Nice one - let us know how you get on with it? I have never used one but was waiting in the wings if you didn't take the one of Higgie!!! Cheers Mark
A big thanks for all the great posts on this; just to wrap it up, I went for Higgie’s original Mutron, hopefully coming soon. So now skint AND about to get cadmium poisoning! But vintage cool maintained
A Small Modest Collection For Your Perusal
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Mike Brooks's topic in Gear Gallery
Hi Mike, That is some collection of basses that you have there! I was interested in your Kingfisher Blue GB Rumour - Bernie is building one for me as we speak and I want to go for a black american walnut type front but still have a maple type neck and fingerboard (what is yours BTW?), however Bernie insists that Rumours look better with a dark coloured neck and fingerboard as it works better with the thru neck design. I can see what he means but I like the contrast of dark and light woods like EBS Freak has on his Spitfire. Sounds like you were told roughly the same thing? Yours looks great though!! Cheers Mark
Cheers guys, Funnily enough, Bernie wasn't keen on the 'Kingfisher Blue' with gold hardware combination when I told him what I wanted, really wasn't enamoured with the idea. It was my bass so I wanted it how I explained. I think he conceded defeat once it was built!! Mike
-
Hi, When it comes to envelope filters I would offer the following advise - these are only my thoughts and opinions and not written in stone! EBS Bass IQ - Excellent filter and the best of all that I have owned over the years. Great for getting the funky squelch and never loses the bottom end frequencies either which is really important with filter pedals. Dod FX25 - Hated this pedal, sound was not that funky and when it was used in a live situation the bottom end dropped out completely. I know Flea used one but just no good for me. Maxon AF9 - A pretty good filter but just not quite as funky as the EBS. You can get these 2nd hand for about £70 so probably has the edge price wise on the EBS stuff. EHX Bassballs - Apparently this was designed by the guy that made the Mutron but I could not get a sound like that out of it. Not bad but just not as good as some of the others! Mutron III - This is supposed to be the daddy of all of them and everyone who has one raves about them. I have never played one and would dearly love to own one but the £300 upwards price tag has always put me off. I just cannot justify that on one pedal. Chunk Systems Agent 00 Funk - This sounds great on their website and Bootsy Collins uses one so it must be funky but again this going for £300ish so certainly not a cheap option. Lovetone Meatball - Nick Fyffe used one when he was with Jamiroquai and you can hear it on Live at Montreaux DVD on Blow Your Mind I think and it sounds great. They are not made anymore so the price has gone up but still a good option. Line 6 BassPod XTLive - This did have a good emulation of the Mutron but I found the whole thing so complicated to use that I just went back to stomp boxes! Hope some of this may help you with your decision. If it was me I would take the easy option and go for the EBS Bass IQ. You won't be disappointed. Cheers Mark
Thanks fellas, really useful stuff here. I’d really love Higgie’s Mutron – always prefer the old and authentic option with gear (or as Mrs Shaggy prefers to call it; festering pile of old junk), but hard to justify that amount of dosh – I guess it may be the Pod after all, especially as I’ll no doubt think of some other effect I can’t possibly live without. Hmmmmmmmmm……….
Oh no - you've been bitten by the GB/Bernie Goodfellow bug!! People warned me about this and I paid no attention to them. I now own a KSD Proto-J 5 String, lots of EBS pedals and have a 4 string Rumour on order! You have been warned!!! Cheers Mark
GB Guitars. Bernie is an absolute diamond, luthier supreme and a tasty player too. I've just spent 2 of the most enlightening hours of my life in there and I'm now going to sell everything to get EBS & KSD gear.
Hi, My Warwick did not sell even at that ridiculous price!! Agree that it certainly is the buyers market right now - if anyone is still interested that Thumb is still for sale at somewhere near that price. Thanks Mark
Have a look at this - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=23213 You could probably try starting at around £600 and see what happens, but I’ve seen a really nice 1991 Thumb NT not sell on here for £750 quite recently ( http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=22641 ) so you might be pricing yourself out of a sale if you start asking for a price much higher than £600, and in all honesty, you’d do very well to get £600 for it at the moment considering it’s had the original black hardware swapped out of it for some chrome hardware at some point as well.
