Hi folks Some of you know that in November my wife and I had a little boy called Frederick. I'm happy to report that he's a proper music fan - he really listens and chills right out when there's something playing. I'm a bit worried he'll become a drummer like his uncle so I've started him on a fairly rigorous series of bass lessons before sending him off to study with @devinebass for a few years (whenever you're ready Scott) I have my mini 16" bass for him to play with when he can sit up properly. Should make one fret per finger easier, too. Today was lesson 1 - basic familiarisation. Bearing in mind he'll one day inherit Basschat, you should all be very nice to him. ped

I don’t know if I was clear enough regarding noise - my B1on is noiseless when you’re not playing (after some careful tweaking and with amp sims off) but there’s digital noise when playing, ‘behind’ the sound, and noticeable especially when notes decay.

When you’re ‘in’ an effect do the physical knobs adjust the parameters of it?

Pics updated. Worth mentioning that for about £100 you can get the internal pickup kit so there’s no extra cables and bit attached to the bass. It’s called the GK-kit-BG I have two basses with them in. And don’t forget that even without a GK bass, it’s a superb quality studio pre-amp, multi fx and do it all audio interface.

Lol yeah maybe. It was an iRig 2 and iPad. Shame because it could have been quite handy

I found some latency on the iRig

Weirdly I haven’t ever been affected by the death of a musician I’ve liked. Or is that weird? I don’t know... I liked a lot of Michael Jackson’s music but his death didn’t worry me as I didn’t know him. Same with Walter Becker. Maybe it’s because although I love their music I don’t necessarily love them - I’ve never met most of them and even if I did my interest in them starts and ends with their music. I don’t know if that makes me cold or something but I always think it’s strange when there’s a national mourning when someone like Witney Houston dies and all of a sudden everyone loves her music. Obviously it’s sad when anyone dies so don’t get me wrong, but unless they’re family of a friend then it just seems too abstract to me.

I don’t think he meant it literally

For reasons I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I really dislike practice amps and using amps at home. They rattle everything. They seldom sound much good at low volume. You can hear the acoustic sound of your bass over the amplified sound. People can hear you. A headphone solution is amazing. You can also get the perfect mix in your cans for playing along with music.

Great piece of kit - as 2pods says I’m happy to help answer any Qs. I’m in York if you’d like to check one out that’s all set up and configured. I can even give you a little tutorial! Whether you have a GK pickup in your bass or not, you’ll find this a superb unit. I don’t know if Roland will ever do something like it again.

Yes the looper and drum machine are so easy to use. It’s really great - editing patches is a bit fiddly but I don’t mind the trade off and once they’re set you don’t need to fiddle too often.

I must admit I haven't ever really used a pick but like the sound of them. I have started trying it a bit more, using a Dunlop Nylon .88 which fits me best from the selection pack I bought.

Yeah very! I've missed out on a couple but the one I really wanted was a carbon necked Passion guitar going for silly money a few years ago. I just don't think I'm ready to plunge into guitar playing for financial and time limiting reasons!

Yeah it seems to be the amp models that cause it mostly, in terms of 'noise' - but even without those, so everything is quiet, there's some digital artefact noise. It's a bit like there's a very subtle noise gate going on. Like I said though I still think it's fantastic for such a tiny and cheap unit and it's only really noticeable as I'm looking for a perfect HiFi sound, but it's frustrating there's not something better with the same portability and batt power. Hoping the B1 Four is that thing!

Wow!!! LOVE the Arpege guitar, too. I'd probably go as far as learning the guitar if I could find one.

I only ever use it with headphones and mostly playing solo so it may not be noticeable for some people, and maybe not through a rig - but I do tend to be hyper critical of small details like that when using cans. I find any noise really distracting... but I have the B1on mostly tamed to my liking now. I expected much less for £20, so it's fine - but I definitely wouldn't be happy if I found the same with amore expensive pedal/headphone unit.

I only ever use the B1on with batteries. There's a fair amount of noise/fizz unless you tame it by turning off any amp/cab models. I have spent ages getting the quietest patch possible which is the Avalon DI model and some reverb. Even so, there's some digital noise when you hear a note decay. Not much, but it's there. Hardly worth bothering about but annoying when you notice it, and a bit annoying that you can't use many of the models because of it. For the price and size I still think it's excellent and worthy of a spot in my travel bass gig bag.
