Thats the first time I've heard a RA Mouse and I have to say it sounds wonderful. Not sure I could cope with a 30" scale length though

Very rarely see these come up for sale. Bidding already quite high (nearly £800) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROB-ALLEN-MOUSE-30-B...#ht_2030wt_1141
Clarky, if it helps, here's the thread I started with before and after sound clips of my Jazz with and without your J-Retro. Also, this unit is virtually mint, it has no solder joints, nothing. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=123987&hl
Very kind, thanks mate!

If you're not especially loud and have no drummer, a piezo pickup should do the trick and will sound more DB-like than a mag pickup. There are dead cheap ones on eBay (owen has one of those FS on the forum) or better quality ones include Shadow, Underwood etc. My TM (short for Taco Man, I believe!) is a US home produced pickup which sounds great (oldslapper has one) and slobluesine knows how to source these. Cost me £60
look up one of my posts earlier on the thread about playing loudly - all the KA contact details are there as well as the newer sound composite pickup
This is the thread Bob is referring to http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=131128&hl= FWIW I am using a TM piezo pickup (not tried it live though as only got it from slobluesine this week) and am probably going to end up using a mag pickup live as my band is loud (14 of us, and I'm competing against drums, sousaphone, guitar and brass section)

Recording session - couple of personal milestones
well done dude - did u go straight into the desk or get to use any of yr rig?
Went straight into the desk via one of these D-TAR preamps http://www.d-tar.com/solstice.shtml (it was all set up by our band leader, who is a proficient DB and electric bass player in his own right) - the rest was done with EQ and compression from the computer software (although the 71 P/J fretless was left reasonably unaffected) For the gear geeks (like me) I had Rotosound TruBass strings on the 71 P/J and it sounded better than the DB for the smoky jazz-esque song, so we ditched my attempts at DB for that particular song and switched to the fretless. The 63P (with La Bella standard-gauge Flats on) unsurprisingly sounded perfect for the Northern Soul song -
Bugger !!! just brought secondhand shadow nanoflex i used one of these pups on my last bass after trying about 5 different quality pickups and this was by far the best quality sound out there a tad quiet but a great sound with a pre if this dont go quick i will be selling the nanoflex asap
well, its not gone quick yet! Bump! -
I never tried to say that! I placed a simple question with no pun intended... I just thought that they could have lowered their prices and the "£205 Black" was referring to black hardware (plate and knobs). Cheers
Sorry, I read too much into a humble exclamation mark. I have seen a number of FS threads de-railed recently by people publicly criticising prices (even though the T&C's say to do so only via PM) and was being a bit too sensitive ANyways, bump for an immaculate condition J-Reto at close to 25% off new price

Recording session - couple of personal milestones
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Not for a while I think. The two solo singles are planned to come out later this year, the first in the next couple of months. The Rattlin Bone songs (at least the original one with DB) I presume will be on our next album which will be a while as we only launched the first one a month or two ago -
Did a recording session at our band leader's home studio today and achieved a few personal milestones - my first recording with a double bass, my first recording with a fretless bass and my first recording playing fingerstyle (I was always a pick player until I joined Rattlin Bone). Laid down four tracks - backing bass-lines for our lady singer's two planned solo singles (one a Northern Soul, stomp-along using my 63P; one a smoky, slightly jazzy Carol King-esque song using my 71 P/J fretless) plus DB for an unfinished Rattlin Bone song and fretless for a cover that we plan to do in the band. Took a while (and a fair few takes) to get in the swing but am feeling chuffed with myself as I do not think I would have the nerve let alone ability to lay down those lines 12 months ago.

Dennis Gahjgqdkwr99b&$2[q9a is one of the Master build team in the Custom Shop. You quite often see his name appended to one-off CS basses. Think there have been one or two of his builds for sale on BC Edit: here's one http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...Dennis+Galuszka -
Is this the deluxe? Your link shows Bass Direct selling them at £195 plus £5 post to UK! I would love one for my '77 modded VM but it's a bit pricey for me ATM... Good luck with the sale!
The black knobs cost more than the chrome (and gold knobs even more) see below copied from the BassDirect link: "J Retro Chrome £195 + £5 UK shipping J RETRO - £195 Chrome, £205 Black, £215 Gold" You will find the exact same prices on John East's website http://www.east-uk.com/ Not trying to pull a fast one - after all, the price I am asking is the price I thought was fair to pay two weeks ago!

