoever
Check out his work with Joni Mitchell he really was the Yeboah of bass .
7.
Lordy, she has changed her image!
I still would though.
8. Is that the jazz bass Gilmour gave him on his wedding day ?
9.
I thought that was a Sire! Indeed, he played the fretless MusicMan on Gorée, the track about slavery. For anyone interested, the set list: Hylife B's River Papa Was A Rolling Stone Jean Pierre Gorée Son of Macbeth Encore: Never Too Much snippet Detroit / Tutu / Blast medley Think I noted everything!
Seen him in Cork Saturday and he played Run for cover and a few others .
10.
...and another from Paulo de Sabatino with JG and Peter Erskine. http://youtu.be/lYq3h_kzj4E
Love that album...very musical.
11. Hi all , I have two tickets for Marcus Miller at the Cork Jazz Festival on the 24th of October and sadly now can't get. They are in Row D so pretty close to the stage and they were 70 euros which Google tells me is £51 so if anybody is interested £50 and they are yours. They are advertised elsewhere so first come and all that. Thanks guys.
12. http://youtu.be/nqyqBwHrEOc Wasn't a great version I thought but I think I suffer from weather report over saturation . But I have seen that bass player Dave Carpenter before playing with this band and he was on fire ..great player.
13. I watched my dad die from Emphysema and cardiac problems five months ago .........and I tell you watching Lemmy in that vid brought it all back. The wheezy breathing, the weight loss ,skin colour and the shaking hands it's all there. I hope I'm wrong but he doesn't look a well man.
14. http://youtu.be/CxG-6EvacZg ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO SING AND PLAY THE BASS !!!
15. Hello mate ...another Irishman. Cead mile failte.
16. http://youtu.be/GotQd8pKTGQ I love NHOP....phenomonal player and greatly underrated .
17. We used to do Swords of a thousand men - Tenpole Tudor which always got a great response.
18.
New Markbass rig CMD121P & NY121 arrived today and first impressions are "amazing". Can't believe the depth and mid punch from it with everything set 12 o'clock. Also the filters make a huge difference to the sound. They appear to be extremely well built and solid feel to them. All that and they literally weigh nothing........well not a lot. Looking forward to next rehearsal to give it a full run out. Dave
I have the cmd 121p with the Markbass 15 inch bottom. Powerful !!!. Good luck you won't regret.
19. Find the busiest players in town and take a few lessons with them. They now have your number.
20.
I think it's actually Rick Buckler who has a beef with Paul Weller. Buckler played in "From The Jam" with Bruce Foxton for a time, but seemed to leave around the time that Bruce made his "Back In Room" album, which featured Paul Weller playing on a couple of the tracks(Coincidentally, it's a pretty decent record. Very Jam like, which is more than fine when it's written by one of the members of The Jam in the first place!). Also, I think Bruce played on a couple of tracks on one of Weller's album a few years ago too(Could be wrong mind.).
From reading a few Jam biography books the Buckler axe grinding dates back to The Gift album when Weller had a serious go at him for not being able to play the new material the way he wanted. The seeds were sown .
21. To be fair to Weller he has stated consistently that bands reforming is a bad idea and told Noel Gallagher the same thing. He has also said he has nothing against Rick or Bruce and wishes them all the best and also would not reform the style council either.
22.
Remember well how their debut in 1978 just changed the game. However their recent live album is horrible in every way IMO and I mean really horrible
Couldn't believe how bad.... It is scary bad. Anybody else think EVH'S statement that he doesn't listen to music disconcerting? So many phenomenonal musicians telling us the most important tools are your ears.
23. After listening to most of them I'd say the MTD's and Goodfellow spitfire came across the best.
24. http://youtu.be/yXPM6d9IdiY Hehehehe !
