1. Just posted on another Hartke thread actually - if you are up for the Hartke aluminium coned cabs then bypass both the 410XL and 115XL and grab a 4.5XL (or two!!) instead. They go lower and louder in the lows than a 115XL (I've compared the two directly) and have the 5" midrange cone in them which is a really nice way to get some top end bite too.
2. I've ran the following with my Kilo with superb results: 1 or 2 4.5XL cabinets (my favourite) 1 or 2 410XL cabinets 2 HX112 hydrive cabinets 2 HX410 cabinets and even a 2.5XL cabinet If you watch your volume you'd have no problem running a bridged Kilo in to a single 4.5XL - it sounds great. But boy are they heavy beasts together!
3. Cheers - Further testing is required but early abuse seems to suggest it will do the job I need, even if it's not strictly 'cab simulation' but more 'top end rolloff'. I'm going to try it with all manner of distortion pedals now!!!
4. Hey all! I'm sure Ive asked this before but I've had a senior moment. I'm looking for some Mac software to test frequency response of audio devices such as preamplifiers and pedals. I don't want to spend a fortune and of course if there are IOS apps that can do the same, they would be fine too as I have the hardware ready. So I guess if it's not in one app specifically I need to be able to inject a signal from a suitable 'generator' then receive the audio in to a spectrum analyser of sorts to read off the results. Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions,
5. I appreciate it won't be right for everyone but I have to say that although it isn't 'perfect' the Micro DI works a treat and I am happy to report that I will continue using it as my solution. There's a really nice low mid bump in the speaker sim and I have to say I think this little box may well suit bassists wanting to plug direct in to a PA as the rounding of the tone is very pleasing through my monitors with a P bass.
6. So, as I'd said above I thought I'd give the Micro DI a go and it arrived about ten minutes ago. I've done nothing but plug just my bass in and ran the pedal straight to my studio monitors. I'm actually really impressed with the clean signal coming out with the cab sim engaged! It's brilliant so far. I like the 20dB boost too as I can see running this chap as a line driver being very useful too (for boosting the output of a pedal to drive a power amplifier as an example) I'm yet to try it with distortion and I will get back to you alter with an update.
7. Sorry Ian, I glossed over your post! I'm duplicating information now!
8. If it's definitely an on/on/on version here's your chap: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-BLACK-ON-ON-ON-DPDT-FLAT-LEVER-GUITAR-OR-BASS-MINI-SWITCH-EP-0080-003-/331217384685?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item4d1e1834ed but there is also just a DPDT switch over version available too! - I 've just bought an on/on/on myself but decided to change from a flat lever pictured to a round end. All parts do them and the part number is EP 4180-003, also in black.
9.
I guess your foam ring has a similar effect to the small jumper I have pushed against the head. I've watched Bob Gatzen's videos and he always seems to use some form of dampening on the kick?
Yes, yes he does - hence my 'somewhere between the..' comment I added. Instead of using dampening in the drum I moved mine to the batter head. I couldn't remember the name of the head but I see that Moos3h mentioned the EMAD head and I believe that's the one! So yes, the foam ring does indeed have the same effect that a jumper does resting up against the head. However I think that there is a train of thought that a rolled up jumper, pillow, blanket or coat has additional 'dampening qualities' inside the drum (As do professional damping products.) My own kit didn't seem to need it but that's by no means an indicator of what is right or wrong, just my experience with this particular kit.
10.
Fair enough to prefer no port, but no dampening?!? Surely a kick drum sounds sh*te with no dampening? I'll have to try this
Hmmm! - My own kit I'd use no dampening inside the bass drum. My tuning was somewhere between the Bob Gatzen method and something a drumming friend showed me. Using Evans heads with the foam dampening ring on I could get a really deep punch but a nice click too by not using a felt beater. On the odd occasion I put a little tape on the res head if it rang a bit too much but careful tuning seem to reward me with compliments over the kit sound. Which is superb, as I'd never say I was a 'proper' drummer!
11.
It's already been mentioned but try and give the Mark Bass Super Booster pedal a go, it has the same 2 filters that Mark Bass amp heads have. I have one, it's the only pedal I use live, and the Vintage loudspeaker emulator is brilliant, you can go from a bright modern to a warm traditional tone in a second and, to my ear at least, it is spot on, it cuts the right frequencies by the right amount (I'm using a TC RH450 amp into a Tecamp 2 x 12 cab with tweeter) but still leaves you with a perfectly usable tone without getting muddy or lost in the mix. Only problem could be that I think they have been discontinued....
I was impressed with those controls on the F1 I used to own (actually I ended up owning three!!) so yes maybe one of these would work well. Thank you.
