GAS? You've come to the right place
-
From what I've read, in the situation where you go from one cab at say 8 ohms to two cabs at 4 ohms this 6dB increase that's been noted is due to +3dB by doubling the power (where in this situation this idealised amp can deliver 100 watts at 8 ohms and 200 watts at 4 ohms) and another +3db by doubling the number of drivers (where you've gone from say two speakers in one cab to four speakers in two cabs). What we're saying therefore, is that doubling the cabs/drivers gives a higher gain in volume (+6dB) than you'd expect by going from 100 to 200 watts (+3dB).

rewiring my bass is this possible?
HowieBass replied to 0175westwood29's topic in Repairs and Technical
It's at this point, wiring resistors into the circuit to replicate the impedance of the control pots, that I start to wonder if it wouldn't make more sense to keep the traditional arrangement and just wind the volume knob all the way back for those times you don't need the neck pickup... -
Well the question here is 'if' in terms of tone. Fender's 10" driver vs the TC's two 8" drivers. You don't need the extra watts for home practice but it's always nice having more power on tap. You'd really need to go and listen to them, side by side if possible, before parting with any cash.

Definitely try fingerstyle just to see whether you enjoy it but also, since it'll be a new technique to master, solo practice will become more interesting. I used a pick when I first started out on bass but when I came back to playing the other year I've been playing exclusively fingerstyle.

rewiring my bass is this possible?

I think removing the volume and tone pots (if you do the straight to jack mod) will change the tone and it'll become much brighter. With conventional wiring the pickups see a load from the pots and that contributes to what you hear. Of course this might be just what you want but I'm pretty sure it won't sound the same as it does now. -
Fender Rumble 40 (V3) might suit. Genz Benz know how inside and owners on here all seem very satisfied with performance. £182 new.

Yeah looking very much like a Harley Benton. Whilst not exactly disguising its origin I think the seller has been rather disingenuous with his description.

If you can't feel the marked areas under the strings then it's probably not worth levelling the fingerboard, but if you're determined to do it then you'd need a radiused sanding block with a variety of different size grit papers and a straight edge. You still get 'mwah' with flatwounds but they will obviously sound different to rounds on a fretless. Some of the sound with a fretless comes from applying vibrato but then some of the sound comes from sliding stops and some is inherent in the string vibrating against the fingerboard. You can use something like linseed oil on a fingerboard which will harden a little after repeated applications. If you want a brighter tone then applying an epoxy coating will do this but it's something you'd need to do in stages, applying coats and then sanding level between coats - I think Jaco used something like 7 coats on his famous Jazz bass... maybe not something to attempt if you're not sure of what to do.

Might be worth checking that extension lead, both plug and socket. I know some power bricks can be so bulky that you struggle to get them securely plugged into a multiway adaptor if they're right next to another plug already in there; though this might not be relevant in your case.

The PSU has worked perfectly every time in other places and has only misbehaved at this one venue - to me that suggests the problem originates in the venue. It may well be that the Harley Benton Junior copes less well than other PSUs when faced with a poor quality mains supply (fluctuating supply voltage, induced RF noise and so on) and if the same problem crops up elsewhere then maybe it'll be time to go shopping...

I think it's because SPL does not follow a linear relationship with power; in other words the speaker is more efficient in the lower power handling range than when it reaches its upper power handing range, so two cabs driving more air at a lower power per speaker has a higher SPL than one cab running at higher power.
-
Yeah I'd also go for wenge in the neck - bags of mids from my Cort B4FL that has a 5-piece wenge/rosewoood laminate neck bolted to a swamp ash body.

If you're looking at this ad, you know all about these.

Who, what, where? With no clues to follow, the mystery continues... -
If the ring main was being overloaded (too much current drawn) then I'd expect the circuit breaker to trip at the fusebox and everything on that circuit would lose power. The sockets you were plugging your mains adaptor into might have been worn inside and there could have been intermittent arcing (the sort of thing that causes fires). Do the pins on the plug look ok or is there any blackening visible?
I didn't know he used old tanners as picks though and thought it amusing that his tech says they're cheaper to buy than plastic ones!
I knew about his use of sixpenny pieces from when Queen first made it big and I always thought the serrated edges would add to his tone, almost a little like a bowing effect (which I believe is what happens with bowed strings and the grab that happens from the bow hair).
Err .....shouldn't we be looking at John Deacon's Rig Rundown?
Can somebody go knock on his front door and ask him to playing again?

"The Ultimate Bass Guitar" according to the seller. I always thought that was the Peavey T40. Please God don't let whoever made this atrocity get their hands on one of those.

Quarter Round Strings - anyone tried these ones?
HowieBass replied to andydye's topic in Accessories and Misc
@andydye - those strings you've linked to are short scale; just in case you were thinking of ordering that set for your Jazz... -
For a very inexpensive pickguard for your P bass but which is decently made, you could try one of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/SCRATCH-PLATE-Pickguard-to-fit-USA-Mex-PRECISION-BASS-P-Bass-in-10-Colours-/191149735203?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&var=&hash=item2c81697d23 from a UK distributor. I got a plate for my Squier Jazz from them.

Aluminium vintage style bridge for Fender?

Joking aside she probably has a personality disorder and if he stays with her it'll always be like that. Sure there'll be a lot of 'chemistry' going on but it's an unhealthy chemistry. He'd be better off without her. You're better off without him. You've moved on; time he did too.

Buzzing when touching pole pieces on Jazz neck pickup
HowieBass replied to Clarky's topic in Repairs and Technical
Whenever anything buzzes like that it's often a grounding issue isn't it? Have you checked that all the ground wires are securely soldered (especially the ground for the neck pup).
