    Glad I spotted this thread as I was a bit shocked to see the prices of a USA P bass Tortie guard for my bass. Especially as I'm after a darker brown tort rather than bright red.

    I'm in the process of having a 'new' Precision and am just waiting for some pictures to come through. Quite excited at the prospect of sharing it! There's quite a story to go with the pictures too! (well, for me it's interesting anyway!!)

    oh - P.s. I have two sets of these pickups that are exactly the same, you may end up having either as I store them in the same place. Both out of a stock PJBS and thus exactly the same.

    I will of course mark up the cables. Please note, I would not have trimmed any cables unless it was absolutely necessary to do so in order to remove the hardware. I have also been careful to make sure that the point that I trimmed the wires allows for the most amount of cable left to re-solder. Everything was working perfectly at the time of removal and has been stored very carefully. Not that it needs saying as it's fairly obvious - I can help with reconnecting everything with instructions but I can't be held responsible for stuff 'at your end' and thus no returns.

    I suppose most people go straight for Scott's reason, but there are plenty more. Some bassists are allergic to Nickel and thus use gloves to act as a barrier. I've heard of some who suffer from sticky / clammy hands, for whatever reason and like to use gloves to keep things dry when playing. This is actually quite a wise idea too because if you are playing long, sweaty gigs and digging in way too hard all the time, keeping the fingers dry can go a way to helping the prevention of blisters. I've never tried using gloves so can't comment on experiences personally.

The controls for the preamplifier are: Master Volume TBX Tone Control EQ 'Sweep' Control Three Way Pickup Selector Mini Three Way Mode Selector (includes Bypass Mode) The PJ Pickups themselves look no different from a standard set and the knobs are classic Fender 'F' stamped type. You'll need the picture to get what I mean The preamplifier takes a 9v battery as standard.

    Just to confirm, you say you bought the bass second hand. Was it bought second hand from the company who made it? I'm not clear if that was the case, only that you felt it wise to take the bass back to its origin of manufacture.

    I've been asked if I will split these pickups. Although I'd rather not, the option is there. The FD3a pickups are neck and bridge positions anyway so this would be perfect for a two pickup bass too without the P-Tone.

[/quote] If I told you that, I might have to destroy the evidence ;oP Well, the P-Tone has been crafted to give you a much closer sound to that of a P pickup, which for me is a delight as I really like the added warmth and flavour that a PJ config gives verses JJ.

[/quote] I would say that the SF's are slightly more aggressive and the FD3a's have a bit more bottom. The SF's have a nice peak for cutting through which the FD3a I feel is higher up the frequency scale if that makes sense. To my ear anyway!! Ha! Very unscientific! The FD's could be considered warmer sounding.

[/quote] A flatter radius with a very low action will make string bends less likely to choke off. (If string bending is your thing of course. It is mine. I like a tone up and sometimes if it will go, a minor 3rd, certainly a major 3rd on the low strings)

[/quote] Yup, it occurred to me that I spent more time using the EQ to get the cabinet in the room to sound nice. If only someone had taken care of that so less EQ'ing was required for the actual bass sound.... hmmmmm, now let me see...
