1. How did I manage to miss this until today? I think I know where I'll be tomorrow lunchtime. Hopefully see you there, be good to try a couple of different cabs as I'm tempted to try a 2x12 with the PJB 500 head. Hmmm, which bass to bring..... Cheers, Rich
2. Cheers, I know what I'm watching tonight after rehearsals!
3. I keep trying to persuade our band to do the FFDP version of Bad Company, they really do some good covers IMHO. Cheers, Rich
4. I caught some of this last night but turned off after a minute of Jools interviewing the band, listening to them butt-kissing each other in a completely fake way was nauseating.
5. As has been said, keep it simple, listen to the others, watch the rhythm guitarist if you can (follow his chords if you get lost!) and enjoy it. You'll be back for the next one with more songs! We started off doing the odd one and are now the house band at a local OM. 14 songs at the next one in a couple of weeks! Cheers, Rich
6.
I have hats very similar to these (In fact I think I own one exactly the same as the second one)... good in the sun, good in the rain, no danger of being regarded as fashionable by anyone...
Me too! Mine is an Australian bushmans hat and it does for all weathers: http://www.bushgear.co.uk/index.php/default/hats-and-headwear.html I don't wear it for gigging though, maybe I should and then stick some corks round it and include "Horse With No Name" in the set. Perfect.
7.
Off topic, but the Hartke bass thing in your signature made me smile. I remember in the late 90's Hartke gave those basses to dealer if they ordered loads of amps.
Maybe so, but once I set it up well and sorted out the wiring problems the low end punch, especially in drop tuning, is so much clearer than, dare I say it, either of my Fenders. It is my "go-to" bass for Get Over It now!
8. Accountants, VC's and the like are a funny bunch. Take a company started by an enthusiast and technical specialist to build excellent products, the best possible, then take it to market. Now expand out and you need capital, then it goes wrong. Decision makers are only looking at spreadsheets, couldn't give a toss about your basswood, pots, magic O2 free copper windings etc. I deal with quite a few London based finance types as part of my engineering consultancy. I'm constantly amazed by how little any of these very wealthy people know about the markets/investments they are looking at from the technical side. They have much more fancy suits than me, and a nicer office, and know more about business finance than I ever will (or want to..) but to them wood is wood, and copper wire is copper wire, and their first phone call after investment is to China!
9. I love "Call Me The Breeze" and do it in the current band. The drummer hates it, he says it is far too repetitive. "why" I sat to him? The bassline can be played with the same 12 bar riff all the way through, but I play at least 4 different basslines as the song progresses, and each time I play it I pick and choose which I play. Second to that for me is Route 66, but again I play a bunch of different riffs as the song moves on otherwise it would be deadly boring. Cheers, Rich
10. Say It Aint So My Name is Jonas Buddy Holly C'mon, gotta love some of their stuff
11. Cheers all, something is clearly wrong. I know the knobs should be obvious, the main volume is but the others not so much. I guess that coupled with the battery issue means it is multimeter time. Hopefully a loose wire, dirt shorting something out etc.
12. I bought a Hartke, an HK-4 I think, 4 string active bass off this very forum a while and but did nothing with it for a while. I recently dug it out to keep in drop D tuning for "Get Over It". It played horribly but I reset it all for neck, intonation, height etc and wow - what a sound. Compared to both my fenders it punches so well and is really clear. My P-bass plays beautifully in standard tuning but in drop D it just booms and sounds completely muddy. I'm a little upset a £60 second hand bass sounds so much better, but there you go. My only questions are that there are 4 knobs, I believe volume, pup balance, bass and treble - but I cannot find a manual anywhere. Any idea which are which on an active bass? Also the battery seemsto only last around 4 hours playing, is this normal for an active bass? Does it matter if you leave the amp lead plugged in? My other question - I'm worried I'm now an active convert, is it time to buy a decent Fender Deluxe Active PJ...? Cheers, Rich
13. Cheers EZ,I had not realised the similarity. Good starting point as you say. Cheers, Rich
14. I agree fully that Roscoe Beck is excellent, but that does not save me from thinking that the Thin Blue Line songs sound so very dated and are instantly forgettable.
15. Yes new band so no previous history. One of the guitarists is obsessed with Robben Ford stuff which I think is durge, but you've got to give and take a bit so I've got to learn it. Cheers, Rich
16. Thanks, UG is usually my first port of call but I'm always worried about songs that are not on there. It usually means no-one wants to play/listen to them so not worth learning! Looks like a weekend spent transcribing it, not something to savour at all I feel. Cheers, Rich
17. I've been asked to learn this song for rehearsal next Tuesday. I'm not into Robben Ford at all and only started listening to the song today. I've got the chords from the guitarist but I'm inexperienced with transcribing and cannot find any tabs or dots for this song anywhere on t'net. Before I lock myself away for 2 days to try and transcribe this I just wanted to ask if anyone else has tabs or dots for it. Cheers in advance, Rich
18. I can't get on with flats at all - they feel "sticky" on my fingers compared to roundwounds and I just don't like that feel. I also prefer the bright tones from rounds, nickel especially, so rounds all the way for me. As said earlier though, just buy a set and try for yourself. It is all a preference thing both in feel and sound. Cheers, Rich
19.
Lyrics are a bit dated now though I suppose, who under 50 would know who Spiro and Ronnie the popular were ?
I just like the up tempo beat even though as you say the lyrics are a little dated. Always a good tune to get people up dancing to.
I was about to say 'Fortunate Son' but I have a feeling it was 'Suzie Q'.
Suzie Q indeed - the scene were the band are playing to the soldiers and they helicopter in the bunny girls. Just found this link, it was Flash Cadillac who played the scene, a good read here if you are interested: http://www.flashcadillac.com/ApocolypseNow.html Now if only I can muster up wonder woman and two playboy bunnies for our next gig I'm sure we will go down a treat! Cheers, Rich
20.
Heres my favourite creedence track, which nobody else ever seems to have heard of.
Well I persuaded my last band to include it in the setlist so not so! We did our bit to spread the word about Jose and his tractor! Great to have a thread on CCR - possibly my favourite band/style ever. Even made it into one of my favourite films - Apocalypse Now - who can name that tune? And was it CCR themselves playing it live? Cheers, Rich
21. I think I need to practice more....... Going to dig the J-bass out for tonights session after watching that though! Great sound.
22. I took about 15 years out, been back at it 3 years now. I dunno about polishing those licks and trying to express myself more, I'm just happy to fudge through a set without messing up
23. B'day coming up in a few weeks, I think I've decided what may be on the wish list! G30 or G50 is looking good as sometimes I don't like the mix we get. At least I can sound check ourselves then. Cheers, Rich
24. C'mon then where do you think R2 listeners will have voted Smoke On The Water and Since You've Been Gone?
25. I've always wondered why wedding bands play "Bad Moon Rising", to me that kind of sends out the wrong signal. May as well play D-I-V-O-R-C-E or under Your Thumb