12. Think I'm gonna take a punt on one actually as I can use a cheapy DI to throw in my kit bag anyway.
13. Save yourself a few pounds and look for the Fender Micro DI on ebay - It's a rebadge of the Mooer and cheaper!
14. I started using Hartke gear well over 15 years ago and have gigged and recorded with it extensively over the years. The only time it ever missed a beat (once) was my fault. That's a lot of shows and gigs!
15.
Something like a Zoom B3 might do the trick, with the combination of amp sims and EQ. The downside is that you might have to spend ages trying out all the combinations.
It would and probably a good idea. It is sadly bigger than the pedal in question and would negate the point of the exercise (which I guess I haven't made too clear, my bad) in that I am looking to turn a big rig sound in to a small pedal board. It's an exercise in back saving!
16.
To totally kill off the tweeter it'd need to be set at the crossover point that's on your cab!! Some are set higher than others, as you probably already know. So your best bet is starting there with your EQ pedal and see if it still brings in the tweeter.
Yup, which is kinda the same as what I had been getting at looking at frequencies response curves of the speaker - however, a more granular detail would be, for example, to model the curve of a speaker that is known to have a pleasing characteristic sound when fed with a distorted signal. the Celestion Vintage 30 comes to mind, or even just an Eminence (delta?) used in Ampeg cabinets. I do agree with you, but I guess I'm not happy with stopping there! I'm naturally curious!
17.
a Torpedo C.A.B simulator in the loop could work too, but they're massive and expensive http://www.two-notes...re/torpedo-cab/ but could have several different settings saved for differing rigs and sounds. total overkill though i imagine. if you find some sort of shelving EQ that can slope the treble off loads after a given point, please let me know
Yeah, I think that is waaay more than I need - my friends are using one for tracking an album at the moment and it's sounding really good. What I am trying to achieve is a way of shrinking down my usual rack set up in to just a few pedals. I'd kinda hoped the B1P would be self contained - I suppose it *is* if you are using an Ampeg fridge with no tweeter - but I like to use other sounds that *do* use a tweeter so being able to control that top end with as few components as possible is going to be my way forward. I think I'll drop Suncoast a mail to discuss it - maybe it is something they have already thought about. Not a deal breaker but it's a pedal that is almost there! Going custom may well be the way - for my own deliberation I've already found some graphic equaliser chips that would be really easy to program a fixed custom slope in to. Just as soon as I've figured out what that slope should be. For that I am going to look at the top end roll off of a number of favoured distortion friendly bass speakers, then copy the rolloff on the frequency response diagrams on to my 30 band graphic. Test, then tweak. It's quick, it's dirty and it's not very scientific, but it may give me some interesting results!
18.
i think the palmer and the mooer would be unsuitable as the speaker emulation rolloffs only happen on the XLR out, so you wouldnt be able to apply them just to the suncoast, where as with something like the custom screaminator above, you could. plus, with a custom option you can tune exactly which frequencies are cut, leaving the low end unaltered. i say going with any sort of killer filter or EQ in the suncoast loop is your best bet, something tiny
I really prefer the idea of being able to customise the slope as one of my problems with a filter is that it's not possible to tailor depending on the rig you are using. It does seem daft running a bass speaker simulator in to a bass speaker cabinet! I'm investigating the EQ route too, but what would be super cool on the B1P is that little emulator button from the Tech 21VT Bass DI!
19. I like the idea of the Palmer, the Mooer Micro Di and the Markbass with the VLE/VPF controls on and I'd especially be up for anything with a small foot print as the reason I got this pedal is to save on space and not have to take the BSP out everywhere.
20.
That'll be you, me and Ant with one with a similar issue. It hates clean top end cabs/PAs. I'm getting the palmer di as it'll solve the PA top end problem, and the DI on my head is knackered. Do markbass not have some sort of pedal that just has the filters on? One is basically an LPF
Yeah, I think that does ring true to the design though as it is a preamp in a pedal box rather than a distortion pedal. Using a guitar amp as a reference you'd get exactly the same effect taking a feed from a guitar amplifier's preamp output. It is heavily treble boosted to compensate the top end roll off of (typically 12") guitar speakers. As we are using a considerably more hifi speaker set up, those boosted trebles need taming. Had the Suncoast been designed as a stand alone pedal, I suspect it would have been 'tuned' to calm that top end a bit.
they used to do the super boost DI with the filters, if you put something like that or the SFX pedal in the loop (which comes after the eq etc and before the limiter) then the roll off should only be in effect with the suncoast engaged
That's a very good point! the filter could be left in an 'always on' state,
21. So that'll be my suncoast we're talking about too then I'll have a think and reply tomorrow!
22. For example, slapping Klusons on a later model without modification.
23. I suppose in some ways it's the opposite of Max's 'Thumpinator'! Thinking forward, maybe a Thumpinator with variable high freq roll off could be just the ticket! You saw it here first!
24. I could probably fashion a 12-24db/oct type filter for the job - but I'm lazy lol!
