1. Interested to see what sound you do end up with and how happy you are with that I'm an old punk rocker myself and still love the music However, when I play DB, I don't try to replicate that sort of sound exactly i prefer to see what I can bring to those sort of songs - but with a DB I've used Innovation Silver Slaps on my last DB Which gave a darker sound, and could also sound a bit more "snappy" when playing more quickly The lower tension meant I could play a bit faster (I don't really slap, like the Psycho guys do) I've got a Stagg EUB, which definitely sounds more "electric" and I would have thought it should be easier to get more of a bass guitar sound with that Possibly by adding an extra pickup (There is a thread somewhere on here, on adding a clicky - but should apply to adding any additional pickups) DeeDee Ramone got his sound by playing downstroke only as did Ramones guitarist Johnny I'm not sure that there's quite a way of replicating this on a DB and would be damned hard work anyway I played in a Ramones trib for a while, and doing it on BG for every song, with few breaks was probably the hardest thing I ever did! It caused tendonitis in my right hand, and especially in my right thumb As I said, I''m interested to hear how you get on with this and please don't appologise - the world of pickups and string combinations on DB is far more intricate than it is for bass guitar..... as I'm discovering Cheers and good luck Marc Hey Ho
2. Looks superb, and a really amazing finish Don't forget to let us know how you get on with it ..... I'd be afraid to take it out of the house - in case of damage
3. Hello Henry, and welcome to the forum Marc
4. I used to own a 100 Rumble, and it was great - really loud for 100W I found it could be OK for smaller pub gigs but medium & larger gigs, it wouldn't be loud enough + had to be miked up... Rather heavy for a 100W amp IMO but solidly built..... Glad you're enjoying it
5.
Maybe the guitarist is playing too much when he is not soloing and so losing too much when he drops it. As for the bass: Have a variant of the bass line for the instrumental section so instead of being empty it just sounds different - in fact instead of being the guitarist soloing, treat it as an instrumental section. If you were playing quarter notes then play eighths, or vice versa. If you were pedalling then walk, or vice versa. If you were walking up then walk down, or vice versa. But space is good. Most of us play more than is necessary.
+ 1 to this reply but as others have said, maybe try an octaver I bought one just last week from a basschat member and used it for the 1st time proper, at rehearsal on Weds although I still need to play with it a bit more I was amazed how well it worked on a few songs.....
6. I really don't know the answer to your question about impedance but I'd get someone who does know to check that issue as dannybuoy says - the crossover will probably still be "working" so that may affect such issues too.... I was actually replying, cos I thought you'd had THE snip and was about to try to offer some words of comfort Hope you sort the amp mate Marc
7. Hmmm, one of the "law suit" types has come up for sale, second-hand, near me They do look good, and I really shouldn't, but I'm tempted cos they're much cheaper than the alternative..... Are they really as good as I've heard people say?
8. What was the description of this "lump of wood" on ebay Beedster? I'm really interested in this project It's the sort of thing I wouldn't mind having a crack at myself......
9. I'm really looking forward to this Yes Spacechick - you better bring that Barefaced cab ..... and what sort of excuse is that - a gig the night before? Lame, I think
10. Great news - lets hope I can keep that date free I'm really looking forward to it.... Never having been to a bass bash before, what's the protocol? Shall I bring a bass, or an amp, or both? Or a double bass? .... or all of the above
11. Yes, it's odd that there should be such differences Plus, of course, you might prefer your P bass with one set of strings while another P bass player might pick up your bass and dislike the sound and playability of the strings Moreover, they may not note such differences.... Perhaps some of it is psychological? You tell yourself that you like certain strings, or that there is a big difference where the difference is actually not as great in reality? Anyhow, keep experimenting with strings Clarky.... .... and I'll have your rejects for a bargain price And let us know how you get on with the pre-stretched strings from your Precision
12. Just wish you were a bit nearer, so I could at least pop around and give it a whirl Looks a fab bass, and I can't believe it hasn't sold Actually, I really shouldn't be looking at buying any more basses so maybe it's a good thing you're far away Have a free bump anyway (even though I'm gonna be jealous of whoever buys this bass)
13.
It's a redundant statement to say all the old Kay/Satellite/Axe/etc basses are crap. Of course they are crap. They are cheap starters and can never be seen as anything else but. However, my mate got a Satellite bass in '79 along with a cereal box sized combo and Bass-balls fuzz pedal, and to us it was the best thing ever. I was far more disappointed with my MIM Mike Dirnt P Bass that was so heavy it was unplayable.
Oddly enough, the first time I ever played a bass (a few years before I started playing) a colleague at that time brought in his Columbus Jazz bass Several years since then, he'd bought a USA Fender, and loved it but he hung on to his Columbus, and reckoned it wasn't too far off the quality of the Fender, once he'd made changes to the electrics I think those early Columbus guitars were made in Japan? But I might be wrong..... Another pal had a Sattelite Les Paul, and he rated that fairly highly, at the time I suppose, like anything else, there is some variation in quality and quality control And you can always do some major work to improve some guitars... Nothing would have improved my old Kay Rick copy.... ..... except some petrol and a match
14.
The shortest lived bass for me was a Burns Bison. With no tone, power and a head that hits the floor, it came out of the box was played for around a minute and returned back to the shop......
Yes, I had forgotten that a few years back, I tried one of these in a guitar shop It looked like it should be good, and was something a bit different However, the balance of this bass was awful As you say, the top of the neck just wanted to hit the floor all the time - and it was quite heavy too.... Also, my arms are fairly long (I'm 6 feet tall) but I struggled to get my left hand into a position where I could comfortably play the bottom notes It left me feeling that someone with shorter arms wouldn't be able to play it at all The switch and control knobs also didn't seem to do very much either Looks good, but not a great bass IMO
15. I bought a Markbass Octaver Pedal from Ryan It looks brand spanking new! Pedal sent really pronto, and well packed He's a pleasure to deal with, and I wouldn't hesitate in dealing with him again
16. I'd be interested too But again, depending on date & location.....
17. Bought a set of Spirocore Weich strings from Clarky The man is as good as his word Deal in confidence folks
18. I meant to add; I wonder how many in the audience of that Beatles tribute would have noticed that the bass player was playing the wrong way around to Paul McCartney?
19. I'm actually left handed..... but play right handed There have been a couple of threads on this subject already and I've been surprised at just how many left handers play right handed guitars & basses I have previously tried to play left-handed fashion .... but failed miserably! I used to see a busker around the streets of Cardiff who had two guitars, one left, and one right handed He used to swap between them mid-song and was a pretty incredible player - with either guitar Good luck with your experiment venture and let us know how you get on Marc
20.
Hi Marc, you could use adjustable legs as fitted to kitchen cabinets. My plan originally was to set the height so that I could keep the end pin on the bass at its ready to play position: unfortunately my studio ceiling is on the low side so that proved tricky.
Yes, it's nice to be able to keep the endpin at its' playing height.... Another good tip, re the adjustable legs I can see you've given this some thought Marc
21. Looks to be in great condition .... and a lovely looking bass it is too I'd be interested to see what others think it's worth.....
22. I find it also varies, depending on the bass Sometimes you can give a neck more relief on one bass, and it seems to work well.... ... on another bass however, a similar amount of relief (difficult to judge whether it is exactly the same) and it doesn't work so well, and you may end up with buzzing etc
23. I'm busy the last weekend of July - and I think the Saturday before that Would really love to get to a local bass bash - so I hope I don't miss this one....
