I'm on a similar path as yourself right now, except I'm being even fussier, I want a vintage 60s style P neck, wide and shallow, but with a compound radius, a modern bridge, modern/better access to the higher frets, as well as a vintage sound, in a rather fetching Sunderland AFC red! I promise I'm not too demanding! 😂 My search has taken me to custom built for sure!
Just realised that we have the same bass in our avatars, I remember our previous chat about it
My old Lull P4 had a great neck, wide 60's style nut with a gorgeous shallow depth so to my taste was easily the nicest wide nut bass I've owned. Plus Lull's have the high end access and modern bridge. Only sold it to get a PJ4, but that's in blooming Chelsea blue rather than Gooner red.
Don't ask me why, or what proof I have, for there is none.
Exhibit A... the Fender Nocaster
Did indeed, I had bought it on here from Si - 0353203 We could have met up and cut out the middleman!
True! The middle man for me via Andy Baxter was my good pal Mark. Nice that I can now trace this back to Si, who I presume imported it from the US. Well, it ain't going anywhere now Cheers pal
I was the previous owner of that '66P - funny old game!
And you're right around the corner from me! Did you sell it via Andy Baxter?

Cosmic....or....coincidence? I just bought this bass back, 2 years after I foolishly sold it. It's a 66 P Bass. For the past 6-8 weeks I thought about this bass non stop, even talking to mates about it and teasing myself with old pictures of it. I've had many 50-60's Fender basses, this is the only one I REALLY wanted back. Then on Sunday, I see it listed for sale here on BC. The rest is history, and here it is now in my home, to stay.... Warren nailed it in the post above. I just had a great time meeting Andy, enjoying his company and conversation and then purchasing a lovely bass. Everything about this deal has been a pleasure since we started chatting 4 days ago. Andy, thanks again pal and I'll look forward to seeing you again in the future.

** Sold ** 59 P-bass (refin otherwise original)
Chiliwailer replied to Andy's topic in Basses For Sale
I just played this bass today and words will never do it justice. It's simply the best, or at the very least joint best, pre CBS P bass I've ever played (and anyone who knows me knows that's a fair few ) The neck is divine - perfect, but most importantly the tone is super solid and everything you'd ever want from a killer vintage P. This bass is worth every praise. Andy, think twice my friend -
No, not yet mate. Wednesday hopefully 🤞
Let's hope Thursday is a sunny day, then you can do a family gathering photo shoot
Sadly it sits in it's case as I I'm used to 5's now. It's still not for sale though for sentimental reasons ]
Good call

£25 including delivery. Great budget effects unit/amp sim, I used it for playing at home on the couch using headphones. Has been reset to factory settings. These didn't come with a power supply but they take a standard 9 volt one or 4x AA batteries. My rechargeable Duracells lasted quite a while in it. Manual can be found here https://www.zoom-na.com/sites/default/files/products/downloads/pdfs/E_B1_B1X.pdf Cheers
But you surely can't know that the QC is great, only that the build quality of that particular specimen is great. For every one great one, they might be shipping out 20 crap ones.
I wasn't saying that they are all great, just that i was pleasantly surprised that my cheap model came out the box really good, considering that when friends have gone in to shops to spend big bucks they have played bad examples. It was just a light hearted comment

New Spitfire Pickguard on my 64 Precision..!
Chiliwailer replied to chrisanthony1211's topic in General Discussion
Looks really amazing Chris, nice variant choice too I'm sure you have already, but just in case..... is that original guard screwed into some wood right now? They can shrink very, very quickly indeed. -
If Gibson actually just stepped up to QC as good as Musicman and PRS, they'd sell a lot more instruments anyway. I've recently played a lot more guitar and I am astonished at some of the guitar forum posts about poor workmanship on £2k Les Pauls. I want a nice classic tone of a Les Paul but I am not risking buying one.
I've heard alot of that too and trust the players that have told me. The irony is that I just picked up a cheap Gibson USA 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker model and the QC on that one is great. Go figure...
Thread hijack alert.... can someone please tell me why some of the early Fender basses get checking on the finish whereas others don't?
The pre 68 Fenders have a nitro lacquer top coat whereas the post 68 ones are poly. Nitro is prone to crack, sometimes just lightly but the poly ones often really crack when they do, which is rarer. With both, the differences between instruments is mostly dependent on the environmental conditions that it's lived and been played in. Best one I ever saw for being uniquely mashed up belonged to a guy who played in a beach band in Hawaii, the band left their equipment on the beach by the stage when they weren’t playing, including his pre CBS bass, looked amazing and wind/sand swept.

Grangur - the serial on a '74 would have been on the neck plate, and those anodised pickguards were phased out around '59. So...what he means by original is that it's an original one of a kind