I got this a couple of weeks back from Nigel/silddx, who had it installed from new on his lovely CAR Jazz bass he is selling. Being the mind-changing berk that I am, I have decided to keep my Jazz all passive after all and so I do not need this. I hadn't got around to installing it and so its still all boxed up. Would like to pass on for what I paid, which is £165 posted. BassDirect (see below) does these for £205 plus £5 post, so its a £45 saving on new. BTW, its in vgc http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...ps_J_Retro.html
How'd you get on with this Clarky? I've just recorded with it and the engineer loved it. He was resistant at first, preferring 2 mics, but he ended up mixing both. John
Tried it this morning against my newly arrived ATPFlex - the latter is now FS on the forum which tells you! Great volume and authentic DB sound. I did find the sound varied quite a lot depending on how exactly you place the piezo part within the wing - if its hanging loose (ie, vertical) its a bit too boomy but if you put it in horizontally and wedge the rubber casing 'tail' against the end of the wing it obviously reduces some of the vibration and cuts out the boominess for a really nice sound

I would like an option to ignore OT purely because I end up spending too much time on there and occasionally get irrationally wound up by topics (I know its me being stupid to have my hackles rise but it happens). That said, as silddx rightly said he wouldn't have had the show of support and nor would I (for Mrs C's injury) ... but those type of threads are very personal in nature rather than the inflammatory stuff which causes these occasional outcries, so maybe befitting of a new Forum ("Members' personal" or whatever)?

For sale: APT-FlexElectret double bass pickup
Clarky posted a topic in EUBs & Double Basses For Sale
I got this from Lando Music in Frankfurt yesterday, tried today and decided its not for me. Its a bit like a Realist but with a thin nanoflex film. Sounds great if you whack up the volume on your amp but just doesn't go loud enough for my needs (I play in a 14 piece band with drums, sousaphone, brass section, electric guitar etc). Regarding the volume issue, it has also occurred to me that it could be that my DB (as a relatively cheap part-ply Zeller) just isn't that resonant to suit this pickup, given that the reviews of the pickup on the web tend to be glowing. By the way, BC'er Gareth Hughes uses one of these and likes it a lot. I paid about £160 inc postage (retails at Euro 160 before tax and post to UK). How about £120 posted? Blurb from Lando music: This new pickup for double bass comes from Russia, and is placed under the foot of the bridge. No piezo is used, but an new electret film. This film allows thickness of only 0.5 mm. In addition, the sheet is flexible and totally even, and fits the curvature of top and bridge feet perfectly. Due to the placement on the bass’ top, the sound of the APT-FlexElectret is round and powerful for both pizzicato and arco. For best results, a preamp/amp with high impedance input (2 MOhm or above) is recommended. The electret film sensor is shielded with copper foil, and has a rigid cable joint. The Switchcraft-jack is attached to the tailpiece by means of a plastic clip for the E-string. Size: active area 27 x 48 mm, thickness 0.5 mm easy installation under the bridge foot well suited for both pizzicato and arco very thin incl. LANDO pickup clamp (Read user comments at www.talkbass.com.) Price: 160,– Euro* NEW – also available: APT-FlexElectret cello pickup and APT-FlexElectret violin pickup Links: http://www.doublebassguide.com/?p=23 http://www.kontrabass-atelier.de/pickups_e.html -
Yeah it was basically the fact that my chordal knowledge wasnt up to scratch.. i agree.. ive always been quite a loose free player... thats why (if i dont give up) i maybe need to start disiplining my self..
B5, I can guarantee that you are a leagues better bass player than me. I can't read, I sit on root notes etc. Your technical ability (whatever it is) is perfectly adequate for many bands, so wave goodbye to this lot and there will be someone else out there in which you will fit in perfectly. Chemistry between band members is more important than ability IMHO

It is indeed supposed to remove deads spots (the wooden equivalent of that clamp thing that Leland Sklar uses)
you'll find all sorts of discussions of the tonal impacts/nuances of body size on TB's Alleva Club (I've more or less given up - it's all got a bit esoteric)
Sounds fascinating Loz! Sadly I will be washing my hair instead or watching paint dry ... FWIW, I agree with the OP - in general I think ACs are very beautiful things but that particular bass looks disproportionate and bloated to me
