1.
.Attention - Charlie Puth Sounds like it has an octave down effect on it?
To me it sounds like the original is an octave down from the cover, it makes it sound like there's an octave pedal on. Man that Crush song hit me right in the nostalgia from when I used to get a "now that's what I call music" every Christmas as a kid!
  2. Terrible shame, at only 52 too! He was 1 of THE voices in rock, of any generation. Can't imagine what his familys is going through!
  3.
Thanks for the band suggestions, i'll check them out! re. Behance - can you be more specific? Everyone and their mum is on Behance, it's a bit like saying 'Bandcamp'. I'm curious what artists are making a proper living from doing artwork connected to the music scene you're into.
http://www.richeybeckett.com Richey would probably be the 1 I'd start with off the top of my head anyway, certainly the most successful I know of anyway. Also, https://brancastudio.com These guys are tied in with the Doom scene. (Sorry to hijack the conversation!)
  4. It's just the bands that came out of the desert scene that happened in the early 90's in So-Cal, Doom is another style entirely imo. A few favourites of mine;
  5.
I've no idea how anyone who plays an instrument could not understand the sheer fun of writing music, an actual song, that doesn't revolve around how technical anyone in the band is. Writing a song, from scratch, including lyrics, then putting it all together with everyone helping with their own part, is an amazing part of music. It far surpasses any cover work or 'doing it for the money'. Technical proficiency does not make you a good musician. There are many many great bass players in 'indie'....
All sorts of yes, sometimes this view gets a little lost I think!
  6.
No..not necessarily. Someone completely new to bass and learning to play, will not know where to start. All they know is that they want to learn to play. It is up to the teacher to find out what the pupil's goals are and then advise/teach accordingly. This is what I meant earlier when I mentioned the importance of getting a good teacher. It is not enough to be a good player and know your stuff if you don't have the teaching skill. IMO, if a teacher has to ask a pupil what to teach...it's time to look for another teacher.
I agree, after a year or so of lessons I came away with very little understanding of music as a whole. I could play loads of new licks and songs and my playing did improve a lot I still don't think I learnt too much proper info. We'd touched upon modes and the scales but never really how to implement them or what they actually meant to the music, I never knew the questions to ask to get the answers I needed either. I've wanted to search out more lessons for just this reason but I guess my previous experience has put me off a little bit, a shame! Not sure what my point was... haha

    Guitar Porn

Got my first guitar a few weeks ago, wanted 1 for a few years now and after a backdated pay bump at work I thought I'd treat it as a belated birthday present to myself It's an '09 Gibson SG Standard, the dealer who sold it to me told me that it'd had never been played as the guy who brought it originally didn't play guitar and only used it to pose for a few photos as his missus was a photographer. It's been sat under a bed unused and unplayed since, it even came with the pickguard film still on! Took a bit of getting used to coming from a 35" 5 String with 19mm spacing but having a lot of fun with it
  8.
https://en.wikipedia...ettia_laurentii this is Wengé. The Guilbourtia is Bubinga.
Ah, I stand corrected.. must of got my wires crossed. Edited my post!
  9.
I was also at Desertfest! Wo Fat and Truckfighters, loved it. Sleep this year dude are you going?
Gutted I missed Wo Fat! The guys I was with wanted to see Electric Wizard instead, they were awesome like but niggles me that I didn't get to see Wo Fat. Yeah man, ticket & hotel all brought and paid for! Really awesome line-up across the 3 days, just counting down the days!
  10.
Been my obsession for a coupla years mate, seen em twice own all the vinyls etc. Spoke to Nick at the lastest gig in Manchester, really lovely fella and they absolutely killed it. The bass tone on Dead Roots Stirring is my perfect sound, grotty, growly, punchy.
Ah awesome! I caught 'em at Desertfest then again in Coventry last year - blew me away both times!
