1. The routing is soooo clean and tidy! How's the work progressing on that university project you showed us?
2. If it's the Jive Bass then I think it'll be as good as a decent Squier (think Vintage Modified or maybe Classic Vibe) - review here but the embedded video doesn't work http://www.iguitarmag.com/magazine-editions/guitar-interactive-issue-16/reviews/bass-collection-jive-bass/
3. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it must be for you with mobility issues as I've always been quite lucky in those areas. I had a minor problem with a displaced shoulder (which thinking about it might have been initiated some years previously during my teens when I was attempting to lift something down from a high warehouse shelf) and all I needed was therapeutic massage and doing simple exercises at home to strengthen the ligaments holding the joint. Though the style of music might not be to your taste but have you thought about playing seated on a stool in a jazz combo or are you in so much pain that even that is a non-starter? Hope you get the attention and rehabilitation that you need soon!
4. Aye it's that joker in Annan. We see a lot of comments about his eBay listings on here.
5. Just spotted this on YouTube - great for those of us brought up on Queen and Brian's distinctive style. http://youtu.be/jJ_OamX-PA8
6. The small lightweight Class D heads all seem to feature a headphone output these days and don't need a speaker to be connected which is why they're so popular for both home practice and gigs in just the situations you've described. I think the headphone socket also doubles as the line out and of course these units often have a DI out when you want to put bass through a PA.
7. What other basses are you going to run with the B3? If you have different incoming signal levels and want to swap between basses then you might have to set up parallel patches but with the levels adjusted for whichever bass you want to run. Or just turn the volume down on the G&L. My Zoom B9.1ut is supposed to have an initial input gain set depending on whether you want to run a passive or an active instrument into it but the output from my only passive bass is as hot (if not a little hotter) than my actives so I'm not faced with this problem (yet).
8. It's not a Mazeti is it? They do some slightly unusual looking basses but the few photos I've seen of them they tend to have quite fancy headstock logos.
9. Looking good, I can see why you went with the rosewood for the contrast. Very nice work!
10. For the price and for getting a complete collection of effects all in one box I think they're very handy - you can also create your own patches which are in effect your own custom pedal boards. The amp and cab simulations are often said to be quite convincing and most of the multi-effects units come with a chromatic tuner built in. You'll likely always be able to find a better individual stomp box than the simulated version in the multi-effects unit but you need to be aware that individual quality stomp boxes might well cost as much as the multi-effects unit itself so if you haven't got much spare cash then multi is probably the way to go. Victor Wooten is a notable user of a Boss GT-6B unit so multi-effects are ok for him! The higher spec Zoom units seem to get good reviews from users; I've got the now discontinued Zoom B9.1ut and am very happy with it (it even has a valve in it to warm up the sounds) though you'll only be able to get hold of them secondhand now - I think it put people off owing to the complexity faced by new users when they tried to get to grips with what it can do - it just needs time spent with the manual as most of these things do.
11. You should be ok I think, if the voltage is pretty much matched you just need to make sure the mains adapter can supply enough current; it will never supply more than the combo needs so as long as the unit needs less than 3.42 amps you're not in danger of frying the adapter.
12. THE resource for compressor reviews is the Ovni Labs website - you could spend hours checking out all of the reviews and find out which budget pedals are clones of more expensive originals. The Behringer DC-9 gets a fair review on there. http://www.ovnilab.com/
13. I'd say you stand a better chance of everything working in harmony if you get the cab and amp ratings at least roughly equal; there's less to go wrong IMHO.
14. Have you chosen the fingerboard yet? I'm wondered what maple would look like.
15. I've been lead to believe that the FAQ on the Barefaced Cabs website holds a lot of truth and good advice regarding this topic http://barefacedbass.com/technical-information/mythbusters1.htm
16. You're always better matching the head and cab for power rating. You clearly can't achieve what the cab is rated at if the amp delivers less than the cab can take and though you can have a higher powered amp driving a lower powered cab, that's only ok if you don't intend to ever turn the amp up to maximum volume. Some amp heads are rather optimistically rated anyway. Some manufacturers quote peak music power so the head seems more powerful than somebody else's amp where they quote RMS output levels instead and for some reason valve amps are reputedly louder than solid state amps even when they appear to deliver the same output power (though again it's down to what's being measured and I believe valve amps act a bit like a compressor when driven at full pelt so you get a natural limiting/eveness of volume).
17. Amp heads are rated at different power output levels according to the speaker load presented to it, you can have the same head delivering different output levels to cabs rated at say 16 ohm, or 8 ohm or 4 ohm but the golden rule is never have cabs attached which present LESS than the minimum load in ohms and make sure the cab can take the power delivered. The amp head should have the rating marked on the back and it'll say what the minimum load is. So say a head is rated at 500 watts at 4 ohms, then it'll probably deliver 300 watts at 8 ohms and about 180 watts at 16 ohms - the manual should make it clear. You can have a single 4 ohm cab connected to it and get the full 500 watts output (so the cab must be able to take 500 watts), or a single 8 ohm cab (rated at 300 watts) and get 300 watts output or two 8 ohm cabs (each capable of taking say 300 watts) in parallel which act as a 4 ohm load and get the full 500 watts output (or indeed four 16 ohm cabs, each capable of taking say 130 watts each in parallel which together act as a 4 ohm load and get the full 500 watts out). You can always run a higher rated cab with a lower powered amp head (so cab rated at 500 watts with a head that only delivers 300 watts to that cab is fine) but you should not run a lower power rated cab than the head will output in watts for that cab impedance (so don't run a 500 watt head into a 300 watt 4 ohm cab if the head outputs 500 watts at 4 ohms).
18. I have to keep reminding myself that you're a leftie when I work out what's the back and what's the front of the body
19.
I wouldn't say I've managed to get the action super-low, but it's about 4mm above the 12th fret now, whch is much better than it was before.
The action on most of my basses is closer to 2mm at the 12th fret and I don't get note choking or much fret buzz at all. With every one of my basses they've always come with too much rather than too little relief; it's surprising how flat you can get a neck before fret buzz becomes an issue and then it'll only become apparent near the nut if you've gone too far (too little relief).
20. That's what you get for putting a shorter neck on than the original. Horrible.
21. I'm not well up on what pedals these days sound like the 80s versions but as the TC Corona is toneprint enabled you'd surely come across one that gives you a good sound.
22. I'd say definitely a chorus, probably an octaver as well, a delay pedal too.
23. I like what Julia Rusicka does with Future Of The Left. Self-indulgent 42:28 long YouTube clip follows... http://youtu.be/WXfoTWo4s_w
24. Aguilar is supposed to have a great reputation, I can't see why your existing 112 cab wouldn't work if you're looking for more heft and at least you can audition it without spending any money... it won't ease your GAS of course!
