Oddly enough, I've heard a few NS basses live and thought they were pretty good To me, they sounded better, and more DB-like than my Stagg.... Anyone have any experience of that Aria?

I'm not really surprised by this either But then, if 90% of kids learned the bass - there'd be too many around, wouldn't there? I wonder what the percentage has been over the years? Similar I guess.....

Sorry to hear your tutor is moving away .... and that this is happening twice! If he is good - stick with him for the moment anyway You can learn a lot in 6 months - it's all good practice anyway, I'd say.... At least you will be more likely to recognise a good tutor, or one that suits your learning by the time you need to find another one (if indeed you do need another)

Hi there, Until recently, I had a Stagg EUB, and it was fine It was a great introduction to the world of DB playing, and I'm glad I took that route. To anyone thinking of trying out a double bass, I'd recommend one Anyhow, I wanted to upgrade to an NS design EUB and recently found there are also several options here What with different models like the NXT and so on But I've also become interested in the Aria SWB Just wondering how it compares with the NS design? The aria looks like it should have more resonant qualities, and therefore, hopefully sound a bit more like an acoustic DB? Especially the later model with the 2 pickups.... What I'm interested in, are the thoughts of you good BC'ers How do they stack up, in terms of sound, and in terms of build quality? The NS design EUB's are very well thought of by many, but what about the Aria's? Also - what about the differences in the NS Design basses? Are the Eastern European built examples that much better than the cheaper range? Cheers all Marc

You're welcome matey One piece of advice that's often mentioned on here is "lock into that bass drum" - so I'm sure that won't take you long I've worked with some really great drummers, and 2 in particular who just seem to produce wonderful drumming, where I can tell exactly where I am in the song - I can almost switch off, and know from the drumming if I've miss counted, or let my mind wander too much (easily done for me!) [/quote] I played a 3 EQ model once, It was someone else's, and at an open-mic night (very kind of the bassist it was too) But I struggled to get the sound I wanted. The owner had a fiddle with the amp settings and seemed to think it was fine However, my EB MM is a 2 EQ, and I get the sounds I want from it without any fiddling / hassle Of course, my amps and cabs are very different from his But I find the sound I want quickly on my 2 EQ As far as build and component quality is concerned - there doesn't seem to be anything between the two

Welcome to BC forum, and the world of bass playing Good on you mate I'm sure everyone on here will tell you, it isn't as simple as some other musicians would have everyone believe Anyhow, as you are a drummer, you will know the importance of timing, and have a good sense of timing so you're halfway there...... Look at some youtube bass lessons, and don't worry about whether or not they are "basic" level Learn those scales, and some hand techniques, and just get in there Most of all, best of luck to you and please let us know how you're getting on Any questions, and I'm sure you'll find the good folk of this forum are more than helpful On with your exciting journey PS. Does this mean you now have 2 reasons to fall out with the lead guitarist?

You must have a good memory, to remember all the basslines I'm amazed you have got straight back in, having not played for 2 years I know I'd forget the tunes lol Glad you're having a great time of it Sometimes, a break can make us appreciate what it is we actually have... [/quote] I don't think it's so much a lack of confidence in the amps It's simply an insurance policy I've played a couple of gigs with a keyboardist, who ended up needing my spare! Also, a situation can change I also played one gig where the PA was playing up, so I went ahead without using the PA, and because I had a spare the keyboardist in that band (different guy) also used my spare OK, I know it might seem like I'm carrying spares for keyboard players but I do like the thought of having something "just in case" and you can fit a small spare head into your kit easily There are some good 2nd hand options out there I'd never do a gig without a spare bass - yet I rarely break a string at a gig.....

[/quote] In my post, I wasn't suggesting that eastern manufacturers produced anything of "less quality" SOME eastern manufacturers do produce lower quality and even shoddy items, and there are plenty of examples of this It's just that sometimes, there can be issues when manufacturing is shifted to another plant -wherever that plant may be situated This can sometimes manifest itself with initial problems and quality issues, that are then (hopefully) ironed out I've long been an admirer of just how good Squier basses are, especially the last few years of production at the Indonesian factory I've recently acquired a Squier CV P bass -made in China and it's stunning - whereas a few years back, I played a china made P bass which was awful I kid you not, my new P bass is absolutely amazing, I love the feel and playability of it and it sounds great too! I was also a fan of some Japan built basses, many years back, when some other people used the awful term "Jap Cr@p" OK, some of it was - but some of it was rather good, and even brilliant! e.g. some of the JV Squier series, and an earlier "Shaftesbury" Ric bass I wish I'd never got rid of.... I really like them. The first 2 albums were great Still play them from time to time - great chillout tracks on both those albums Not sure I've got much by way of advice ... except - play the albums once in a while.... Marc PS> Just wondering what the advice is that you need now?
