I don't play it so much at the moment but I still have it

I also used to own a different pair of Ray 35's - honeyburst and black cherryburst And a rare Lavender Pearl Stingray 5 from 1999 iirc

Do Ray 35s count?
-
I now have a pair of these. An older Ray35 with the headstock that says that and a vintage sunburst with a roasted maple neck that says Stingray5 on the headstock. Both excellent basses imo. I've owned a few Stingray 5s in the past and these Ray35s are close enough to make me feel I'm not missing out. What gets me is that the s/h USA prices have pretty much doubled from when I last owned a full fat one. Used Ray 35 prices are do-able but the prices new are a now a bit crazy though.

Harley Benton MV-4M Mustang-like bass. £198. Opinions?
dub_junkie replied to solo4652's topic in Bass Guitars
This looks ace. Think I've just found the colour of the MV J/J jazz bass if I go for one (which is near enough a certainty if my thoughts on the MV P/J are anything to go by) -
My Sabre Classic necks (all gloss and fairly heavily figured)don't really move and seem stable. Conversely, the unfinished MM necks I have had in the past have needed adjusted periodically.

Couldn't agree more. I put flats on it early today and ended up playing it most of the afternoon.

This arrived late this afternoon, bought as a B stock item for £167. Even took the liberty of paying it over 3 months with paypal. Gave it a thorough look over, set up and play and all I can think of is that some of the fret ends were rough. Since fixed that and I have to say I am hugely impressed with this much bass for so little money.

What happened to your J/J five string? Lovely bass btw. I'm hoping to buy the pearl platinum P/J five string as a back up/alternative to my J/J five at some point
-
There. Fixed it for you

What bass is that Mick? Looks fantastic😍

Looks lovely with both plates. I had a 2EQ teal many years ago. Put a status replacement neck on it too. Loved that bass and another one that gives me sellers regret.
-
Love both those basses. Miss my USA Dimension 5. It was up there with a StingRay 5 for just about everything.
-
Was thinking why not swap necks and have a fretted stingray as well as a Sabre to take out with the band. So that's what I've done (for now) Really pleased with how they play. The sunburst and Sledge Sabres had a neck swap at the same time too

You putting the neck humbucker where Musicman has it? I always thought it didn't leave much of a space between the pickup and edge of fingerboard. It was my main criticism of both Bongo HH and HS models I've owned in the past. I always liked the Corvette $$ spacing but guess you're going to have a narrower variation of tone with the pickups closer together.

Teal is a really hard colour to photograph. The green element never really shows. Looks more blue in the pics than it really is
-
Serial number says it was built April 1994. Is like it's time warped forward twenty five years, barely a blemish on it. Band practice cancelled this evening so time to play with new toys instead!

Budget MusicMans (MusicMen?) Ray 35 vs SUB5
dub_junkie replied to StingRayBoy42's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm very taken with my Ray35 which is one of the newer ones with the roasted neck. I've owned a few USA StingRay 5s in the past and of course I'd like another but prices have gone a bit crazy used (double what I used to buy them at) I'm happy with the Ray35. Tonally its spot on and the neck elevates the bass imo. From experience owning four Ray35 basses, I'd say they're worth the extra but that's if you can get one at the lower end of the scale. Reason being, imo the one to get for not much more than SUB/Ray5 s/h is the Ray25 which is based on the Classic two band EQ, slab bodied traditional Stingray shape with the oval pickguard. The pickup and bridge are a big upgrade on the Ray 5. In fact I probably dislike the Ray 5 simply because of the bridge. It doesn't look good imo and I cant get by that no matter how hard I try. Shallow I know but that's how it is for me. Pic of my Ray25 (now sold) and Ray35 -
Will do. I once owned a 2EQ honeyburst StingRay fretless which went to Schnozalee from this parish many moons ago. And have seen yours. Its one of the basses that has fuelled my ongoing fretless StingRay GAS! Will be interesting to see how it stacks up against my USA JB-2 fretless, hopefully both sufficiently different to warrant keeping them both. Have to justify owning them both now by making sure I put (a lot more) time in on the unlined boards.

Couldn't resist it and caved in as soon as I saw it. I've been looking for a combination of these features for a while (teal/ fretless musicman/ old style bridge) Looks to be in great nick for a 30 year old bass.
