Poor quality video but three great songs played (not live) on the Oxford Roadshow (remember that?) in 1981

Jeez, terribly sad. A unique fretless bass voice. I will always remember him standing front stage playing Visions of China on the Tin Drum tour nearly 30 years ago. RIP.

Fretless vintage white CIJ Jazz in lovely condition
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in Basses For Sale
Looked around a bit myself too. Found this: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?p=9072526 Seems the CIJs have both Alder and Basswood versions - and there are other differences (p/ups, bridge) - at least for the model year the guy on this thread is talking about. Don't suppose you can tell from the other spec differences mentioned on this thread? Is the model number evident anywhere? Do you know what a 'spiral' bridge is - and can you tell if p/ups are US?
The first FS thread for this bass is shown below (showing the old s/p I replaced). Cardinaljay sold the bass to bythesea who sold it to me. In cardinaljay's FS post he stated that its alder, US vintage pickups etc. Short of me pulling the bass apart, which I will not do after a bad recent experience (I did this for a sale of a 51P and damaged the bass, leading to me having to take a cut on the price ), I don't think I can do more than suggest contacting the previous owners. To be honest, even if I looked in the neck cavity I'm not smart enough to tell the difference between alder and basswood. Apologies http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=cardinaljay Edit: having looked at the (now sadly defunct) Guitar Emporium website http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/index.php?...guitars&a=3 the standard basswood-bodied 62J fretted bass has standard J tuners while only the alder bodied 62J fretted has reverse tuners. The 62J fretless they list has alder body and reverse tuners. My bass also has reverse tuners and so this supports cardinaljay's statement that it too is alder, US pickups etc. Thats the best bit of detective work I can do, although I realise it doesn't amount to 100% proof. Incidentally Guitar Emporium was selling this model fretless for £949 at the time it ceased trading. -
Is the body Alder on these - or something more nondescript? Also, do you know the weight? cheers, JC
After scanning the internet, a couple of sources including this one say the 62 fretless has an alder body: http://www.gear-review.co.uk/reviews/jb62_77/index.html Weight on digital scales comes in at 9.7 lbs with covers on -

Hi, I bought this only a couple of months ago but am struggling with the J width neck - a possible fretless P may be heading my way so I am putting this up for sale to help pay for it. Its a CIJ 1962 reissue in a creamy vintage white with both chrome covers and is in very good (9+ out of 10) condition. The serial number dates it at 2005-2006 but it looks very nearly like a new bass. It has a very clean, lined/dotted rosewood neck and is strung with TI flats. It has been modded since the picture below (which comes from a previous FS thread by cardinaljay, hope thats OK?) by the addition of a more authentic 60's style tort scratchplate (made by the Bass Doc) and an ebony thumb-rest in the 60s position. I paid £420 plus £20 post (if memory serves me correctly) and the mods have cost me another £40, excluding the strings. Comes with a beat-up old hard case. I am asking £450 ono and will give preference to a meet-up/collection in London as Mrs Clarky's patience for waiting in all day for Interparcel pick-ups for me is at an all-time low!
If a man takes a loaf of bread to feed his starving family, is that stealing? If a man is sat on a bench and there is a car parked nearby with a cd playing and the man taps his foot along to it, is that stealing?
Example 1 is a life-or-death situation and example 2 does not involve taking permanent ownership of the music. Neither, with respect, apply in this debate IMHO The examples you gave above of the two bands employing creative use of fanbase targeting and offering free downloads are great - but are both consensual. Its non-consensual downloading I was referring to when I used the emotive word 'theft'
-
I do find it interesting how people are happy to apply different principles to music downloading/file-sharing than virtually any other form of goods. I consider it theft, period, whether or not there are niceties about whether it is the receiving or giving of said music files that is strictly illegal in the eyes of the law. There is obviously one exception - if music was specifically made for downloading/sharing by artists that wish to pursue this approach to building a fanbase/whatever, then of course thats fine. But the vast majority of artists are having a portion of their livelihoods stripped from them without their consent, I would guess. Does any of us like earning less, all else equal? Old curmudgeon sits back and waits to be flamed by the more enlightened members of BassChat .....
Hi, my name is Brad and I'm from England. I have a Stagg XB300-GBK and I very recently got myself a BOSS ME 20b (still trying to figure out how to use all its functions and buttons and everything). I have no idea how long I've been playing bass - not because I've been playing for ages and I'm some sort of God, but because I have a rubbish memory. I'm mostly into punk music, I hope I will get along well with the forum and enjoy my time here.
Welcome Brad, blimey you look a lot like Dee Dee from your sig pic

Mrs C gave me the second-hand Bacchus 62 Jazz in my sig ... well I bought it but she said it was from her and thats good enough for me

Without doubt the highest quality instruments I have owned - but had to sell my last one - a Spoiler, one of the more basic models - due to weight (and mine was not one of the heaviest Alembic, at 11 pounds!) The craftsmanship, woodwork, electronics etc were something else. At some point in the future (not immediate) I will own another one if I can find a Spoiler nearer to 9 pounds. I expect lozbass will be along before too long to chip in here as I guess - along with jazzyvee - he owns the most Alembics on BC ...

The opening 'jazzy' bass line to Boogie Nights by Heatwave. Nice little warm up exercise methinks. Here's the tab http://www.911tabs.com/link/?4728545 Great outfits! And nice Orange rigs (bass nerd time)

Best Stand for a Nitro-finish bass
Clarky replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Accessories and Misc
I did a thread on this a while back Nick http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=stand+nitro I have ended up with T-shirts on a Warwick Rockstand. The only ones that are 'guaranteed' to have non-reactive foam (as far as I can recall) are Hercules stands but I don't like the hanging ones (unstable in my view) and the portable gig one has nothing to prevent the bass tipping forwards -

Yeah, I think G & (no) L basses are grotto by comparison

I heard he dropped his Fender and moved to a G & (no) L for his Sleigh-er tribute band
