and you said the argument was finished off in the other thread.....
Yep, I'm f.o.s As soon as people, rather than simply voting, started giving their reasons for voting it inevitably started going down the tried-and-tested BassChat route of Harry Hill-style "FIGHT"
From my perspective, this is the crux of the matter: There are ONLY two types of bass player. Those who can slap, and those who can't. It doesn't matter if you can slap but choose not to. It doesn't matter if you have decades of experience with the greatest names in music, or if you're 12 years old and have just picked up a bass for the very first time. It doesn't matter if you play with fingers or a pick, play jazz or rock, old classics, modern, pop, prog, rap, whatever, IT ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT MATTER. You can either slap, or you can't. This automatically creates a division, "us and them", those who can and those who can't. And with any division comes elitism. And with elitism comes envy, jealousy, derision, intimidation, superiority, inferiority, frustration, fear, anger, etc. Those who can slap look down on and demean and patronise and condescend those who can't. Like, "Is that it? Is that all you can do? Come back when you've grown up and learned to slap like a real bass player." Those who cannot slap are afraid of and intimidated by those who can. "I have absolutely got to learn this technique. I have no use for it, and no interest in it, but no one's gonna take me seriously as a bass player unless I'm good at slapping." I believe this is why slap bass generates so much strong feeling.
I disagree. I can slap adequately (I'm no Marcus Miller, but who is .... err apart from Marcus Miller, and I'm certainly no Cluetterbuck ) but I choose not to as I don't much like the sound and it doesn't suit the bands I have played in. I can appreciate it when it suits the context of certain songs (Ashes to Ashes, Forget me nots, RATM stuff etc), hence my view being in line with the majority in the poll.

I would like to think the arguments on the other thread have pretty much exhausted this topic. Was interested to see if the ultra pro- and anti-slap community would be in the minority and thus far they are - most seem to think its cool if used to suit the context of a song (my view)

No comment on the combo's abilities just letting you know that the guys on the Orange stand said at the Bass Show they weren't going to go with the smaller 300W version (a 2x10), just the 500W (2x12). Sounded like a combination of financial and likely demand reasons. They didn't have one on display either which I thought odd given its supposed imminence.

12 pages of arguing! Well, off you go peeps ...

Sorry Ad, can't be there after all - as will be joining a Rattlin Bone mini-tour of Portugal http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=127448

Rattlin Bone have a 5 date tour of Portugal this week which I couldn't initially go on for work reasons (a slimmed down version of the band was going to play to backing tapes without me). However, I thought 'stuff it, life's too short' and have booked my flights so I can be there for the Friday and Saturday gigs in Porto and Figueira. My first ever non-UK dates. Will bring along my Eminence EUB (has a removable neck and fits into a hard golf bag case). Very excited!!!!

Can't be there for proximity reasons but best of luck! I saw Pigbag live in Oxford (I'm 99% certain) in the very early 80s around the time of 'Papa's Got a brand new Pigbag' and it was a great gig
Does this mean my Level 1-4 cock up measurement scale is now an industry standard. Excellent.
I presume you didn't notice the Level 1 cock-up at our gig on Friday where the drummer played the right time but completely the wrong drum pattern (he had two songs confused)? Threw me a bit but I just got on with it and strangely it worked, not that I want him to do that again Yep, the new industry standard, Adam

THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SITE FOR BASS ENTHUSIASTS, EXPENSIVE BASSES, CHEAP BASSES, WHATEVER , ALL I CAN SEE IS GUYS LOOKING AT PICS AND MAKING COMMENTS ONE WAY OR ANOTHER ABOUT SLAPPING, ITS A WASTE OF TIM AND HIS ROTOSOUND STAND AS FAR AS I CAN SEE. IS THERE REALLY ANY POINT IN LEARNING TO READ?????? CHEERS CLARKY
This is exactly what i use and would say it makes a superb mini rig with a very small footprint, making it ideal for tight spaces i.e. most of the pubs i end up playing! To anyone out there with a 121P - I would certainly recommend the NY121 cab as it gives you a 500w rig with enough headroom to deal with pretty well any gig where you're just using back-line amplification. Martin
Thanks Martin! Have only had interest so far in the combo but i guess, in today's cash constrained environment, thats not surprising. The cab is a superb match, as you say, and the only one in the MB range that stacks perfectly below the CMD121P combo

Combo now on hold for a few days (potential buyer expects funds in from sale by end of week) The cab is in completely pristine condition and has less than 5 housrs playing time, all at home. Its sat, unconnected, underneath the combo. You would not be able to tell it from a brand new cab and you get to save £85 (17.5%) off the new price.
Hope it went well. I'd be up for shared London gigs too. Rattlin Bone + Dick Venom & the Terrortones + the Jetsonics would be a top night out I reckon. If you're all up for it and if I have a date to work to I'll try and arrange something. In my experience most promoters are just venue bookers and I can do that. I have a few venues and contacts in mind that would be good.
Sounds great Ad, would be a fab line-up - my only word of caution is that, although I'm happy to play for beer money, Rattlin Bone's band leader is very keen on guaranteed paying gigs as we have a lot of travel expenses to cover (given that band are from all over the UK) The 12 Bar was a bit of an anomaly as we only took £60-odd home between the 12 of us (fortunately the Scottish guitarist didn't come)! We did it more for exposure and as a warm-up ahead of the much bigger gig next month (500+ people) in Brixton But yeah sounds like a brilliant idea, let us know when you have a venue/date in mind. Much appreciated mate, Clarky
If anyone kind London based soul was heading up North (maybe the Harrogate bass bash) and wouldn't mind picking the combo up, I'd take it like a shot.
Hi Mike, 'fraid I won't be travelling up your way Anyone else???? PS, I assume by mention of combo, you wouldn't be wanting the extension cab?
Ok, thanks Clarky
Put it this way, I swapped out some Pyramid Gold flats for these and haven't had to touch the truss rod at all. So very unscientifically it suggests they are similar tension to Pyramids which ar enot as low tension as TIs. Best I can do!
-
Do they feel as low tension as TIs?
Not to me, more medium/low than low tension
The D'addario black nylon tapewounds are great strings but just a word of caution; I had them on my jazz bass for a while, and because they're a pretty hefty gauge they wore the grooves in the nut bigger. When I went back to regular strings my A string was rattling about like buggery in the groove and I had to get a new nut (although I did just play with some card packed underneath it for a couple of years!).
I don't think you mean D'Addario's. They are only just launched. And they are 'normal' gauges (50-105). I suspect you mean Roto Tru Bass which are great thick black caterpillars of strings
-
sorry, I haven't read 10 pages of this
I will summarise: I started the OP to moan about machine gun, uber-loud show-off slapping and how it ruined bass shows Then some people said they hate slapping altogether, others said the anti-slappers are plain ignorant and missing out on bass' rich tapestry, and most said slapping is fine when done to suit the song (which is my position). Saves you wasting 20 minutes of your life!
Ok Clarky don't bother answering my question in the other thread. I've got La Bella black nylons on my TF - have you tried those? If so how do they compare?
Sorry not tried the La Bella's. My only reference are Tru Bass strings which I found unwieldy. These are 'normal' gauges, rather than thick sticks of licorice, so they feel very 'familiar' under the fingers, have reasonable low/medium tension, and sound nice. Impressed so far.
Have you tried them yet?
I wrote some comments on your thread Dave - you mean you didn't read my pearls of wisdom?
