1.
The neck's been off the bass for several weeks Clarky, you'll need to let it settle down under tension for a while before you can get it right. I had no problems with that neck at all, and with a very low action C
Thanks Chris, I tried it with Chromes first and it was fine but the tension was too high for me, especially in the lower positions, hence switch to TIs. It's only on these lower tension strings I have found a problem.
  2. I do all my own set- ups on electric basses and find it pretty straightforward (credit card gap below strings, blah blah). However, have just swapped the strings on my '71 P/j fretless for TI flats and I cannot get it right. I have tried to follow the same principles as an electric but I am either getting buzzing on the E and A or the D and G when I alter truss rod and play around with bridge saddle height (I like low action). Am I doing it wrong or does the board need re- shooting? Thanks all
  3. Ignoring DBs (I would really like a Kolstein travel bass), mine are; Pre-CBS early 60s Fender P (I am luckyenough to have a 1963 incoming) 1962 stack knob Jazz Fretless Wall Mach 1 (check out the one in BassDirect, GAS!) Rick 4001 (early 70s with toaster, checkerboard binding) Edit: also a 1951 Fender P, the birth of bass as someone has already mentioned
  4.
41 I knew there was a reason I strayed into this part of the forum for once
At least you admitted it! 47 now

    Soliloquy

Just sold Kevin a MarkBass cab. Paid upfront and very promptly and waited very patiently for me as I got stuck in traffic on the way to Marylebone station this evening. Hope you enjoy the cab!
  6. Excellent gig Mark (aka discreet). The bass held everything together and boy do you play a lot of notes in your set - no wonder you were knackered afterwards! Very enjoyable and hope that you all felt good about the gig as the audience clearly enjoyed it.
  7.
Thanks for the picture. Thats gone into my ..... special folder
Ha ha, 40 downloads now
  8.
Last call! Soundcheck 16:00. Doors 19:00. On stage 21:00. I have my bass, some sandwiches and a spare pair of underpants.
Will you be in a pub beforehand? Mrs C and I are going for a Vietnamese meal near the Lock first but would be happy to buy you a good-luck pint/coca cola/whatever
  9.
You could fit some hinges to the front so the kids can get their own toys out.
Nice! Tasteful toy for the DB player who has everything!
  10. Well the coat hanger didn't work - the sticky tape blob fell off inside the bass In a fit of pique I manhandled the bass upside down and shook it - and managed to retrieve the two Pokemon cards. The Spiderman web is still inside (plus sticky tape blob ) but the bass has stopped rattling so thank you all for your suggestions. PS, I love the fact the picture of the lovely Laeticia Casta has been downloaded over 20 times with no comment from BC'ers
  11. Love it SS! Don't normally like a maple fretless board but that goes so well with the black body - and I really like the Marathon design
  12. I have decided to suspend this search for now as I have been advised by a few DB-playing BC'ers that a mic would not work well in my band as it would pick up too much of the other musicians (there's 14 of us, including three vocals, guitar(s), drums, souzaphone and full brass). Instead I am buying an upgraded pickup (an ATPflex Electret http://www.kontrabass-atelier.de/pickups_e.html)
  13. Looks fab, Wes! Out of interest why did you take the Fender decal off? It was a real Fender neck after all! I imagine you will have a few cheeky PMs making offers on this. Great work
  14. Oi! Laeticia, get out of bed. I have to empty my double bass
  15.
Can you swap the longer D/G screw over to the E/A and vice versa?
That was my thought. Alternatively I bet Bass Doc has spares .... I'd drop him a PM
  16.
How about one of these?
ooh, thats awfully clever! I will try the cheap (wire hanger and sticky stuff) route first and - if that fails - the Maplins picker-upper-thingummy
  17. Perhaps anyone has a pet chameleon they can lend me for a couple of hours?
  18. Thx Bilbo, option 1 sounds the most fruitful I tried the model but she wouldn't get out of bed for less than £5000. Not my bed, before you ask Did someone say "where's ferret?"
  19. My DB has a few Pokemon cards and a Spiderman web inside it, courtesy of my kids when they were very much younger. Generallt these are not a problem but they do rattle when I play the E string and it gets on my wick. Anyone have any bright ideas - short of breaking up the bass (!) how to get these annoying 'childhood treasures' out?
One day I'll get a proper image of this
Lovely colour Loz! Better pics please
  21. Nice preview of the gig in today's Metro (the London freebie newspaper), just under a quarter of a page (its a tabloid-sized paper). I checked the website but doesn't seem to be on that as well http://www.metro.co.uk/home/
  22.
what a truly beautiful instrument
Just gorgeous patina of age there Chris - would love this but sadly I only have a 15 year old, laminate-sided Andreas Zeller worth no more than 1k to trade ... and its got some pesky Pokemon cards and a Spiderman web posted inside it by my kids when they were tiny! Bump for a nice guy with whom I've done a few trades already
  23. What a star! I am about to take possession of an old Fender P and its missing a tip from the scratchplate - Howard sent me, gratis, a matching tip from an old (1963) celluloid Precision scratchplate that should match superbly well. Thanks Howard!
  24.
So is this the brand new issue that is newer than the one featured on the website?
It has Geddy Lee on the front of the magazine if that answers your question?
  25.
Tell you what, if you need £650 fast, I'll give you that for your Kolstein - problem sorted
I'll take your silence as a 'no' In which case, have a bump on me for an unusual and attractive bass!
