Other half?

Well, I know one thing: It'll weigh a bloody ton. I wouldn't like to have to stand up with that attached to my shoulder.

Aww crap, that means we're fast approaching the terrible two's, what woe will befall the members of the good ship BC during that time, one has to wonder.

No-one's 100% sure really if it makes a that much of a difference. Most people for sounds, it's the electronics that really make the difference. I personally reckon that it's down to the resonate frequencies of all the woods on the bass, but the finger board does also affect the stiffness (ergo stability) of the neck. Seeing as the strings have contact points on the nut, frets and bridge, two of those are directly related to the fingerboard material, while the other is related to the mass of the bridge and the wood it's screwed into. The vibrations of the string will carry the whole length of the body, and end up affecting itself as the wood subtly changes the vibration. But, unless you've got two completely identical basses (so, same tree(s) for all the woods used in both basses, same batch for parts, exactly the same windings on the pups, same wire length etc), it's probably the electrics and strings used having more of an effect than anything else, even though the other materials will have a subtle effect.

That Yngwie Malmsteen quote should rear it's head in this thread. However, the player does have chops.

Thanks by the way ferret, I know you've been working on the wiki, and hopefully I speak for a few members when I say it's appreciated.

Interesting idea, a bass one would probably have to be slightly larger due to the extra weight. I also wonder what it would do to your straplock screw holes, and if it fits around the different sized nubbins for Dunlop, Schaller etc...

Talk to them about how you're not happy, if you reach the decision that you should leave, at least you arn't dropping them in it, and you can help find a new bassist for the band and still get gigs in the meantime (until they find a new bassist and get him/her up to scratch). At least then the split shouldn't have any bad mojo behind it. But if you're not happy with actually performing that stuff, don't stick, you'll just end up resenting it.

No-ones mentioned them yet, but Status Hotwires! Wooo! They come in round (hex core - standard for most strings), round (round core), half wound (which are rounds with hex cores, but shaved off, they feel like flats, sound and play like rounds, sodding excellent), and their flatwounds. I've got a set of half wound 45-105 on my VMJ, me likey.

Do some people let the funky music do the talking as they don't speak French? /Coat was already being worn, said occupant is now out of the door as well.
Top row on the screen, button called 'Search'. Answers a surprising amount of questions. In short, people have been pleased with their SX purchases from Rondo.
+1 really. There's even a small SX club, but be careful touching them, rumours are they've all got the lergy Main culprits are all in the SX thread in the Bass Porn section.

I like funk to a degree, I won't actively seek it out (well, I will for learning and skill purposes this summer), but I do also concur with your statement that it's a bit odd how every bassist is expected to love it. Then again, it's probably due to the basslines having a much greater place in the music compared to other mainstream forms, in the sense they don't just do rhythm or follow the guitar, they're well....funky. Then again, it's expected that everyone who has an electric guitar is a selfish prat wannabe rock god who'll solo without the slightest prevocation.

Will a pack of tissues come with it to help staunch the flow of tears when people realise they'll never be able to do some of his lines and so shatter their dreams? -
On the mention of 80's, I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but: Kajagoogoo - Too shy.

Urgently need a few quick and easy songs

Breakin' The Law - Judas Priest. It's easy on the bass front anyway, and it shouldn't be too hard for the guitarist. -
Ooooh, a fellow Midlander, bostin' ! :waves:

An SX maybe for around £150? If not, arn't the Harley Benton ones meant to be alright? Wooo, I beat the SX crowd!
Well, thank you to all who replied. I'm certainly getting the consistent message that the thing to do is upgrade the amp when I need to. I'll need help and guidance to do so, so look out for my cry for help in the near future. I'm not sure I fully understand the difference between an amp and a combo. Can somebody advise?
Essentially a rig is made up of the Amplifier and the Speaker Cabinet (aka cab). The amp is also known as the "head", it's the electrical box of wonders that the instrument plugs into, and has knobs on (it contains a pre-amp and a poweramp). A cab is a box, with a speaker(s) in. Cabs and heads are seperate units, with cabling linking the two. A combo is ONE unit which combines both the amp and speakers in one packager, and your practice amp is a good example of a combo. Lots more information here: http://wiki.basschat.co.uk/ Amp is often used as generic term to describe what makes sound, whether it be a combo or a head, but it also can refer to just the head. As a note, generally the more powerful the rig is, the less chance of it being a combo, generally due to portability, powerful combos can be very heavy (there are exceptions but they cost more). Er, I think that's it.
-
If there's no problems with the bass which makes you really want to get rid of it, then save and get a new combo or branch out for head/cab options, which'll you need if you want to start gigging really.