Good tip - I just bought a 5 string KSD jazz bass from Bernie and that was my train of thought. A "cheaper" bass for gigs where there could be a risk of damage and save the Rumour, when I finally get it, for better/safer gigs. I also thought that it made sense to have a 5 string as my back up option rather than a 4 string so that at least I have the extended range for the tracks that need it. Having said that re-learning songs on a 5 string has not been a 2 minute job. The string spacing still seems to be catching me out! Mark
I'm out playing 3 or 4 times a week so all my basses see quite a lot of action - as you say, they are defo for playing. For those compact stages and "high risk" gigs, I take my Lakland DJ5. If you are careful, you can keep your basses looking good - it's just those gigs where space is compact and there is a risk of bashing that increases the chances of damage I guess!
Hi, I could be interested in the Korg rack tuner if you decide to sell it. Let me know. Thanks Mark
I've decided I need something bigger, so these are now available. Two 1x12 cabs from Epifani's "Performance Series", US made and from the first run of cabs. Epifani describe them as tuned for a more "classic" tone than the UL Series, they deliver thick lows with a musically crisp edge and I'd agree with that. They are small and light but sound big and handle a low B with ease.

12" 300 Watt Eminence Steel Magnet Driver
1" Compression Tweeter
17 Ply Baltic Birch Cabinet - dado joint construction
High impact locking corners
Steel reinforced "Comfort Feel" strap handle
1/4" phono & Speakon inputs
18 gauge radiused steel grill
Frequency Response: 45Hz - 16 KHz
Sensitivity 98db 1W1M
Dimensions: 16.5" H x 19.5" W x 16.5" D
Weight: 36lbs
Pricing them is difficult. They're £320 new in The Gallery, and mine are in very good condition and only lightly gigged. One has had the driver replaced with a 500 watt Eminence Delta LF replacement when the original failed recently and the blue "Performance" labels have come off, but otherwise they are in great shape. £500 for the pair has a nice ring to it. I won't ship them, so buyers will need to collect or I will meet you halfway if you are a distance aways. PS: The amp and rack tuner may or may not be for sale in due course as well, depending on whether I like the GB Shuttle
Rack mounted tuners for 5 String bass
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Repairs and Technical
Not yet but will do if you think that it will work? Mark
have you tried hitting the 12th fret harmonic?
-
My Behringer BTR2000 rack mounted tuner does not seem to like the low B on my 5 string bass it just does not register at all when I pluck the string. Has anyone else encountered this problem? The tuner works fine on the standard EADG strings. Help!!!1 MJB

GB "Gabbie" Rumour 5 by Bernie Goodfellow
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to EBS_freak's topic in Gear Gallery
BASTARD!!!!!! I want mine now. Bernie is building my Rumour as we speak (as you already now from past conversations) - thought that your Spitfire was the dogs but now I am not sure which one is better. How does it play? Sure is a work of art and a credit to both you and Bernie! Love it , love it , love it! SWAPPED - Musicman Stingray 2EQ (Pending collection)
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Machines's topic in Basses For Sale
I wish that was true! I have a Warwick Thumb 4 string 1991 NT and I can guarantee you that the Warwick decline is everywhere! Go to the Bass Gallery in London and ask what the would give you in part exchange - they won't even take it. Don't know why this has happened as they are great basses and worth s stack more than they are currently selling for hence the reason I still have mine!!! Mark
the only place Ive seen evidence of a warwick decline is on this forum
-
Have to do The Gallery! Great gear, great guys and great prices if you know what you are looking for. My wife "enjoyed" half a day in The Gallery whilst I tried every amp and cab combination in the shop before settling on my current set up! Mark
glad i am not the only one to that did that .my wife was in fits at the bass centre site ,and the gallery saga was the icing on the cake . weird sense of humour women have so next visit to london ,the gallery is top of the list
FEELER: For sale Aguilar AG500SC amp
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Might be sensible to try the GB with the Aguilar before I make the change then!! Thanks for your thoughts guys. Mark
+1 I tried the AG500 at the same time I bought the DB750 and it was a very close call, other than on price and weight!! I use a GBIV through my DB750 for nearly every gig and can vouch for the fact that GB and Aguilar do sound great together, if that's any help to you. However, I'm not really into this thing of certain basses sounding better with certain amps. It's all down to personal taste, string choice and EQ settings at the end of the day. And, as someone else has already said, it's your rig so go with whatever you like! Good luck!
