1. This.And only this.My dream bass.Slab Precision.
2. I'm quite er rotund, but I usually wear black trousers and my favourite Basschat shirt,in black,of course.
3. My first bass was a Rosetti Lucky 7 with one pickup u/s.I plugged it into a little Gibson open backed combo of about 15 watts. My 2nd bass was a slightly updated Rosetti Lucky 7.I also remember plugging ALL our amps into 1 mains socket by means of removing the plugs off 2 of them and stuffing the bare wires into a socket and then plugging in the 3rd amp to the same socket, usually a little 5 amp one.Hey it worked! Young and foolish or what?
4. Very interesting thread. My problems stem from being too close to a PA speaker when a very drunk and overenthusiastic blues harp player blew too much and my hearing suffered.I now have a weird sound in my right ear but more importantly my general hearing has gone downhill of late.I notice that a lot of you seem to suffer from poor lower frequency response.I'm the opposite. Its as if someone has turned the 'treble' off.So while my hearing is not too bad,but not great,volume-wise,my treble response is dire.I often find that while watching TV,if I 'cup' my ears with my hands,it improves things. I'm 65,and after playing in various bands since age 15 without ear protection, ever,(I was one of the 'earplugs are for wusses' brigade) it's only to be expected. If only I'd taken more care.
5. Proud Mary Bad Moon rising Whisky in the Jar (Lizzy version) Sultans Money for Nothing I saw Her Standing There Copperhead Road Not all at the one gig I hasten to add.
6. It isn't a question of whether the song is good or bad,in fact I liked it when it came out.Its just that I thought that the bass line was a little unusual, and by that I mean that it didn't conform to the standard of the bass notes more or less matching the chords being played. Some of you think it sounds fine,I dont.I find that the bassline jars in the chorus.I find it unpleasant to listen to.Just wanted to hear what you guys thought.
7. Just been listening to Barbara Dickson's 'January,February'.Is it just me or does the bass player have his own idea of what sounds right,as opposed to what sounds "trendy"? In the chorus of the song, the bassline takes on a decidedly 'dischordant' quality. It's as if he's not sure of the chords, and is trying in vain to find the right notes.I haven't heard this song in a long time but it struck me as odd.Was this par for the course,or better yet, acceptable, back in the 80s? Or is it just me?..... https://www.youtube....h?v=iW0C_zSVnPM
8.
If that's fat, I'm in trouble.
Me too!
9. Try touching each pole piece on the pickup with a metallic object eg small srewdriver with the bass plugged in and amp volume pretty pow but audible. You will get a distintive 'thump' at each polepiece.Does the 'A' thump sound quieter than the other 3?If so,the pickup is at fault.
10. This.Heard them on BBC Alba last week.Nice combination of instruments along with a Rickenbacker for good measure.Darlingside. https://www.youtube....h?v=VbA0GykPCOE
11.
Big Area - Then Jerico Labour of Love - Hue & Cry
I wouldn't class Hue & Cry as a 1 hit wonder.Remember 'Ordinary Angel','Looking for Linda','Violently' etc?
12. A mineful of information on here Mototech.Welcome from another Nordie
13. Wow I thought that thread title was 'Well hung Bassists'.Phew, that was close.
14.
there's a few songs about w***ing that people don't get, Teenage Kicks is another
The first was 'Pictures of Lily' by the Who.
15. '3 Times a Lady'.A popular '1st waltz' request at weddings.Surely its a break-up song? "But now that we've come to the end of our rainbow" and "Thanks for the times that you gave to me,the memories are all in my mind" Likewise ""Best of my Love" by the Eagles.Strange choices.Just goes to show, people dont listen to song lyrics often enough. They just hear one line and think 'Ah that'll do for my wedding'
16. Jools is not good at that sort of thing. All this "Are you ready to hear such-and-such.I said......"As if somebody is gonna shout "Naw,hold on a minute Jools.I cant find ma glasses". Old hat.Still,it was live, which cant be bad. Some sweet soul music getting done, but who were the 2 rappers or whatever they were, and why were they there?
17. Beverley Knight and Sir Tom were the only ones there that showed any signs of life. Its good to see the old timers again but Jools baby, presenting ain't your thang.Amateurish at best. The finale was a fiasco.Who were the 2 rappers?
18.
Just listened on headphones... great rendition... but can't get past the autotune.
Really?Cant say as I'd noticed it.Any particular section where it's noticeable?
19. At weddings at some point our singer will say to the crowd,"We'd just like to take a couple of minutes to introduce ourselves",at which point we all proceed to shake hands with each other.Always gets a laugh.
20. I remember a covers band here in N.Ireland back in the 60s who used to preface each song with "This next song is an imitation of the recording of (song name) by(artist's name) every single time.
21. Ever do a song and get 1 person clap and then stop very quickly when he realises hes the only one? Our response to that is "Thank you for the clap!"
22. When we do 'I saw her standing there',I always shout the count-in "One,two, three,F**k" at the top of my voice.Dont know if anyone's noticed yet.
23. Have a listen to this guy,if you've not already heard of him.Him and his bassist do acoustic covers of nearly everything. He has one of the best voices I've heard in years. This is a great cover of Toto's 'Africa' https://www.youtube....h?v=MLrC7e3vSv8
24.
Which model is that? The one with jazz pickups? The only ones I can find for sale are the VM5s, they say in the specs that it is a 47.6mm neck.
Thats the one. With the Jazz pups.I know I only used an everyday 5m tape measure, and in fact I've just checked again and the nut is definitely 50mm exactly, and not slightly over as I stated previously.
25. My Squier P5 is just slightly over 50mm at the nut and string spacing at the bridge is 20mm,but dont take that as exact as I'm only using a flexible tape measure. But the nut is definitely over 50mm.
