I've never played a 3eq Ray that I could make a sound I liked on.
I'd maybe agree with you sat in a shop at low vols. But for some reason it comes alive in a gig (especially through Mark Bass Rich!). In a gig I just use the mid to tweak - it's easier than farting about with the VLE/VLF thing At home I usually find the Ray far too sharp for my ears with D'Addario's and reach for the GnL or P bass.

Nice one Nig, wish my 5er was a pound (and a half) lighter. But, musn't grumble What options/features did you take with it?
The question here really is whether an extra mid control is worth £150!! Possibly not? As Hamster states, you will probably be putting it through a graphic or other tone controls anyway! For what its worth, the secondhand values of Stingrays don't appear to be greatly affected by the 2/3 tone control options, so maybe thats the route to go down? Its a great time to buy at the moment too,so good luck.
Wot he said. You should get a good one either 2 or 3 eq for £550-600.

Lakland Darryl Jones 4 Black/Black/Maple

Had both. Had a 2 eq for 16 years - sold it. Perfectly acceptable sound. Now have a 3eq - don't really touch the mid much. Sounds just as good as the 2eq to my ears.

My Lakland Skyline Decade - First Sighting
martthebass replied to EssentialTension's topic in Gear Gallery
Very nice Dave, well worth the wait. Thought I'd got rid of any Lakland GAS. -
I started to suffer quite badly from the middle of this year - as it's in just the one ear I think it was infection related but who knows. I can live with the tinnitus but the 'crosstalk' really p1sses me off. BB - Elacin ER20's can be had for less than a tenner, you hardly notice them and it cuts post gig ringing down to negligable - YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE!

adding preamp to passive warwick corvette
martthebass replied to project_c's topic in Repairs and Technical
I had a Corvette standard active a couple of years back (ash) and TBH it had plenty of growl in passive mode. I rarely used it active as the sound got a bit too harsh - I mainly used it for a bit of vol gain on some songs in the set -
Pre-EB Musicman Stingray owners - string question

Musicman Bass = Slinkies! -
the newer musicman's (musicmen?) have the waxy kinda finish to them, which i aint that keen on as i find it makes the neck kinda sticky. i think you'd be lookin at late eighties/early nineties for a gloss finished neck?
The late 80's/early 90's necks weren't gloss finished IIRC. Mine was satin finished but after about 10 years wear it was pretty glossy. The finish was very similar to the headstock lacquer on the current basses.

I would've thought that US instruments would be on the 'up' again now that the £/$ is in the toilet? Glad I hung on to my Ray instead of letting it go for a daft price.........would still like a Modulus tho
if it helps my stingray is 1.67 wide against 1.5 on a jazz [well actually an osbourne, ] and 1.75 on a p bass.
Depends on the Precision. My MIA P (2004) feels pretty much the same as my 2005 Ray - 1.625". The 'old P's were 1.75" (Fenderheads will give you more exact info) My 1990 Ray (now departed) felt slightly chunkier but that was lacquered as opposed to oil finished. Not sure about the age of yours - 80's? (My 1990 didn't have the skunk stripe - i.e. like the current neck).

My 702 posts don't seem to have enabled this 'essential' feature......

Rich, I'm another one for not worrying about thru body. My G&L and Std US - I've had strung both ways and really can't tell any difference. To be honest, the only reason I go thru on the G&L de rigour is to put less stress on the bridge screws. And FWIW the MM Ray has a thicker sound than either if dialled in PS....if I had the cash I'd go Sad. The only reason I don't have one is because I'd have to sell all mine to buy one.
Yeh - it was one of those, "oh wow" moments. I've always like the idea of a 5 string, but never found one that I actually wanted to play. The 2500, though, was not only nice to play it's nicer then anything else I've played with any number of strings. The sound is quite something too, although I still can't quite remember what all those damn switches do
Hell, I know exactly what you mean - half the time I don't know if it's active or not I can only just about ''operate' a Precision! Must admit tho, the attention to detail on the US made is awesome. Quarter sawn offset cut necks, best neck-body join I've ever seen and blemish free finish. I'd put it a notch above MM and Lakky Skyline (and 2 above US Fender) in this regard - can't understand why they aren't more popular.

While ever there's music like that SKY will have no problem finding backing for the 'search channels' page........
I recently acquired a Tribute L2500 from one of the guys here and I'm a total convert it's brilliant, even if not the "real thing".
Not so sure there's that much 'sonic' difference between the Tribby and 'proper' L2500. I love the US 2500 I just got from a fellow BC'er; I had a good go on a US and a Tribby recently and 'eyes closed' couldn't tell the difference.