-
As a fellow Warwick owner I would like to see you get £750 for this bass but sadly do not think that that is likely. I tried shifting my 1991 Thumb 4 string NT recently and only got up to £700 on the 'bay. Just could not let it go for that low. I would second the comment that if you can hold on to it for a while then I would as Warwick's are sure to come back into fashion again at some point. Once upon a time they used to be THE bass to have! Mark
That's a good point Kev. I paid about £800 for it including shipping etc. Not interested in trying to make a profit. I'd ideally like say £750 for it.
FEELER: For sale Aguilar AG500SC amp
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Guys, Interesting to hear different opinions on this topic! I am using a 2x10 Epifani cab and the music that I play is jazz/funk so I like quite a tight finger style sound with lots of mid and bottom end and also have quite a few tunes with slap bass in it so that is why I like the zing of the EBS and GB basses. Last time I was at Bernie's we even put the KSD 5 string through the EBS 2x10 combo and that sounded great for a sub £750 bass! The advice that I seem to hear repeated is that your bass sound is only as good as your weakest link and I am not sure that the Aguilar can be classed as the weakest link at all as it is a cracking amp. It may just be that the EBS suits the sound that I am after more!
+1 Kev. To be honest, GB works wells with EBS - it's a well proven setup. I would like to know the criteria on which "Epifani cab are worlds better than the EBS ones". Nobody has mentioned speaker sizes, style of music or anything. It's all about getting what you like and what is appropriate for what you do.
-

Not tried an Epfiani amp yet. You don't rate EBS amps then? Mark
Keep the Epifani cabs, they're worlds better than the EBS ones, and sell the Aguilar and buy an Epifani head, there was a used one for sale here a week or two ago.
-
FEELER: For sale Aguilar AG500SC amp
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Hi, No doubt that it does sound good but the EBS head just has a certain "brightness" than I think other amps struggle to achieve. I have a Rumour bass that should be ready in Nov and just thinking that EBS, GB Rumour and Epifani cab may make a great combination! Mark
IMO Keep the Aguilar. Aggie + Epifani sounds very nice to me.
-
Seriously thinking about changing my Aguilar amphead for an EBS HD350. Interested in a swap if a fellow BC'er has one and wants to do a deal. If not I may sell if I can get the EBS amp for not much more money - funds are tight at the moment! Would also welcome thoughts from other members as to if I should make this change at all? I love my Epifani cabs and will not change them for EBS but last time I was down at Bernie's I have to admit that the EBS stuff sounded awesome! Cheers Mark

FOR SALE 1991 Warwick Thumb Bass NT 4 string
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Basses For Sale
Looks like she stays as is then!
No mods on mine at all, stock MEC pups, original 2-band MEC circuit. I wouldn't want to mess with the sound. I agree with the other comments about pre-'92 Thumbs. They are the best basses Warwick ever made - these are the basses that made their reputation after all - and I'll never shift mine. Except maybe to replace it with a 5 from the same year.
-
Ken Smith Designs KSD 704 Proto-J TRADED
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to rockinbassman's topic in Basses For Sale
+ 1 on that. The EBS pre-amp alone is £150 fitted. That £480 price would be the conversion from US $ but then you would have to pay over 20% on top of that in customs and import duty. This is a great bass.
If you speak to Bernie Goodfellow who is the UK Distributor for these bases, he sells them new for around £700. With upgraded pre, you are looking at £700 or more.
-
Marlborough Jazz Festival was on last weekend and after we played I went and checked out some other bands and there were some really good ones. Highlight of the day was a band called Protect The Beat. My understanding is that these guys are all top session musicians and boy could they play! Their music is instrumental jazz/funk and it really grooves. The bassist on Saturday was Roger Inniss but I think he was a dep. Played Shuker basses and was awesome. If you get a chance - go and see them play. I guarantee you wont be disappointed.
