1. As mentioned above all they have to do is replace the singer and rebrand by changing the band name. Otherwise a change of career - McDonalds are always looking for staff.
2. gramma pad? http://www.thomann.de/gb/auralex_acoustics_gramma.htm
3. yep. With my previous band I had a dean pace first & then upgraded to an NS CR5M. We had a rock/americana sound & the electric upright fitted in well. The pace was a lot easier to play than the NS.
4. do you currently have something hassle-free to record your gigs & rehearsals? if not add 30 quid and get a zoom h1
5. Pots = potentiometers & are the business bits you can't see attached to the knobs on the other side of the control plate. The ones in squiers tend to be piddly little cheapos, so it would be an improvement to get a set of CTS pots - might as well chuck in a new capacitor & a switchcraft jack at the same time. btw: Instead of attacking the body with a chisel, putting a shim in the neck pocket would have given your the adjustment you need.
6. Isn't the 'offset contour body' part of the decal in the wrong place? Also wouldn't a real '66 have lollipop/oval tuners?
7. Don't Markbass amps already have a built-in low pass filter that does the same job as a thumpinator? I'm almost certain I heard that somewhere.
8. I practice at home, but the band gets together to rehearse once a week in a little studio in Croydon. Anyone using rehearsal time to practice gets a Paddington Bear hard stare from one or more of the other band members.
9. Martin Petersen once told me that its best not to and you shouldn't need to cut strings to length. But what does he know! I bet he's not tried string an ashbory recently.
10. I sold a white 4 string epiphone thunderbird and a peavey 5-string to buy a natural epi thunderbird pro-v with some cash left over for bits & bobs. I explained to the missus carefully that I was selling two basses to get one with some of the attributes of the two I was offloading. When the new t-bird turned up I still got the usual 'new bass' hassle from her, so I don't know what the answer is.
11. Any top tips for bass players? I have one: A neoprene 13" laptop slipcase from poundland is just right for a Zoom B3 so it doesn't get knocked & scratched when carried in a gigbag.
12. I have Thomastik TI JF324s on my CIJ mustang. It sounds more like my precisons than any of my other no P-pickuped basses probably due to the split pickup. Lots of punch, maybe slightly darker in its tone than my 1990 MIJ precision with JF344s. If you like light low tension flexible flatwounds that feel and sound wonderful, JF324s are ideal for the mustang.
13. Anyone near Newark, Nottinghamshire? Junkyard Rocket are making the trip up from London to play the festival next Sunday at 4pm (8/9/13) at the Roaring Meg pub (117 Barnby Gate NG24 1QZ) at the unusual time of 4pm. Its free entry even if you don't have a festival ticket, so if you're in the area, why not come along & say hello.
14.
maybe the Affinity Jazz is the worlds second best selling bass and that may fit your needs
Nope - I have a Squier CV Jaguar short scale which is now one of my regular gigging basses, but I've never felt the need to get an affinity.
15. Even the mighty Fender are prone to spouting marketing BS
It feels good, sounds good and fits the needs of any player on a budget.
I'm on a budget but it doesn't fit my needs.
16.
Wired my EMG for 18V instead of 9V. I was convinced that it would change my world.. Sadly there was no obvious difference apart from the rubbish rout at the back.
That made a massive difference to the 80s EMG I have in my '81 precision. With 18v it has load of punch that was previously lacking with 9v which always sounded squashed. I wonder whether this means that the modern ones work better with 9v than the early ones did.
17. it's the only way possible to string a mustang and a toploading bridge would mean that I couldn't use Thomastik TI324s on mine as they're meant for a 32" scale, but the bass has a 30" scale. Its my favourite bass sound ever, but I like my bass to sound like a bass not a harpsichord. No sign of the strings being killed yet, but them I've only had them on the bass since I bought it five or six years ago
18. The aged finishes really don't look much different to the ones done by numpties on youtube
19. Looks like an early 70s one like mine with 'tulip' shaped tuners. The original weedy 6-pole pickup was the same as originally fitted to mustang guitars - like a strat pickup but only half as tall. The tone can be much improved by replacing with a Kent Armstrong (or similar) strat-sized enclosed cool rails humbucker.
20. Anyone using or have tried American DJ LED Profile panel LED lights. I need to get something a bit better than the crappy maplin 'lightbulbs in a fuzzy box' I currently have. Thinking of a pair of these, either on the floor or mounted on stands would do the job - £160ish for the pair, compact & lightweight - should be easy to get a case/box to store/carry them in. http://www.americand...ItemNumber=1931 Has anyone here used these or able to offer some opinion? Or is there anything fairly inexpensive (under £200) and easy to store/transport that might be better suited for pub gigs?
21. I had something similar when I first bought my CIJ mustang when they could be picked up for £300 secondhand. As soon as I got it home I took off the roundwounds & put on a set of thomastik JF-324 flats, which are just as light & floppy as my favourite long scale 344s. I did as a good a setup as I could, but there was awful fret buzz around 7-9th frets which made the bass fairly unplayable. It seemed that this was due to the lighter strings being unable to pull any relief into the neck. I took it to the Gallery & the diagnosis was that the frets needed to be levelled. A fews days later I picked it up and it was perfect - no buzz or choked notes at all. The frets were leveled, crowned & the edges smoothed, and surprisingly there was now the ideal amount of relief in the neck.
22. These things are pointless & idiotic - I won't play a venue with them if we are using our own backline. The last time I encountered one was in a function room at a council-run theatre / arts centre where it triggered before any amps were plugged in, but the drummer was fiddling with his snaredrum. Without being asked, the tech there provided an extension cable plugged into a socket in the kitchen for us to plug into instead.
