1. If they are demanding a T-bird, they are probably not after a 'bright crunchy' sound tbh. How about making some cardboard wings to fit over your Jaydee?
2.
Larry, barry and gary? That would confuse the hell out of me
Didn't know which way to run Luckily the baby-faced solo singer bore the brunt of it...
3. Bill Maynard turned up to a few gigs many years ago. I spent half an hour chatting backstage with Dave Edmunds slagging off some highly talented 'balloon dancers' that were also on the bill - wish I'd have known who he was at the time Larry Grayson - who was spending the weekend with his friends Barry & Gary (luckily I wasn't the target for their drunken affections that night!)
4. I learn the original bass line, especially any signature licks. But then being in a covers trio we have to fill in for the 20 missing guitar overdubs, lack of brass section, etc. You can't always play it as original. There again, once you've gigged a song a few times you'll realise it's become faster and twice as heavy as the original was
5. I played trombone in a Big Band for a few years ... er... probably not much help to you
6. When I asked for a nice tight backline...
7. I've just bought a Squier P/J bass. I've fancied trying out a P/J for some time, and that was a nice price for an experiment. Having got the bass last Friday, I gave it a bit of a tweak on Saturday morning. I managed to get the action nice & low and gigged it that night - New Year's Eve. It needed another tweak to the pups at the first break but ... it sounded MASSIVE. I've been really enjoying playing my thunderbird recently, but am now torn. The Squier feels and sounds great, and the workmanship and finish is excellent. It's one heck of a bass for the money! The stock pups sounded very good - the P pup had a heck of a punch, the J added a nice growl and the tone control is excellent. On most basses you lose the tone when you wind the control right down, but this had balls by the bucketload. It's definately coming with me to the next gig!
8. I just bought a Squier P-bass special from Sagawa. Good communications and the bass arrived in excellent condition, only delayed slightly by Christmas postage. He's a good chap to deal with. By the way, the bass sounds massive - I gigged it on New Year's Eve

11.
I think in pub-covers-land, think a window of couple of weeks either-side of the date is reasonable. Anything more than that is stretching it a bit.
^This^
12. Hmmm. There's a '65 strat on there for the bargain price of £4K
13. That's rather good
14. [sub]A couple of years ago our Pink Floyd tribute (since folded) was auditioning for a second guitarist.I've never had much experience of auditions, having always played with people I know. Some of the shower that turned up though, like:[/sub]

[sub]Guitarist that didn't play a note throughout, but stood there staring in awe of the rest of the band[/sub]
[sub]Guitarist that brought along a rig that could've filled a stadium - a rack of about 12U of flashing lights[/sub]
[sub]Guitarist that turned up with a wedge monitor as his backline (no pod or effects)[/sub]
[sub]Guitarist that brought along a home made guitar that was probably his lad's school project[/sub]
[sub]Plus about a dozen uber-twiddlers, very keen to show how fast they were, but hadn't bothered to learn the songs[/sub]
[sub]Then eventually the guitarist that got the job left about 2 months later to go to university. I'm kind of glad the keyboard player eventually got fed up and jacked the whole band in, after rehearsing for 3 years without a single gig![/sub]
15. A wedding do, out in the sticks near Kegworth. Strange time of year / day of week to get married, but hey. It wasn't the worst wedding I've ever played at, but certainly not the best. Ever had one of those gigs where you have little enthusiasm, feel tired, and then with about 1/2 hour to go your bass seems to weigh a ton, your fingers seem slow, and you stand there smiling at the happy couple wishing they would all hurry up and sod off to bed? Yep. That was the gig. The funny thing though was the guitarist forgetting to bring his decent clothes. He realised about 20 minutes before we were due to start, with an hour's round trip to go and get them and no-one available to bring them over. He ended up playing in borrowed clothes - the drummer's shirt and waistcoat (apparently some people still wear those!), and my black jeans which were a couple of sizes too small for him. And the best bit? I'm sitting here at work having had a whole 4 hour's sleep - and that hurts when you're the wrong side of 40!
16. That looks a beast! Interesting that two necks have different scales. What sizes are they?
17. T-bird love thread? Count me in I really must update my avatar - that Jazz hasn't been out of the case in 2 years
18.
I'm afraid I dont' recollect who owned it but there was a Ric with black everything that I deeply coveted.
This one? Linked from Cerberus Vent's for-trade post? Hadn't noticed it much (Down GAS, down!)
19.
maybe you play harder in the second set?
This ... Adrenaline
20. Keep them in the warmer room to avoid any issues with condensation, especially if you have high humidity. High humidity isn't an issue unless it starts condensing - which is more likely to happen in the colder room. Keep them in their cases & if they are going to be there some time get hold of some of those packs of crystals that absorb water & put one in each case.
21. Thunderbird - favourite bass & play it almost exclusively US Jazz - owned from new & played it for about 5 years. One day I might need to do a gig that the Tbird is not suitable for Mexican Jazz - it's fretless, cheap and actually very nice to play (I need to practise more on it though) Aria SB-1000 - was my only bass for over 10 years and is currently being restored for sentimental reasons I think it would take another 2 basses to complete the collection - a Rickenbacker & a P bass Edit: ... and I don't take a spare bass with me to gigs, but ALWAYS a spare set of strings
22. "How do you leave a band quietly ?" ... Switch your amp off Seriously, say you've other commitments so need to quit. Hang around long enough to get your replacement up to speed, then go join a band you enjoy playing with. If it's not your main job, you probably aren't earning enough to put up with any crap - you've got to be in it for the pleasure.
23. There do seem to be a lot less venues to play as each year passes. The few remaining pubs that have live music in my area still pull a few in, but more and more pubs can't afford a band any more. I was talking to the landlord of one place a couple of days ago, who was hoping we might get minimum alchohol prices like Scotland are introducing. His opinion was that booze from supermarkets is so cheap that no-one goes out any more. I suppose you'll always get your hard-core live music fans who will still go out of their way to see bands, but your average Joe Public won't - not when he can sit at home watching X Factor & drinking beer a fraction of pub prices.
24. You could also try moving your cab backwards/forwards a bit to change the distance from the back wall.
25. Is this a common theme - bass players who are ex-trombonists? <Puts hand up too>