  11. Actually done this myself about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Wanted a guitar for songwriting at home (heresy I know!) and found a lovely lefty Gibson SG in Scotland on Gumtree, I don't have a car and I'm based in Birmingham so going up there to get it was outta the question. Sent the guy a message, a day later he sent me a load of extra photos I requested and gave me his facebook to message him and stuff. Gut feeling was that the guy was sound but my head was telling me not to go through with it. In the end I gave in to my gut, sent the guy the money and kinda left it up to the universe whether he would do me over or not. He didn't and now I've got a lovely new toy! Wahey! So I guess there are some good eggs out there at least!
  12.
I'm currently in talks with someone about buying a slightly knocked about MiM Jazz, its had active pickups added but I'll probably try and grab a second hand set of original pickups and try those out at some point, I'm fairly handy and can manage a soldering iron to a reasonable standard.
I'd try get that if you can, you can't go wrong with a Fender jazz in a stoner/doom band! Also nice to see another Elder fan roaming these parts too
  13. I'd have a look at Joseph Kaye Guitars, he does a lot of restoration work on vintage guitars. I've not used him myself but follow his stuff on facebook and it looks like very tidy and true to the original spec! He also built Norman Watt-Roy's current bass, so that's gotta be worth something right? http://www.josephkayeguitars.com/
  14.
Its not about skills or songs but effortless on-stage charisma.
But wasn't Entwistle known for having no on-stage charisma at all? So that hardly seem's fair
  15.
actually there was an interview with Oz before the final show and he was very comprehensible, he's been clean for 5 years (fags, booze and drugs) a million miles away for the shambling wreck he was in the Osbournes
Unfortunately haven't seen that interview but when he tried to talk between songs I couldn't understand a single thing... and that's coming from a brummie haha!
  16. I was there both nights in Birmingham and I thought they were awesome. Considering Ozzy is barely comprehensible at the best of times it's pretty amazing he actually got through most of the set but I think I'd have to agree that he's probably on his last legs with his performances. Had a blast both nights though, so money well spent for me!
  17. Personally I think you've shot yourself in the foot leaving it so long without complaining as there's a chance that they won't take responsibility for the damage, so my advice would be to contact them directly about the issue as soon as!
  18.
I remember a shop called City music, which I think is still there, or was last time I walked past that way.
There's no music shops in that area anymore, haven't been for a few years.. it's a sort of pub now!
  19.
I think it's pretty clear. They don't want a heterosexual man.
I thought the whole point of the non-binary thing was that they couldn't tell you what you were? So if you went along to the audition as a bloke and dressed as a bloke but said you were non-binary they'd have to go along with it... or no?
  20.
Anybody who's in London should take a trip to the Black Heart in Camden to see that you don't have to shout "craft beer" from the rooftops or cater for hipsters, just get in some good beer and people will come.
+1 Love The Black Heart, discovered it last year when I went down for Desertfest. Each time I've been down for a gig since we've always made the effort to go about 6 hours early just so we can sit in there and have a couple!
  21. Seem's like a tongue in cheek comment and everyone knows non-jazz people poke fun at jazz it's just the way it is!
  22. Love Mevlis! This is a favourite of mine to listen to when I have an hour to spare! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEqmwYMFKxE
  23. The first 3 numbers are the manufacturers code. 137 is CTS 🙂
  24.
Very right. But when I was growing up my I had access to learn and tried to learn recorder, violin and trumpet. (I failed miserably at them all.) But the chanced of me getting the money together to buy an instrument, other then the recorder, was zero. Today many kids have enough cash passing through their hands to buy a decent instrument AND and amp!! They don't have the drive though. You need to have drive and passion.
A nicer instrument won't neccesarily mean they'll be more interested in it though. What I mean is that if you don't give kids the opportunity you won't know which do and don't have the drive for it. Because some don't doesn't mean we should take the chance from them to at least try and if this £300m gives more children more opportunity to just have a go, have at it!
